Chapter 13 - Episode 13: The Key

Angel turned back his head to the voice of Cain.

"But this is a Winged Guard! There's no way I can defeat in my level.", Malachi said.

"I believe you can do it, after all... You're my brother.", Cain said reassuringly.

"Ah!", Angel turned back to the ghoul and barely dodged its attack.

Angel tried to observe the Malachi's method of defeating the ghoul while avoiding it.

Cain handed a cane to Malachi. A no ordinary cane but one that extends to the form of a spear.

"You always held a spear in the training grounds, so I wanted to gift you something I thought you'd like.", Cain said.

"It feels... right. Thanks brother, I will not fail you.", Malachi said with determination.

He took his stance with the spear in his right hand. Cain unleashed the blood chains that kept the Winged Guard shackled in place.

As Angel watched, he imitated Malachi's stance. The Winged Guard descended upon Angel as it happened in the memories.

Instinct took over. Angel dropped the blood projectiles and used the spear once again. Angel parried a vicious swipe of a talon with the shaft of the spear, the impact slightly jarring his arm just as it happened to Malachi.

The Winged Guard kept itself at the air, buffeting Angel with gale-force winds with it leathery wings, forcing Angel to stumble.

Angel felt himself being outmatched in raw power and aerial agility, both then and now. But, the memory offered a key. Malachi was calm and focused, allowing him to sharpen his senses.

Angel tried the same, pushing past his nervousness of death, focusing on the subtle cues. Due to this, Angel saw it, the uneven beat of the Winged Guard's left wing in the memory, a slight hitch.

Reacting to the recalled instinct, Angel willed the spear to change. The solid crimson blood flowed and reshaped, the smooth shaft elongating, the point splitting and extending into a wickedly barbed trident in his hands.

Armed with greater reach, Angel spun, lashing out. The sweeping motion caught the Winged Guard's left wing in the spear.

A screech of pain followed, causing it to shriek loudly but Angel remained composed despite it's efforts to break free from the spear.

Angel anchored the spear to the ground and unleashed blood projectiles to it's unguarded arms and soon after, it hit its head.

The Winged Guard fell to the ground and the blood spear returned to Angel's bloodstream.

He walked the hallway, and was met with two doors that led inside to a small office with a bed on the side.

Inside the table's drawer, a dark ruby colored key was inside.

Before Angel could grab it, a man stood at the room's door step, watching Angel.

"Who are you?", Angel asked coldly.

Angel immediately readied his spear. The man walked to him and looked outside the window.

"So you're that boy? I'm looking forward to seeing you in the future."

The man said as he disappeared in Angel's shadow.

Angel was kept frozen in place from the man's pressure.

As soon as he regained his senses, Angel gripped the key and was brought to the ceremony site, where he was being waited as he was the last one.

"Congra-", Theodore stopped as he felt the unsettling crimson energy he felt from Angel's key.

Evander saw Theodore's expression and guided Angel to the other freshmen in his stead.

"Theodore, you look... pale all of a sudden.", Evander said.

"It's nothing, its a trait we all have.", Theodore replied.

The night came and the ceremony ended after the banquet that was held. Angel kept his distance from the others especially from Latisha, a possible opponent he would have in the future.

Using the key, Angel was returned to the office bedroom by simply holding it tight.

"What an interesting feature.", Angel said as he looked at the key.

The key was able to turn into a dark ruby bracelet by infusing demonic energy into the key.

Angel looked around the office table and the books before laying himself down in the bed, resting all the fatigue gained from the ceremony.

"So this is my exclusive room. Haha, to think I'd be the one to possess the vampire's hidden key.", Angel chuckled before turning off the lights.

In the roof of the office bedroom, two people stood as they looked at the moon.

"As overprotective as always, are you Lance?", Malachi chuckled.

"I'm merely following my master's wishes.", Lance replied.

"You'll need to return to the campus, you're a professor after all.", Malachi said.

"I'll, stay here for a bit. It has been a long time since I watched someone from the shadows.", Lance answered.

"Suit yourself.", Malachi said as he disappeared in the air.

"Just what was the lord thinking of making me his mentor...", Lance sat in confusion.

The next day arrived, all of the students were divided into their respective classrooms.

Angel fell inside the same classroom with Latisha.

"Seriously... what is with my luck in class?", Angel slouched his head at the table.

Soon after, a student ran to the door and quickly informed their class that their professor is coming.

"I wonder...", Angel widened at the surprise.

"He's that guy who was standing at the doorstep back in the ceremony.", Angel muttered.

All the students inside were then in an uproar as they saw their homeroom professor.

"Wait what? Why is everybody getting riled up?", Angel looked at the students behind him and at the front.

"You're a vampire and you don't know him?", Latisha said.

"What, why are you here?", Angel asked.

"Well since, it's hard to sit with somebody you don't know.", Latisha replied.

"But... I don't know you too.", Angel replied.

"Enough about that, anyway, how do you not know him!?", Latisha exclaimed.

"I just don't, okay.", Angel answered.

"Huff, you're surely a weird one but I'll take the privilege to answer you.", Latisha said.

"That man is Lance Corvin, though he is a half-blood, but, he's more widely known as the very captain of the vampire faction's elite unit Shadow Hounds.", Latisha said.

Angel turned back his attention to Lance and noticed that Lance was looking at him directly in the eye.

"Hello everybody, I am Lance Corvin and I will be your professor till the end of our year together."
