Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: the dead is alive

Vasilev was pacing back and forth on a hospital hallway, his head buried in his hands. His anxiety went up a notch when the ward door opened and a doctor emerged. He was the same height as Vasilev, that is six feet three and had dark greyish hair. He wore round-rimmed glasses and sported a clean shaven beard that matched his hair colour.Vasilev(if not for the worried look that he wore) would pass for a war general, his auburn hair was wild, his eyes blue and he had tonned muscles from working full-time in a mine.

"Dr.Huron is everything okay?"Vasilev asked though from the look that the had,it was obviously bad.The doctor confirmed this by shaking his head slowly a solemn look planted on his face.

"Your child... he's...not alive,"Huron said.

"You mean it's a boy?"Vasilev said before registering what the doctor had told him.

Earlier that day Vasilev was working in the mine when news came in that his wife was in labour. That shouldn't have been possible since his wife was only six months pregnant.Still he hurried home. His colleagues knowing very well that she needed medical attention, gave him the fastest vehicle they had.It was a carriage pulled by hell hounds.Hell hounds were magical creatures that adapted to all environments with astonishing speed. It was so fast in fact that a hell hound would change completely beyond recognition by the second day after arriving at a new place. They were also physically adapted to whatever environments they would be inhabiting, be it aquatic, desert, mountain, forest or whatever... The hell hounds that Vasilev and his friends were using were obsidian black to blend in with the caves of the mines, scarlet eyes, heightened ears and were extremely strong and resistant. So with the help of the hell hounds the journey to the hospital that would have taken eight hours took three.

On reaching the hospital the staff went crazy and took his wife to the emergency unit and told him to wait outside. He'd been waiting ever since until Huron told him the devastating news.

"No...no... this is not..."Vasilev said his voice cracking.

"Calm down,"Huron said trying to reach Vasilev who took a step back, his face buried in his hands tears escaping through this fingers.

"Nooo...."Vasilev started before a magical green aura erupted from every pore on his skin. The shock wave created shattered the glass panes on the windows, rent the walls into cracks. The nearby chairs fell and broke into their constituent parts. The hallway lights flickered then came back to life.Huron stood rooted on the ground not daring to move.He knew of Vasilev's Separation Magic that allowed him to separate objects to their constituent building blocks. That's how Vasilev excelled in mining. He could separate magical crystals ores from the rocks no problem. However, uncontrolled that power was destructive and definitely not appropriate for a hospital environment.

"Doctor you need to see this,"a female voice said breaking the tension.Huron turned to see a nurse standing in the entrance he came from.He was just about to enter when Vasilev walked hurriedly past him and the nurse scampered out of his way.Even she knew better than to stop a wall of human tissue harbouring mana that could separate stuff. She didn't know if it would work on people. She didn't want to find out.

When Huron walked in he found Vasilev standing just three feet of the door glued on the spot. His eyes were teary.

"Maybe it's because his son is dead,"Huron thought.Until he realized that he's not.The new born boy was in his mother's hands and she held him close to her ample bossom and he was definitely not dead evident by how he kicked his legs,a response to the new environment. It as if he was saying 'hey it's too cold out here'.

"How is this possible?he should be dead ,"Huron said then noticed Vasilev next to him and added quickly," no offense,I simply choose to believe that my magic is accurate."

"Dr.Huron this is not normal,"said the nurse.

"What do you mean?"Huron asked.

"Well... first he came with that,"she said pointing to the boy's neck.On it wound up a golden chain that held a golden pocket watch.

"Where did that come from?"both Huron and Vasilev asked.

Funny, the response also came in unison from the mother and the nurse,"He came out with it."All this time the mother did not take her eyes off the boy.

"That's not all,"the nurse said Huron could detect fear in her voice,"hi..s...his... heart isn't working."
