Chapter 26 - Chapter 26

The grand entrance of the Astoria mansion was a tableau of shadows and opulent darkness.

William, his military uniform a stark contrast to the somber tones of the hallway, marched through the hushed emptiness, the rhythmic clinking of his medals echoing against the marble walls.

A sudden rustle from behind him sent a chill down William's spine. He spun around, his hand instinctively reaching for his sword, only to be met by the sight of Vanessa emerging from the shadows.

Her expression was unreadable, her hazel eyes reflecting the flickering candlelight, but there was a darkness that seemed to seep from her very being, a chill that settled in the pit of William's stomach.

"Did you really think you could escape my notice, William?" She taunts, her voice dripping with disdain.

A palpable tension filled the air, thick and heavy like a suffocating fog. Vanessa, her eyes narrowed, met William's gaze directly, her face a mask of calculated indifference.

She knew. She knew about his secret visit to Elara, his desperate attempt to secure an ally against her. The knowledge hung between them, a tangible force, a silent accusation that hung in the air like a thundercloud.

William, stands his ground, defiance flickering in his eyes, he could sense the atmosphere between him and Vanessa change into danger.

"I don't understand what you're saying, Vanessa" his voice dripping low.

"Don't act like you don't know what I mean," Vanessa purred, her voice a silken whisper that slithered down William's spine, sending shivers of apprehension through him.

Her tone was laced with a chilling certainty, a cold, calculated awareness of his transgression.

"Vanessa, I—" William's voice faltered, a sudden wave of fear washing over him. He was cut off mid-sentence, his breath catching in his throat as Vanessa, with a swift, practiced movement, whipped a gun out from behind her back. The cold steel glinted in the dim light, the barrel aimed directly at his head.

The silence that followed was deafening, the air thick with the scent of gunpowder and the chilling promise of violence.

"Vanessa, put that gun down... We have talked about this already." A hint of fear in his voice.

"No. I know your games with Elara," Vanessa purred, her voice a dangerous whisper that sent chills down William's spine.

"You two think you can expose me, find a way to bring me down, don't you? Well, I know your plans, William. And I won't hesitate to stop them. I won't let you stop me again." Her eyes glinted with a cold, calculating fury, the gun still pointed at his head, a silent threat that hung heavy in the air.

"And I'll make sure you'll suffer worse than Lita," Vanessa sneered, her voice dripping with a chilling venom that sent a shiver down William's spine.

Her eyes, cold and calculating, held a promise of retribution, a promise of a pain far greater than anything he had ever experienced. The gun remained aimed at him, a constant reminder of her power, a testament to the lengths she would go to in order to protect herself.

"I know you, Vanessa," William said, his voice steady despite the tremor in his hand. "You wouldn't really dare to shoot me. Not again. Not after last time." He tried to maintain a façade of calm, even as his heart hammered against his ribs.

He knew she was capable of anything, yet he clung to a sliver of hope, a belief that the threat was just a ploy, a way to intimidate him, to keep him in line.

Vanessa laughed, a harsh, humorless sound that echoed through the empty hallway, sending a wave of unease washing over William. "You think I won't dare to shoot you because of last time?" she scoffed.

"Well, things have changed, William. I've changed. And I'll do anything, anything at all, to stop you, to stop anyone who tries to expose me. No one, not even my own brother, will stand in my way." Her words were laced with a chilling conviction, a stark reminder of her ruthlessness, her unwavering determination to maintain her power.

"Now..." Vanessa walks closer to him closing the distance between them, "Surrender." Her voice firmly cold.

"Your sick, Vanessa" William frowned.
