Chapter 24 - Chapter 24: The Girl with a Black Veil Over Her Eyes

I stared at the black cat on the car's hood in a daze, suspecting that I was having an auditory hallucination. How could a black cat talk? Isn't it a well - known rule that animals are not allowed to become spirits after the founding of the People's Republic of China?

The black cat looked at me as if I were an idiot and pointed to the side with its paw.

I turned my head and noticed a girl in a beige dress standing in the shadow of the eaves beside me.

She had a good figure and long hair that flowed like a waterfall. However, what was most attractive was the black gauze wrapped around her face, covering her eyes.

The beige dress, the long black hair like a waterfall, and the black gauze covering her eyes created a contrast between black and white, which gave the girl an inexplicable charm.

I had to admit that I was immediately stunned by this girl at first sight.

Although her eyes were covered, her willow - leaf - shaped eyebrows, upturned nose, and rosy and cute lips all indicated that she must be a great beauty.

When the girl saw me turn my head, she said again, "Chen Feng, don't go. You'll only make things worse..."

"Who are you? Why don't you let me go? I'm about to lose my life. You tell me not to save myself. Why should I listen to you?"

Sure, the girl is pretty, but my life comes first. I'm not the kind of guy who gets dazzled by a beauty.

"Chen Feng, I won't hurt you. Because you're my future husband. Listen to me. Go back quickly. Don't trust Huang Po and the woman beside you. They..."

Just then, Huang Po, who was sitting in the back row, opened the door and got out. "Chen Zi, why are you still standing there? Just take that piece of paper off."

I turned my head and glanced at Huang Po, feeling a bit strange. There was clearly a black cat lying on the hood meowing at me, and there was a great beauty talking to me here. Couldn't he see them?

I still wanted to ask the veiled girl what she meant.

But when I turned my eyes back, the shadow under the eaves was empty. There was no girl in a dress at all.

I turned my head and looked at the hood of the car. There was no black cat at all. There was only a yellow paper covering the windshield, blocking the view while driving.

Where did this yellow paper come from? It was clearly a black cat just now.

I stood there, completely stunned, feeling like I was losing my mind. Was it an illusion just now? Or did I really see a ghost in broad daylight?

Urged by Huang Po, I mechanically grabbed the yellow paper on the windshield, crumpled it into a ball, and threw it by the roadside.

Back in the car, sitting in the driver's seat, I couldn't help asking, "Didn't you guys see that black cat just now?"

I subconsciously hid the matter of the veiled girl and didn't dare to tell Jiang Lixin for fear that she would be jealous.

"What black cat? Didn't a yellow paper blow over? You got out to grab the yellow paper," Jiang Lixin asked, looking very puzzled.

However, Huang Po in the back row suddenly said, "Is it the one we saw in the parking lot that day?"

"You saw it?" I turned my head and looked at Huang Po.

Huang Po glanced at Jiang Lixin and shook his head. "I also saw a yellow paper. It's just that when you mentioned the black cat, I thought of the one that day."

"Chen Zi, did you encounter something strange? Don't forget that the black cat eats dead people's flesh."

I couldn't help but feel a shiver run down my spine. The blindfolded girl vanished in the blink of an eye. To Huang Po and Jiang Lixin, the black cat on the windshield looked like yellow paper.

Could I really be seeing ghosts in broad daylight?

I didn't react much to the black cat, but the blindfolded girl gave me a feeling of familiarity, and there was no eerie aura about her.

She was unlikely to be a ghost, but how did she disappear so suddenly? There were no hiding places around the eaves, so she couldn't have hidden.

Also, what did she mean when she told me not to trust Huang Po and Jiang Lixin?

My mind was full of doubts, but I still started the car and drove off. The blindfolded girl's strange appearance and her claim that I was her future husband were just utterly ridiculous.

She told me not to trust Huang Po and Jiang Lixin, but Huang Po was my long - time friend, and I'd experienced Jiang Lixin's kindness firsthand.

The blindfolded girl was just a random stranger. Even a fool could tell who to believe between strangers and old friends.

Jiang Lixin was very curious when she heard Huang Po and me talking about the black cat and asked about it.

Huang Po told her about the night they encountered a black cat that ate human flesh and blocked their way.

Huang Po described it in detail. I was worried he'd accidentally reveal we were corpse carriers.

Thankfully, this guy was smart enough to avoid those details. Since Jiang Lixin was focused on the strange black cat, we managed to get away with it.

"If that's the case, there's definitely something wrong with this black cat. Eating human flesh, it can't be a good thing," Jiang Lixin said.

"Yeah, this thing must be really evil," Huang Po agreed.

"Chen Feng, you said you saw that black cat just now. Are you being haunted by it?"

"No way. The black cat shouldn't be haunting me," I didn't think so.

The black cat was obviously with the blindfolded girl. I didn't pay attention to the black cat's aura, but the blindfolded girl's aura clearly wasn't that of an evil spirit.

I've seen female corpses, ghosts behind me in a mirror, and terrifying ghosts in my dreams. I can tell the difference in their auras.

"Chen Zi, we first met the black cat and then went to deal with the female corpse. Since then, we haven't had a moment's peace. Now you're being haunted by it. Don't you think there's something wrong with it?"

I couldn't help but feel a pang of unease. I thought Huang Po made some sense, and my impression of the blindfolded girl became a bit more distant.

Just then, I saw in the rearview mirror that Huang Po seemed to be exchanging glances with Jiang Lixin.

I blinked and looked closely, and everything seemed normal. Huang Po was munching on sunflower seeds and looking around randomly. Maybe I was just seeing things.

Jiang Lixin was clearly very interested in these things and wanted to continue asking about the black cat and the female corpse.

I didn't want to talk about this topic anymore. The more you talk, the more mistakes you'll make. Huang Po and I were corpse carriers, and it wasn't a glorious profession.

Women don't like being touched by hands that often handle corpses. It's better to change the topic quickly.

"Jiang Lixin, how powerful is the witch you're taking us to see this time?"

"It can't be just an ordinary fortune - teller. Someone like that definitely won't be able to help," I asked.

"She can definitely help. Our family also believes in this. I've only gone with my dad to have our fortunes told. I haven't seen her show her skills. They say women aren't allowed to watch." Jiang Lixin seemed a bit excited when talking about this.

"What kind of abilities?" I was also quite curious.

I was really at the end of my rope. Hearing Jiang Lixin say there was a way, I just believed it right away.

If the witch really has some skills and they're quite powerful, then my life will be saved.

"Well, I'll talk about the skills later. Do you know how the witch got her skills?" Jiang Lixin, this little girl, actually started to keep me in suspense.

"How did she get them?" I could only helplessly play the role of a straight - man responder.

"She once died for real. She not only stopped breathing but also had no heartbeat, and then came back to life."

"What? How is that possible?"
