Chapter 4 - Chapter 4 A Change in Air, Step towards Friendship

Everything was going perfectly.

I was content, finding joy in the smallest moments—just quietly admiring him from a distance, watching as he laughed with his friends, completely unaware of the way my heart raced.

It was enough.

But then, Raj and Priya caught me staring. And in that moment, my quiet little world of admiration was no longer just mine.

They both told me,"To do things that would impress him."

"NO..!" I scream loudly, too loudly!

Everyone was shock to see me like this.

"How long will you admire him from far ?" Priya asked.

"You have to tell him that you love him." Raj said.

"What if I'm not his type ? What if he loves someone else ? What if I'm not a girl he dream for ? What should I do? I think its better to admire him from afar, that's all I can do." I said.

Priya and I were arguing when Raj stopped us and said, "Don't argue . We'll find a solution, Okay ? , now take it easy." Raj said.

"But..." "Chill Priya." Raj interrupted.

"Okay , But we need some solution. I can't take this anymore Raj." Priya said.

"Yes , YES, Priya, We'll figured it out ," Raj assured her and gone to his classroom.

I and Priya following him to his classroomto eat our lunch, but I stood there at the classroom door, feeling a knot in my stomach.

"Do you think he will notice me ?" I ask.

Priya, (trying to keep my voice steady , but it came out more like a nervous whisper.)

Priya just gave me a sly smile of hers, the one that always makes me feel like she knows something about me but I don't.

"He always does." She said like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

I blushed little , even though my heart was racing, "I just don't want to mess it up, What if he doesn't see me the way I see him?" I asked her.

I have gone to Vihaan's classroom many times but today Vihaan was in his class during lunch break. Usually he is not.

Just then , Raj walked in and asked "What are you two whispering about?" Raising an eyebrow at us.

"Nothing." I said quickly, too quickly.

Raj didn't look convinced, "Well, whatever it is, don't worry too much. Things have a way of working themselves out." He said.

His words were meant to be comforting, but I could think was, "He will really noticing ?"

Priya enters the class without uttering a single word to me.

 I stepped into classroom,

The usual noise of everyone talking and laughing . It felt all distant, but the moment my eyes met his, I lost myself.

Everything and Everyone else fade.

That was the kind of moment you see in movies and dramas. At the instant , I felt as though I was living something truly real.

In this moment, Raj and Priya came up behind me. Priya tilted her head, observing me with a small smile.

"He looks handsome," she mused.

Caught up in the moment, I sighed, a dreamy smile tugging at my lips. "Yes… even more handsome than that day when we made our first eye contact."

The words had barely left my mouth when I realized what I had just said. My heart stopped.

Vihaan hear this.

Priya and Raj both laughed heartily and I was brought back to reality.

In truth, that moment was quite embrassing for me, but I have a habit of embrassing myself everytime infront of Vihaan.

As a laughter died down, the teacher called for attention and said, "Next period is your games period as you know." Signaling us to head to the ground after our lunchbreak.

I'm always excited for this period because Vihaan's class and our class have games periods at the same time.

Our lunch break got over and lunch too.

Packed up our tiffin and gone to our class, while chatting about games period.

While going to class I met Vihaan's sister Aarya.

"Hi." I said.

She smile and said, "Hi Vahini" (Sister-in-law).

(She know I like her brother).

I blushed and said, "Areee yaar halu bol , lok bag kiti ahet." (Oh yaar , Keep your voice low see how many people are there).

.

.

.

.

.

She was in hurry so she left quickly.

 Priya was teasing me .

I told her she is my friend and she knows that I like her brother, so she supports me.

Okay ! Now don't tease me.

Games period started and we practice flute for 26th January.

And at that moment my mam called me for some work so I gone.

.

.

.

.

After some time when I came back, I saw Priya and Raj talking to Vihaan about something.

So, I went over , but they quickly changed the topic.

As I walked over to them, I could sense the sudden shift in their conversation.

Priya shot me a quick smile.

"Hey, What are you all talking about?" I asked casually.

"Oh, nothing much." Raj and Vihaan said to quickly.

It sounded suspicious so I asked again,"Really?"

"Yes , Just boring stuff about school." Priya said.Vihaan trying to divert the attention, quickly said, "Yeah , just talking about that history assignment."

"Okay." I said though I was not convinced.

I was happy to see Vihaan talking to me.

"Hi aanya." Vihaan said.

I was shocked and nervous cuz he never said anything like this before.

"Hi Vihaan." I said.

In this short conversation I had imagine Our Marriage, Our children ,Everything cuz I'm delulu yaar.

"From now we are best friends , Okay?" Vihaan said.

[I was shock, while Priya and Raj were watching us.]

"YES, YES , YES OFCOURSE why not?" I said with my exciting voice.

"Why are you so excited?" Vihaan said.

"Obviously Vihaan , She will be, her dream came true." Raj said.

