Chapter 2 - Chapter 2: Village Problem

Tevoro awoke to the smell of apples filling his nose. Slowly opening his eyes, he glanced around the room before seeing Jerry hand Hemwick some pie before heading outside. As he opened his eyes, Tevoro noticed Hemwick was already gone. Looking out the window, he saw him talking to Jerry before coming back inside and shutting the door.

"Good morning! Glad to see you're awake."

"More or less."

Tevoro groaned as he placed the book back in its bookshelf. All that reading from the previous night left him with a migraine.

"Hey Hemwick, does any of this seem weird to you?"

Tevoro asked as he gazed at the sky from the window.

"Weird? How so?"

"Well, I mean, neither me and you remember anything meaningful but our names. We know enough about ourselves to function but nothing else. On top of the lack of knowledge, this all gives me a weird sense of déja vu. It's like I've already lived this."

Tevoro's back faced Hemwick, who was also watching the scenery outside the window.

"Well, whatever we feel now isn't important. I don't think simply trying to remember will work. If we want answers, we'll have to just keep on living in this world until we're able to figure out who exactly we are."

Hemwick put his hand on Tevoro's shoulder.

"Anyways, I'm heading out for a bit. Jerry said we're welcome to stay here as long as we need to. As odd of a fellow he is, he's generous taking people like us in. He even left us pumpkin pie."

Tevoro glanced at the pie before looking at Hemwick.

"It might be a good idea to settle down in this village for a bit. I'll see how I can help around."

Tevoro said, before taking a slice of pie. As Hemwick left, Tevoro looked down at the palms of his hands.

"Who exactly am I?"

Tevoro asked himself aloud before springing out of bed and leaving Jerry's abode. Tevoro took in the sight of the village. Young children ran about as the adults worked hard on the farm.

"No! The golem!"

One of the villagers cried out as a circle began to form down in the center of the village. Tevoro took a peak inside to find the destroyed remains of the iron golem him and Hemwick had seen when they had first entered the village. Looking around, he saw fear and panic in the eyes of villagers. Their once great protector was now reduced to a pile of scraps.

"What are we going to do now!?"

"How will we survive through the night!?"

Tevoro observed the looks of despair shown by the villagers. That's when he made his choice.

"I will protect you."

"Excuse me? Aren't you those new people that Jerry took in?"

Replied a villager who overheard Tevoro's comment. How could some random the villagers had never seen before proving useful when they didn't even know of the horrors awaiting them at night.

"Listen up!"

Tevoro shouted.

"Me and my friend will find a way to protect you all, so please place your faith in us. We might be strangers but will prove our value."

The only reward for such a bold declaration were weird looks.

"Maybe that wasn't the right choice..."

Tevoro thought to himself. He moved away from the circle of people and walked along a path as started thinking of a way to stay true to his word.

"If they are trying to keep safe from threats outside at night, why don't they just make a wall?"

Tevoro suddenly had an idea. He spotted Hemwick on the other side of the village and immediately rushed over.

"Hemwick! I need your help!"

"Huh? With what?"

Hemwick looked at Tevoro, clearly puzzled.

"I need your help in making a wall around this village. If we can do that, we can prevent any casualties caused from mobs."

"And how do you suppose we do that?"

They looked at each other for a moment before Tevoro looked around for anything he could use. He pointed towards the forest near the hill which they came from.

"We can use wood, then maybe stone later on."

"How are we supposed to collect that when we don't have the tools? There really isn't much we can do..."

Hemwick glanced at Tevoro before sighing.
