Chapter 40 - Chapter 40: The Breaking Point

POV: Male Lead (Min-jae)

Min-jae stood at the rooftop edge of his penthouse, his fingers tightening around the glass in his hand.

His heart felt like it was torn in two.

Ha-neul.

The woman he loved more than anything—yet the one person he could never have without betraying himself.

His mind screamed at him to stay away.

But his heart?

It was already running back to her.

A sharp knock on the door interrupted his thoughts.

"Hyung," a familiar voice called.

Min-jae sighed. "Come in."

Ji-soo stepped inside, her expression serious. "Did you hear the news?"

Min-jae's grip on the glass tightened. "What news?"

She hesitated. "Ha-neul's engagement to Kang Do-hyun is being announced tomorrow."

The glass shattered in his hand.

Blood trickled down his palm, but he barely felt it.

Ji-soo's eyes widened. "Min-jae—"

He turned away, his mind spinning.

She was getting engaged.

His Ha-neul.

And he was the one who had pushed her away.

A Dangerous Decision

That night, Min-jae sat alone in his car, parked outside Ha-neul's house.

Lights flickered from her bedroom window.

His phone buzzed.

Ji-soo: Don't do anything reckless.

Min-jae ignored the message.

Because at that moment, nothing mattered except one thing—

He had to see her.

He stepped out of the car, heart pounding, and climbed over the gate like he had done countless times before.

He knew the security system inside and out.

Within minutes, he was standing outside her window.

His fingers curled into a fist, and before he could stop himself—

He knocked.

The curtains shifted.

Then the window slid open.

And there she was.

Ha-neul stared at him, her eyes wide with shock. "Min-jae…?"

His throat tightened.

He had no right to be here.

But the moment he saw her, all his resolve crumbled.

Without thinking, he climbed inside, grabbed her by the waist, and pulled her into a desperate kiss.

Her hands pushed against his chest—at first.

But then, she melted into him, her arms wrapping around his neck.

When they finally broke apart, she whispered, "Why are you here?"

He cupped her face. "Because you're mine, Ha-neul."

Tears welled in her eyes. "Then fight for me."

Min-jae exhaled sharply. "I don't know how."

Her voice trembled. "Then learn. Before it's too late."

Her words hit him like a bullet.

Because for the first time, he realized—

If he didn't fight for her now…

He might lose her forever.

Do-hyun's Next Move

Across the city, Kang Do-hyun smirked as he scrolled through the security footage on his phone.

He had expected Min-jae to break.

And just like that, the game was falling right into place.

He turned to his assistant. "Release the footage tomorrow."

The assistant hesitated. "Are you sure?"

Do-hyun chuckled. "Let's see how the world reacts when they find out Yoo Ha-neul's been sneaking around with another man—the night before her engagement."

His assistant nodded and left.

Do-hyun swirled his drink, his smile widening.

Min-jae could fight all he wanted.

But in the end, he would still lose.
