Chapter 34 - Ch 34 : Unknown Assailants

The tension in the air was palpable as Renji and his teammates emerged from the now-collapsing dungeon. Dust swirled in the air, and the ground trembled beneath their feet as they made their way through the crumbling corridors. The once-steady, echoing hum of the dungeon had been replaced with the chaotic sounds of falling debris, the roar of collapsing walls, and the eerie rumblings of the structure falling apart. They had barely escaped, but they had made it.

Mika Ishida, her face streaked with dirt and blood, let out a ragged breath, her hands trembling. She could feel the residual energy from her kinetic blasts lingering in her palms. The constant use of her ability had drained her, but she couldn't afford to slow down now. "That was too close," she muttered, wiping her face with the back of her hand.

Takeshi Mori, his enhanced physique allowing him to withstand the punishment of the dungeon's dangers better than most, grunted as he moved forward, his body bruised but unbroken. His large frame was a formidable sight, yet there was a look of concern in his eyes as he scanned their surroundings. "We can't keep running forever. We need a place to regroup."

Yumi Takahashi, who had been unusually quiet during their escape, her shadow abilities manifesting as dark tendrils that slithered at her feet, glanced back towards the entrance they'd just exited. "It's not over," she whispered, her voice low and grim. "The danger's still out there."

Kaito Nakamura, his fists crackling with electrical energy from his punch ability, shifted uncomfortably. He was used to the feeling of his own power, but the constant strain of having to fight their way out was taking its toll. "We need to find shelter," he said, his voice tense. "Fast."

Renji, his dark eyes heavy with fatigue, nodded at his teammates. His body ached from the strain of the battle, but his mind was racing. His resolve was stronger than ever; he couldn't afford to stop now. The fear of losing control, of succumbing to the very mutation that had made him strong, gnawed at him. But he wasn't going to let that happen—not after everything they had been through. He had made it out of that hellhole, and he wouldn't let his teammates down. Not now.

"Let's move," Renji said, his voice cold but determined.

The team made their way through the dense, humid forest that surrounded the dungeon's entrance. It wasn't long before they reached the small hideout they had been using as a base of operations. The small cabin, built by Renji's hands after their escape from the initial outbreak, had been a sanctuary for them—a place to regroup, recover, and plan their next moves. But as they approached, the familiar outline of the cabin soon turned to shadow.

Something was wrong.

Renji's gaze sharpened as he noticed the smoldering ruins in the distance. The trees surrounding their hideout were scorched, branches burned to cinders, and the cabin itself had been reduced to a pile of charred rubble. His heart sank. He could feel the weight of the situation press down on him like a physical force.

"What the hell happened here?" Mika's voice was thick with disbelief as she took a step back, eyes wide with shock. "We were only gone a few hours..."

Takeshi clenched his fists, his jaw tight. "This doesn't look like a natural disaster," he said, scanning the area for signs of life. But there was no sign of anyone—no sign of survivors. Only destruction.

Yumi's shadowy tendrils coiled at her feet, her sharp senses picking up on the atmosphere of danger that still lingered in the air. "We're not alone," she muttered. Her eyes flicked around the area, her head tilting slightly as if listening for something beyond the normal. "There's something here. Something... off."

Kaito's body crackled with static, his power surging in response to the threat that hung heavy in the air. "Who would do this? This isn't just an attack—it's an ambush."

Renji's hands clenched into fists at his sides, the anger and helplessness inside him bubbling to the surface. This wasn't just a random raid—this was personal. They'd been targeted, and it was clear that whoever had done this wasn't just after the supplies. No, they had come for them.

Renji's instincts screamed at him to stay alert, to watch for any movement, but everything felt eerily still. Too still.

"Someone did this," Renji said, his voice low, and filled with a simmering rage. "And I'm going to make them pay."

The group ventured cautiously into the wreckage of their hideout. There was no immediate threat, but the sense of danger was thick in the air. The remnants of their belongings—scattered equipment, food supplies, weapons—lay discarded or destroyed. Renji's heart hardened at the sight. This place had been their only semblance of safety, and now it was gone.

"Mika, Yumi—see if you can find any traces of who did this," Renji ordered, his voice growing more commanding as he took in the full extent of the damage. His mind was already at work, considering their options. "Takeshi, Kaito—help me salvage what we can."

The two pairs of teammates nodded and split off, their focus sharp. Mika's kinetic ability gave her a heightened sense of the environment, allowing her to feel any vibrations that could point to the presence of others. Yumi used her shadows to slip through the wreckage, her dark abilities allowing her to move silently, blending into the environment.

Renji, alongside Takeshi and Kaito, moved toward the remnants of what had been their weapons cache. A few supplies had survived the destruction, though much had been reduced to nothing but ash. Renji felt a pang of frustration at the thought that all of their hard-earned equipment had been destroyed, but it was the people they had lost that weighed heavier on his mind.

"They'll pay for this," Renji muttered under his breath, his voice sharp. "We didn't survive the dungeon just to be wiped out here."

Takeshi, always the optimist, gave him a grim smile, though the worry was evident in his eyes. "I agree. We'll find them, Renji. We'll make them regret this."

Kaito, his expression serious, gave a nod. "We can't afford to lose focus. We'll track them down, and we'll finish what we started."

Renji didn't say anything. Instead, he turned his gaze back to the wreckage. He could feel the familiar anger simmering in his chest. But this time, it was different. This time, he wasn't just angry at the world or the monsters. He was angry at those who had destroyed what little peace they had left.

The faint sound of Mika's voice brought him back to the present. "Found something!" she called from across the clearing.

Renji quickly moved toward her, his teammates following closely behind. When they reached her, she was standing over a patch of scorched earth, her expression intense as she knelt down to inspect the ground.

"There are traces of someone else's footprints here," Mika said, her voice strained as she pointed to the faint, but distinct markings in the dirt. "And these aren't from any regular humans... they're too irregular. Something about the way they're positioned, it's almost like—"

"Like they were running," Renji finished for her, his eyes narrowing as he took in the footprints. "Whoever did this... they're still here."

Yumi's voice rang out from a few feet away. "There's something else." She was standing by the edge of what had once been a makeshift entrance, her eyes scanning the horizon. "I sense something. I think they left in a hurry."

Takeshi moved up beside Renji, his voice low but full of conviction. "Then we'll find them. We'll hunt them down."

Renji nodded, his expression hardening. The destruction of their hideout wasn't just an attack—it was a declaration of war. And Renji would make sure the rogue infected paid the price for their recklessness.

"Let's move out," Renji ordered, his voice cutting through the tension like a blade. "We're not done yet."