Priya was laughing.

Vihaan was staring at me.

"NO, no , I was just happy cuz you talked to me." I said too quick to sound convincing.

Vihaan smiled and said "okay okay bye, I guess period will get over now, we will meet tomorrow."

I said "Okay bye."

He left.

Bell rang Period got over.

Raj and Priya were looking at me.

I was about to faint but Priya ran towards me and said "Aanya are you okay?"

"Obviously she will be , why are you asking this to her?" Raj said.

Priya held my shoulders, shaking me slightly. "Aanya, speak! Say something!"

I blinked rapidly, my mind still replaying Vihaan's words. Best friends… He said we're best friends!

"I-I'm fine," I managed to say, though my voice barely came out as a whisper.

Priya smirked. "Fine? Girl, you look like you're about to collapse. Breathe!"

Raj folded his arms, grinning. "So, Mrs. Vihaan, how does it feel to have your dreams turn into reality?"

I shot him a glare. "Shut up, Raj! It's not like that!"

Priya gasped dramatically.

"Oh really? Then why were you practically glowing when he spoke to you?"

"I was not glowing!" I protested.

Raj chuckled. "Yeah, sure. And I totally didn't see you mentally planning your wedding just now."

I groaned, covering my face. "You both are impossible."

Priya nudged me. "And you, my dear Aanya, are delulu—but in the best way."

I sighed, still feeling the rush of emotions. "He said we're best friends now… But what if I mess this up?"

Priya gave me a reassuring smile. "Then you'll deal with it. But for now, just enjoy the moment."

Raj smirked. "And try not to faint next time he says your name, alright?"

I rolled my eyes but couldn't stop the small smile forming on my lips. Best friends… At least it's a start.

The three of us started walking to the classroom, and my heart was still racing. Vihaan and I… best friends. It felt unreal. I was walking on clouds, yet my feet were on the ground.

Raj nudged me. "So, what's the plan now, Mrs. Vihaan?"

I groaned. "Raj! Stop calling me that!"

Priya giggled. "He has a point, though. Now that you're officially best friends, what's next?"

I hesitated. "I don't know… I just want things to stay like this for now."

Raj smirked. "You mean you want to admire him from closer now?"

I shoved him playfully. "Raj, I swear I'll killed you (just kidding)"

Priya giggled. "But seriously, Aanya, what now? You two are best friends. What's next?"

I sighed, still trying to process everything. "I don't know… I just want things to stay like this for now."

Raj raised an eyebrow. "For now? That means you do want more later?"

I rolled my eyes. "Raj, stop overanalyzing everything!"

Priya nudged me. "But honestly, Aanya, this is huge. Vihaan isn't the type to randomly call someone his best friend. He clearly likes talking to you."

I blinked. "You think so?"

Raj nodded. "Definitely. He could've just said 'friends,' but no, best friends. That's a big deal, Aanya."

A small smile crept onto my lips. "I mean… yeah, it is."

Priya clapped her hands. "Okay, okay! So, bestie Aanya, what's next? Hanging out with him tomorrow?"

I bit my lip. "I guess… if he wants to?"

Raj grinned. "Oh, he will."

The bell rang, signaling the end of the period. As we gathered our things, Priya leaned in and whispered, "Mark my words, Aanya. This is just the beginning."

And deep down, I knew she was right.

As we reached the corridor, we saw Vihaan standing with his friends. He glanced in our direction, and for a brief moment, our eyes met. He gave me a small smile, and before I could even think, I smiled back.

Raj nudged my shoulder. "Someone's already settling into her new role."

"Shut up!" I hissed, my face heating up.

Priya laughed. "You're blushing, Aanya. This is so cute."

I covered my face with my hands. "I hate you both."

Raj chuckled. "You love us. And you love him."

I sighed dramatically. "Can we please just go to our next class before I actually faint?"

Priya hooked her arm through mine. "Fine, but this conversation isn't over, bestie."

As we walked away, I stole one last glance at Vihaan. Maybe, just maybe, this really was just the beginning.

Priya took me to class.

.

.

.

School got over.

.

.

.

.

.

Ever since that day, something had changed.

.

.

.

.

Vihaan wasn't just a name I whispered in my heart anymore. He was now my best friend—at least, that's what he said.

I wasn't sure if my heart had agreed yet.

The next morning, I was standing outside my classroom with Priya, waiting for our teacher to arrive, when I heard a familiar voice calling me from across the hallway.

"Aanya, bestie!"

My heart did a full somersault before I forced myself to act normal. I turned and saw Vihaan grinning at me from his division's side of the hallway.

Priya immediately nudged me. "Wow, Aanya, he's calling you bestie now?"

I rolled my eyes, trying to suppress the blush creeping onto my cheeks. "Shut up, Priya."

Vihaan made his way towards us, his hands stuffed in his pockets. "What, no reply? Some best friend you are."

