Chapter 23 - Chapter 023: A Bleak Future

"Hnnnn… Vice Admiral Garp!"

Kizaru scratched his head, unsure why Garp was calling him.

"Kizaru, you're with the guy who drove off Kaido, right?"

"Yes, yes, this fish-man is really strong. He actually dared to fight Kaido and even made him retreat!"

"If I had arrived any later, Kaido might've been beaten to death!"

Pfft!

Hearing Kizaru's words, Kisame nearly spat out a mouthful of blood. This guy… seriously exaggerates too much!

Sure, he had fought Kaido, but it was mostly through unorthodox tactics and a battle of endurance.

And now? This bastard was acting like he had almost killed Kaido!

"You damn pervert!"

Kisame grabbed the hilt of Samehada, ready to slash this shameless loudmouth.

"Haha… So that guy is really that strong?"

"I'll be there soon—wait for me!"

"Alright!" Kizaru replied.

---

"Kisame!"

"You had me worried sick!"

The moment Kisame stepped onto the ship, Revy didn't hesitate. She jumped up, wrapped her legs around his thick waist, and hugged his neck tightly.

"Damn it, let go of me!"

Even though their crew got along well, Kisame still wasn't used to such overly enthusiastic greetings. He pried Revy off him and tossed her aside.

"Uwooohhh! Pfft!"

Sanji, who was about to step forward to greet Kisame, immediately spurted blood and collapsed at the sight of Revy's bold move.

Zeff, dressed in his usual chef's attire, glanced at Kisame, completely unharmed—before shifting his wary gaze to Kizaru. Only then did he pick up Sanji and turn to head into the ship's cabin.

"Captain Hoshigaki Kisame, your crew sure is interesting!"

Kizaru watched Zeff enter the cabin and instantly recognized him as a pirate.

It wasn't unheard of for the Marines to recruit former pirates, so he merely found it intriguing.

"They're not a problem, are they?"

"What problem?"

"Their identities."

"Oh… If it were just regular pirates, maybe. But this guy? I don't think it'll be an issue."

Kizaru thought for a moment before responding.

At that moment—

"Haha… So this is the young man who almost killed Kaido?"

Hearing the voice, Kisame turned his head and saw a Marine battleship approaching from the left.

Standing at the ship's railing was a towering, muscular figure…

"A… dog?"

Seeing the distinctive hat on the man's head—and the bag of snacks he was holding—Kisame was stunned.

Wait… isn't this the guy from the Den Den Mushi call?!

Seeing this, Kisame instinctively glanced at the "pervert" beside him.

Why does the Navy… feel so unreliable?

What kind of weird habits do these guys have?

"Vice Admiral Garp!"

Even Kizaru, usually laid-back and sleazy-looking, straightened up a little at the sight of the Marine.

"Haha, Kizaru, I…"

Garp laughed heartily as he stuffed a donut into his mouth.

Then— whoosh… whoosh…

"This guy…"

Watching the middle-aged man suddenly fall asleep mid-sentence, Kisame's beady shark eyes widened to the size of saucers.

What kind of people are in the Navy?!

How does someone fall asleep in the middle of talking?!

As Kisame stared in horror, the so-called "Garp" had already started snoring. A transparent snot bubble inflated from his nose like a balloon.

"…Are all Navy Vice Admirals like this?"

Kisame's mouth twitched. He finally couldn't hold it in anymore and turned to Kizaru.

This is the organization I'm supposed to join?

Can these guys really be trusted?

Talking one second, standing there asleep the next—what is he, some kind of farm mule?!

Pop!

The snot bubble burst with a crisp sound.

Vice Admiral Garp woke up, completely unfazed. He scratched his head and said, "Ah… my bad, I dozed off by accident!"

What the hell?!

"By accident"?!

Kisame turned to Kizaru, lowered his voice, and asked, "Can I quit the Navy?"

"Uh… no," Kizaru replied awkwardly.

Ugh…

Kisame's future looked bleak.

Honestly… even the Akatsuki seemed more reliable than this!

———

The Grand Line

The sea wasn't always rough and violent.

A gentle breeze blew, waves rippled softly.

A seagull soared by, then dropped a huge turd!

Plop! It splashed into the ocean, sending ripples spreading in all directions.

After receiving a new Log Pose from the Marines, Kisame continued his journey through the middle section of the Grand Line.

Even though he was now a Marine Captain in name, he still had to go to Marine Headquarters to receive his official commission.

Through conversations with Garp and Kizaru, he gained a deeper understanding of the world—especially the fact that monsters like Kaido weren't exactly rare in this vast ocean.

———

"Hey, are we really joining the Marines just like that?"

On the deck, Revy dragged over a beach chair and lounged beside Kisame, crossing her long legs as she voiced her doubts.

She had once dreamed of becoming a Marine Admiral, But after wandering the Grand Line with Kisame, she found this carefree life rather enjoyable.

Now, she wasn't so sure if she wanted to be tied down.

"What? Wasn't this your lifelong dream?"

Kisame's eyes briefly glanced at Revy's legs before shifting his gaze back to the calm sea.

"Yeah, but I don't want to become a Marine this soon."

Revy put on her sunglasses, then smirked as she noticed a little brat peeking from the shadows.

She playfully swung her legs and struck a seductive pose.

Pfft!

From the corner, a strange sound erupted. Followed by a series of clattering noises as something tumbled over.

"If you keep this up, that kid's gonna drop dead sooner or later."

Kisame didn't even need to look, he already knew what had happened.

"Relax, we still have time before we reach Marine Headquarters."

"Besides, before that, I want to visit Fish-Man Island."

"So you've got plenty of time."

After speaking, Kisame suddenly recalled something Garp had mentioned—Observation Haki.

He instinctively closed his eyes, trying to sense his surroundings.

A long moment passed…

He opened his eyes and scoffed in frustration.

"Tch… Can't feel a damn thing."

———

Boom! Boom!

Suddenly, the deafening sound of cannon fire echoed across the sea.

Whistle…

BOOM! BOOM!

Explosions erupted as towering waves crashed onto the deck, drenching Revy, who had been sunbathing.

"Ahhh—!!!"

"What the hell?!"

Revy jumped up from her beach chair and looked out to sea.

On the starboard side of their ship, a massive pirate vessel had appeared in the distance.

"Huh? What's that?"

Squinting, Revy noticed that, just like their ship, this pirate ship was also being pulled by a sea creature.

However, compared to their little shark, the beast pulling this enemy vessel was far more imposing.

It looked like a massive sea creature resembling a spotted cow, hauling a gigantic pirate ship behind it.

On the ship's mast, a flag fluttered in the wind—crossed bones and a red, saw-toothed dolphin emblem.

"What pirate crew is this?"

Revy frowned, racking her brain for any memory of this insignia, but nothing came to mind.

Boom! Boom!

A second round of cannon fire roared to life.

Whistle…

A barrage of black cannonballs shot toward them.

"Ahhh—!!! You bastards, again?!"

"Do you think I'm just gonna sit here and take it?!"

Revy's face twisted into a devilish grin, revealing sharp teeth. Furious, she stormed into the cabin.

As explosions continued to erupt, Kisame lazily rose from his beach chair.

Grabbing Samehada and slinging it over his shoulder, he walked to the ship's railing.

His eyes locked onto the distant pirate vessel.

A cruel smile crept onto his lips.

"Heh… Looks like I haven't even officially joined the Marines yet, and people are already lining up to die."
