Chapter 12

Harley POV

The warm water poured down my body as I ran my fingers through my hair, washing it.

I'd been Rhain's prisoner for two days, and I was frustrated.

I wasn't allowed to leave the room unless I wanted to read some books, in which case I'd be escorted by a guard—Kael.

Stepping out of the bathing chamber dressed in a simple gown, I met Kael, who was sitting on the couch with a book in his hand.

He raised his head from the book and stared at me, as if expecting me to try and run out of the room. I looked away with a small frown.

I hadn't seen Rhain or Vivian in two days, and only the gods knew where they were.

Even though it had been two days, my thoughts were still reeling from everything.

I rubbed my hair with the towel, setting it aside before turning to Kael, who was still staring at me.

"Have you ever been outside the Moonwalker Pack?" he asked.

"Thanks to your people, we weren't able to leave our pack because it wasn't safe," I said.

A faint grin appeared on his lips.

"I've never left my pack," I added. "The only ones who were allowed to leave were warriors and hunters." We also have spies we send to vampire countries, but most of them never return. The ones who do come back... come back as vampires to harm my people.

"It was too dangerous."

"I thought werewolves were never afraid of anything," he said.

"If you think we're afraid of your kind, then you're wrong. The women and children are the only ones not allowed to leave because they're the future of our pack."

"Interesting."

"Do vampires have magic?" I asked.

I'd always thought vampires didn't have magic—that is, until two days ago, when Rhain had changed the faces of two vassals into that of my family.

"No," he said, turning his head back to the book he was reading.

I sighed and looked away from Kael. He was absolutely boring to have a conversation with.

I wasn't comfortable here. I wanted to go back to my people. But even if I did escape, would I be able to find them?

Most of them had died during the full moon. Even if there were some survivors, they would have gone into hiding, far away from the vampires.

Also, after what happened the other day, I didn't think I wanted to escape again.

But how could I stay with him? I didn't know how long the journey to Shadowsvale would take. Weeks? Months?

I couldn't stay with him. I couldn't get over the thought that blood had been spilled in my pack because of him.

I could never forget that my family was dead because of his kind. I could never trust a vampire like him.

I was so deep in thought that sleep started to pull me under.

"Harley."

I jerked awake, opening my eyes to see Kael's face in front of me.

"What?"

"If you want to sleep, position yourself better. I was starting to think you were dead," he said.

"It's something werewolves do to protect themselves from predators," I muttered.

He didn't move. Instead, he continued to stare at me.

"I'm alive. Why would you even think I was dead?" I asked.

"Because you could try to kill yourself," he said. "The King warned me about that."

"I'm not going to kill myself."

He took a step back.

"Where is Rhain?" I asked.

"Taking care of some things."

"What things?"

"Vampire business."

I arched a brow in confusion.

He grinned. "You'll understand what I mean soon."

"You should leave. I'm fine."

"Are you hungry? I can ask—"

"No, thank you. I want to be alone."

"The King would be angry if—"

I gritted my teeth. "I don't care about him."

"But he cares about you," he said. "Or maybe he's just doing this to make you feel comfortable before ending your life to lift the curse."