I crossed my arms, pretending to be unaffected. "Oh, sorry. Hi, bestie," I said, emphasizing the word.

He smirked, clearly enjoying this. "That's more like it."

Before I could say anything else, Raj appeared beside him, laughing. "Man, Vihaan, I think you enjoy teasing her a little too much."

Priya smirked. "And I think Aanya enjoys it too."

I glared at her. "Priya—"

"Anyway," Vihaan interrupted, ignoring our banter, "what are you doing after school? Let's walk to the gate together."

I blinked. What?

Raj looked at him knowingly. "Oh? You never wait for us after school. What's with this special treatment?"

Vihaan shrugged casually. "She's my best friend now, isn't she?"

I tried to find my voice. "I—uh—sure?"

Priya grinned. "Aanya, stop stuttering."

Vihaan just chuckled. "Great. See you after school, bestie." With that, he walked away with Raj, leaving me staring after him, my heart pounding against my ribs.

Priya crossed her arms. "Okay, miss 'I just admire him from afar', what was that?"

I exhaled sharply, running a hand through my hair. "I have no idea."

But deep down, I knew.

Vihaan was treating me differently. He was suddenly everywhere—waving at me in the hallways, finding reasons to talk to me, and teasing me like we had been friends forever.

And the scariest part?

I was getting used to it.

.

.

.

.

.

After school, I stood near the gate, pretending to check my notebook while my heart raced. Priya had already left, throwing me a smirk before disappearing into the crowd.

And then, I heard his voice.

"You didn't run away, huh?"

I looked up to see Vihaan standing beside me, his usual teasing grin in place.

I rolled my eyes. "Why would I run?"

He shrugged, adjusting his bag. "Just making sure my bestie isn't scared of me yet."

I scoffed. "Please, I can handle you."

He smirked. "We'll see."

We started walking, the school fading behind us. The silence wasn't awkward—it was new, different. Comfortable.

For the first time, Vihaan wasn't just a distant admiration. He was here, teasing me, walking beside me, calling me bestie like it actually meant something.

And that's when it hit me—things were changing.

And I wasn't sure if my heart was ready for it.

I was blushing, wondering with him

I was another version of myself in front of him. The version that smiled a little too much, laughed a little too easily, and turned pink at the smallest things he said.

And the way he looked at me sometimes?

Oh god. My heart wasn't just beating—it was doing backflips.

Him making me laugh felt like the best thing in the world, like my entire existence had been leading up to these little moments with him.

I guess he was my bestest best friend.

The way he teased me, the way he casually ruffled my hair, the way he said bestie with that smug little grin—I was living for these moments.

I knew I was new in this school since 5th grade, and for so long, I kept wondering why God had sent me here. Why this school? Why this place?

But today, I got my answer.

He was the reason. This—this right here—was the reason behind everything.

A boy who was once just another stranger in my life, just another name in the crowd, had become my bench partner last year in 7th. And now, in 8th, he was suddenly my best friend.

And when he leaned in closer today, looked straight into my eyes, and said, "Aanya, you're blushing again."

I knew.

This was trouble. The kind of trouble that made my heart flutter like crazy.

And that's when it hit me—things were changing.

And I wasn't sure if my heart was ready for it.

Vihaan wasn't just some boy I admired from a distance anymore. He was now part of my everyday life—teasing me, making me laugh, calling me bestie in that way that sent my heart into a frenzy.

I wasn't used to this. Not to the way he looked at me like he knew exactly what he was doing, nor the way his words made my face heat up.

But I was definitely not used to how much I liked it.

As we walked out of school together that evening, he nudged me playfully. "You're weird, Aanya."

I frowned. "Excuse me?"

He smirked. "One second, you're all quiet, the next, you're acting like you've known me forever."

I turned away, trying to hide my blush. "Well…maybe I have."

He laughed, shaking his head. "I guess I'll have to get used to my best friend being unpredictable."

Best friend.

That word again.

I forced a smile, but inside, my heart whispered—But I don't want to be just best friends.

As he walked off, waving at me over his shoulder, Priya appeared beside me, arms crossed.

"Are you going to admit it now?" she asked.

I sighed. "Admit what?"

Priya smirked. "That you're completely, hopelessly falling for him."

"I have told you already Priya I'm madly in love with him". I said.

"Okay so if he loves you, he with turn and smile." She said.

"Okay we will see." I was in full confident but my fingers were crossed.

.

.

Andddddd,

HE TURNED!!!!!

"I am so happy Priya!!" I said.

"He loves you." Priya said.

.

.

.

.

That's how my school break, Games period , After school moments were going on laughing, giggling, making fun of each other's and blushing.

.

.

.

.

.

That's how I was Enjoying my school life and school love.

I admired him from afar, and now he stands beside me. Funny how love works in whispers before it shouts.
