Chapter 12 - Chapter 12: Ordinary Happiness

At this moment, Denji picked up the clothes and buried her face in them, taking a deep breath.

However, all she could smell was the scent of laundry detergent, as Chiya hadn't worn these clothes yet.

A while later, Denji came out of the bathroom.

She was wearing Chiya's T-shirt and pants. Due to her severe malnutrition and her body not yet fully developed, the clothes hung loosely on her small frame.

The hem of the T-shirt reached halfway down her thighs, and thankfully, it was short-sleeved, so her arms could still poke out of the sleeves.

The pant legs dragged on the floor, and she had to hold up the waistband to keep the pants from falling down.

"Too big, as expected."

This was within Chiya's expectations. Fortunately, the pants were sweatpants with a drawstring, so he tightened it for Denji, ensuring the waistband wouldn't slip down.

"It's getting late. Time to sleep."

Chiya noticed it was already 11 PM.

Denji was at an age where she needed to eat and sleep well to grow properly.

Luckily, when he had bought furniture earlier, he had been bored and furnished the other bedroom as well, which was now perfect for Denji.

Before closing the bedroom door, Denji whispered, "Goodnight, Chiya-nii~"

"Woof~"

Pochita also seemed to be saying goodnight to Chiya.

"Goodnight."

Chiya replied warmly.

After closing the door, Denji looked at the beautiful, soft bed in front of her and felt a surge of excitement.

She jumped onto the bed, and Pochita followed suit.

"This is so comfortable!"

Denji exclaimed happily. "Pochita, we're really not dreaming, are we?"

"Woof woof!"

Pochita agreed enthusiastically.

Denji rolled around on the bed, hugging the blanket, then suddenly stopped and asked Pochita, "Pochita, do you think Chiya-nii likes me too? Otherwise, why would he be so nice to me just because he has a grudge against the yakuza?"

She had never met anyone who treated her so well—not just well, but exceptionally well. He had helped her solve her endless debt, paid her water and electricity bills, given her delicious food, a soft bed, and let her take a hot bath to her heart's content…

Earlier, Chiya had instructed the Zombie Devil to leave the 10,000 yen on the table in the shack. When the utility bill collector came looking for Denji the next day, they would naturally see the money. After all, the Zombie Devil didn't need money.

"Woof~"

Pochita barked, but no one could understand what he was saying. However, it was clear that he was quite happy.

"The ordinary life I've always dreamed of… I never thought it would come true so quickly. And now, this life is more than just ordinary."

Denji couldn't help but sigh.

That night, she slept more peacefully and comfortably than she ever had before.

Meanwhile, in his own bedroom, Chiya silently opened his system panel.

[Host: Otonashi Chiya]

[Strength: 10]

[Speed: 11]

[Vitality: 45]

[Distributable Attribute Points: 17]

"I've used Kamui's ability three times today, and it's been a bit of a struggle each time. I think it's time to allocate some attribute points to other stats…"

Chiya thought to himself.

Although "Vitality" was currently the most important attribute, that didn't mean "Strength" and "Speed" were irrelevant.

In the world of Chainsaw Man, it wasn't just about demonic powers—martial arts also played a significant role.

Top-tier devil hunters often had strong martial arts skills.

For example, Kishibe, arguably the strongest devil hunter among pure humans, relied mostly on martial arts now that he was older and had little left to exchange with devils. He had become the strongest human purely through his physical skills.

As for someone like Quanxi, she couldn't really be considered human anymore, as she was a weapon human, so she wasn't included in this comparison.

These two were the most representative martial arts experts.

"Strength" and "Speed" were the two main aspects of martial arts, and "Vitality" was also crucial.

Chiya didn't want to rely too heavily on Kamui's abilities. By strengthening his martial arts to a certain level, he could easily handle strong enemies using just the basic abilities of the Mangekyō Sharingan.

[Ding! Distribution complete. Vitality +8, Strength +5, Speed +4!]

[Strength: 15]

[Speed: 15]

[Vitality: 53]

Chiya felt a comprehensive boost in his abilities. His physical strength increased significantly, and his movement speed, reaction speed, and other aspects of speed improved noticeably.

From now on, his plan was to focus on "Vitality," but he wouldn't neglect "Strength" and "Speed" too much.

This way, his "arsenal" would be well-rounded, allowing him to use different strategies against different enemies.

...

The next day.

Chiya woke up early and prepared two servings of breakfast. He then went to knock on Denji's door to wake her up.

A while later, Denji walked out, still half-asleep, holding Pochita in her arms like a stuffed toy.

"Good morning, Chiya nii-chan~"

"Good morning. Go wash up and have a breakfast."

Chiya had thought ahead when buying furniture and had stocked the bathroom with disposable toiletries.

Breakfast was simple—hot milk and fried eggs—but Denji enjoyed it immensely.

She cherished "ordinary happiness." Even the simplest things could make her feel happy, like having three meals a day.

At this point, Chiya asked Denji, "By the way, Denji, do you want to go to school? Most kids at your age are in school."

If Denji wanted to, getting her into school wouldn't be difficult for him. All it would take was enough money.

Denji thought for a moment. "...I've never been to school, so I'm curious about what it's like. But if I go to school, I can't be with Pochita. Pochita would cry."

There was once when she didn't see Pochita at home and went out to look for him for a long time, only to find him hiding in a corner, crying.

So now, wherever she went, she and Pochita were inseparable.

"Alright, I understand."

Chiya respected Denji's wishes and certainly wouldn't force her to go to school.

Besides, education wasn't something that had to happen in a school. It could also be done at home.

For example, hiring a tutor who wasn't afraid of Pochita. Once he had more funds, he could try hiring one.

"However, I'll be going to work soon. When I get back, I'll take you to buy new clothes. You and Pochita can watch the house. You can go out to play if you want, but remember to lock the door. Here's a spare key."

Chiya handed Denji a set of spare keys.

"Got it. You can leave the house to me and Pochita. If any thieves dare to come in, I'll saw them up!"

As she spoke, Denji made a sawing motion with her hands.

"Woof!"

Pochita barked in agreement.

Chiya smiled. With Denji and Pochita watching the house, he could rest easy.

Unless… Makima decided to "steal the house" while he was away.
