Chapter 3 - Chapter 3: The Schemes of Sarah

Aliana's POV

"Lucas, I need you to find out everything you can about Sarah," I said, my voice low as I sat across from Lucas Sinclair in my office. The soft hum of the city outside the window contrasted with the storm of thoughts in my head.

Lucas leaned forward, his eyes steady. "I understand, Aliana. You want the truth, no matter how deep it goes." His tone was reassuring, yet I could sense his determination to get to the bottom of Sarah's secrets.

I exhaled slowly. "She's been playing everyone against each other. Michael's still confused by her lies, and now, she's manipulating him into believing that I'm trying to ruin his future. I can't let that happen—not when our family is at stake." My hands trembled slightly as I clutched a photograph of happier times, a reminder of what I was fighting for.

Just then, the sound of my phone ringing interrupted our conversation. I glanced at the caller ID and saw Michael's name. With a deep breath, I answered.

"Aliana, we need to talk," Michael said, his voice tinged with both urgency and despair.

"Michael, I'm in the middle of something important. Can this wait?" I replied, trying to hide the frustration in my tone.

"Not really," he insisted. "Sarah has been saying some things—things that make me doubt everything. I just… I don't know who to trust anymore."

Before I could respond, a soft knock on the door signaled another presence. I turned and saw Zayden Lockhart entering the room. His eyes were as dark and calculating as ever, and the way he moved suggested he had a purpose.

"Aliana, sorry to barge in," Zayden said, his voice smooth, "but I couldn't help but overhear your conversation. Perhaps I can be of assistance with your business? I know things—details, connections—that could really help you turn things around."

I frowned, my heart racing with a mix of suspicion and irritation. "Zayden, I appreciate your offer, but I'm not interested in your help. My focus is on uncovering the truth about Sarah, not playing into your games."

He smirked lightly. "I only want what's best for you, Aliana. Sometimes the truth can be a dangerous thing, though." His eyes flickered with an unreadable emotion, and I wasn't sure if I should be grateful or wary.

Back on the phone, Michael continued. "Aliana, please, just hear me out. Sarah says you're planning something to ruin our future. I want to believe you, but her words are starting to sound true."

I held the phone tighter, feeling a surge of anger and sadness. "Michael, I would never do anything to hurt our family. I'm trying to fix what's been broken by Sarah's lies." I paused, choosing my words carefully. "I've hired Lucas to find out everything about her past. I need you to trust me and keep an open mind."

Michael sighed. "I want to trust you, Aliana, I truly do. But Sarah is so convincing. I'm lost in all of this, and I can't help feeling that I'm trapped between her sweet lies and the pain of our history."

I looked between Lucas and Zayden, feeling the weight of the situation. "Listen, both of you, I need you on my side. Lucas, dig deep into Sarah's past. Zayden, if you know anything—anything at all—that could help me understand her game, now is the time to speak up."

Zayden hesitated, then spoke in a measured tone. "I've heard whispers about Sarah's past. There are rumors, dark rumors, that she's not who she pretends to be. But nothing concrete, nothing I can share openly." His eyes met mine, and I saw a flicker of concern behind his usual mask of indifference.

Lucas interjected, "I've already started looking into her background. There are inconsistencies in her story that don't add up. I'm following up on every lead, Aliana. I promise you, I won't stop until I uncover the truth."

Michael's voice came back through the phone, softer now. "Aliana, I just want us to be together again without all this deception. I'm willing to fight for us—if you're willing to fight too."

A knot formed in my stomach as I replied, "I am fighting, Michael. But fighting the truth isn't as simple as fighting an enemy in the open. It's hidden in lies and secrets." I paused, trying to steady my voice. "I need you to trust that I'm doing everything I can for our family."

The conversation ended with heavy silence on the other end of the line. I set the phone down and turned my attention back to Lucas and Zayden.

"Both of you, this isn't just about business or pride—it's about protecting our future," I said, my eyes narrowing with determination. "Sarah's playing a dangerous game, and I can't let her win."

Lucas nodded. "I'll keep you updated every step of the way. If there's something big, you'll be the first to know."

As the day wore on, I tried to focus on my work, but my mind kept drifting to the tangled web Sarah was weaving. Every time Michael's voice echoed in my thoughts, I wondered if he could ever see through the facade that Sarah had so carefully constructed.

Later that evening, after a long day of meetings and design reviews, I retreated to my private studio—a place where I could finally be alone with my thoughts. The soft glow of the city lights through the window was comforting, but the darkness inside me refused to fade. I sank into my desk chair and stared at the sketches of my latest designs, each line and curve a silent promise of my resilience.

Just then, my phone buzzed with a new message. It was from Lucas. My heart skipped a beat as I opened it, eager yet terrified to learn what he had discovered. The message read: "I've found something, Aliana. Meet me at the old warehouse on 5th Street. It's urgent."

My pulse quickened. I hesitated for a moment, weighing the risks. If Lucas had uncovered evidence that could finally expose Sarah, it might also change everything—potentially destroying the carefully constructed lies that had kept our lives in balance. I grabbed my coat and headed out, my mind racing with questions and fears.

On my way to the warehouse, every shadow seemed to whisper secrets, every passerby a potential threat. The cool night air did little to calm the storm inside me. When I finally arrived, the building loomed in front of me like a relic of a forgotten era, its broken windows and rusted metal a stark contrast to the polished world I once knew.

Inside, the warehouse was dimly lit, and the air smelled of dust and decay. I saw Lucas standing by a stack of old crates, his face illuminated by the soft light of his flashlight. As I approached, his eyes met mine, and I could see the gravity of what he had discovered in his troubled gaze.

"Aliana," he said, his voice low and urgent. "I found something that could destroy everything Sarah has built."

Before I could ask for details, a sudden noise from behind one of the crates made us both jump. My heart pounded as I reached for Lucas's arm, seeking reassurance. He nodded, signaling that we needed to stay quiet.

In that moment, I realized that our fight was far from over. The truth was hidden in the shadows, and every step we took could lead to more danger. With Lucas by my side and Michael's trust hanging in the balance, I knew that the coming days would test us all in ways we never imagined.

And then, as Lucas slowly pulled out a small, crumpled file from beneath a crate, his eyes widened in shock. "Aliana, look at this," he whispered, holding up a document that could shatter Sarah's carefully constructed lies forever.

My heart pounded louder than ever as I leaned in, the weight of the moment pressing down on me. What secrets did this file hold? And how would they change everything we thought we knew?
