Chapter 51 - Expansion of the Medical Clinic

Lin Yue's medical clinic, located in the bustling heart of the town, had started as a modest courtyard with a few rooms, yet it carried the hopes of countless patients. Thanks to Lin Yue's superb medical skills and compassionate medical ethics, the clinic's reputation spread like spring wind through willows, reaching towns and villages far and wide.

Each dawn, as the sky turned fish-belly white and the clinic remained closed, a long queue would form at the door. Among them was an elderly man from a neighboring village, trembling as he leaned on his son's arm, his cloudy eyes filled with longing for healing. He often gazed toward the clinic door, his chapped lips murmuring prayers for recovery. A young mother held her feverish child tightly, the baby's face flushed and listless. The mother's eyes were red with worry as she gently patted her child's back, whispering soothing words while constantly checking the fever with her hand. There were also weary merchants who had traveled far, detouring to the clinic after hearing of its fame, their exhausted faces firm with belief in finding a cure here.

These patients included those with stubborn illnesses who had tried every doctor in vain, now pinning their last hope on Lin Yue's clinic, as well as those with common ailments who trusted the clinic utterly. Li Yi, Lin Yue's close friend and steadfast supporter, watched the endless stream of patients with deep emotion. The clinic's once-spacious hall was now packed to the brim, with temporary chairs lining the corridors for waiting patients. A pale middle-aged man clutched his stomach, frowning as beads of sweat rolled down his forehead, shifting restlessly in his seat to ease the pain. A silver-haired woman sat quietly, her eyes filled with helplessness, clutching a worn cloth bag containing her life savings for treatment.

Lin Yue and the other doctors worked from dawn till dusk without a moment's rest. Seated at the consultation desk, Lin Yue faced a mountain of medical records. As she diagnosed a young girl, her focus was intense: she gently placed her hand on the girl's wrist, closing her eyes to concentrate on the pulse. After a moment, she opened her eyes and asked the girl about her symptoms and daily routine, jotting down notes carefully. The girl answered nervously, her voice trembling, and Lin Yue nodded reassuringly, softly telling her not to worry.

"Lin Yue, this can't go on," Li Yi said one day when the clinic was less busy. "With more patients every day, the clinic can barely hold them. We need a solution." Lin Yue wiped the sweat from her brow and nodded wearily. "I know. I've been thinking about this lately. But expanding the clinic is easier said than done—it requires not just funds, but a suitable site and more doctors and assistants." Li Yi paused, his eyes firm. "I'll handle the funds. I'll talk to the city magistrate about getting support. For the site, we can look for vacant land around the clinic. As for staff, we can train them while expanding." Lin Yue felt a warm surge in her heart. "Thank you, Your Majesty. I don't know what I'd do without you."

Acting swiftly, Li Yi visited the city magistrate that day. The magistrate, an open-minded elder, was already familiar with the clinic's reputation and its importance to the people. Upon hearing Li Yi's proposal, he immediately pledged support, not only allocating funds for expansion but also promising facilitation in site approval. With the magistrate's backing, Li Yi and Lin Yue gained new confidence. They began searching for land around the clinic and eventually found a vacant plot adjacent to it, owned by a wealthy merchant who had left it unused for years. Through Li Yi's negotiations, the land was purchased at a reasonable price.

Next came design and construction. Li Yi hired the city's most renowned architect to create a detailed expansion plan based on the clinic's needs and future growth. The new clinic adopted a classic Chinese architectural style with upturned eaves, carved beams, and painted rafters, harmonizing with the town's ancient charm. The grander main gate featured a new golden plaque inscribed with "Lin Yue Medical Clinic," shining brightly in the sun.

Inside the hall, polished bluestone floors gleamed, and the walls displayed portraits of famous physicians and medical scrolls, adding cultural ambiance while educating waiting patients. A massive solid wood consultation desk stood at the center, neatly arranged with writing tools and medical records. Beyond the hall lay functional areas: new wards in separate courtyards, each with a small garden planted with flowers and trees to soothe patients' minds and aid recovery.

Ward interiors featured comfortable beds with soft mattresses, clean bedding, and bedside cabinets for personal items. Spacious windows let in ample sunlight, keeping rooms warm and bright. The expanded pharmacy was lined with tall wooden cabinets labeled with herb names, equipped with copper handles and advanced tools like grinding utensils and medicinal cauldrons for scientific preparation. The operating room, situated in a quiet corner, used special materials for easy cleaning and sterilization, furnished with state-of-the-art surgical instruments, shadowless lamps, and emergency equipment.

The medical training room was spacious and bright, its walls adorned with anatomical charts and pharmacological diagrams. Neat desks held medical books and writing tools, while a large podium featured a realistic human model for Lin Yue's live demonstrations.

Construction faced hurdles from the start. A labor shortage emerged during the busy farming season, so Li Yi and Lin Yue recruited workers personally, even visiting neighboring villages to persuade them. When timber deliveries were delayed by heavy rain, they rushed to the supplier to resolve the issue, ensuring minimal downtime. Meanwhile, daily clinic operations strained under the expansion, with staff working around the clock to balance patient care and construction coordination.

Undeterred, Lin Yue and Li Yi persevered, believing their efforts would prevail. New buildings rose, wards filled with more beds, and equipment became more sophisticated. The clinic also began training medical students, with Lin Yue as mentor, teaching both skills and ethics to promising young learners.

After months of intense work, the expansion was completed. The renovated clinic offered a transformed experience: a spacious hall, comfortable wards, and advanced facilities. It attracted even more patients and profoundly impacted local healthcare.

- **Optimized Medical Resources**: With additional beds and equipment, the clinic now handles complex surgeries locally, reducing patients' need to travel. For example, new operating rooms enable procedures that were once impossible, easing patient hardship.

- **Talent Cultivation**: The training room produced skilled doctors who either joined the clinic or served in rural medical posts, elevating grassroots healthcare.

- **Industry Competition and Collaboration**: Rival clinics improved services and technology in healthy competition, while regular medical seminars fostered cross-clinic cooperation and knowledge sharing.

- **Shift in Medical Attitudes**: Exhibits in the hall and doctors' daily education helped patients trust scientific medicine over home remedies or superstitions, boosting public health.

Lin Yue and her team continued to work tirelessly, chasing away pain with skill and compassion. Li Yi turned to improving the clinic's management and services, ensuring it would better serve the people. In this hopeful town, Lin Yue's clinic shone like a pearl, lighting the way for patients, witnessing the power of medical ethics and friendship, and telling a story of dreams and perseverance.
