~Author's POV~
Midday light filtered through Lecture Hall Five's tall windows, casting quiet slants of gold across the desks.
Inside, the room was packed. The students sat upright, half bored, half curious, as the tall man at the front paced slowly before the board.
Professor Draven.
He was dressed in a fitted, tailored grey suit with a silver lining and a pocket watch always clipped at his side. The man turned, his emerald green eyes sweeping the room with bored authority.
"Before we begin today's lesson on diplomatic balance between central and borderland packs," he began smoothly, "I'd like to note that Ms. Valerie Nightshade has reported herself ill and won't be joining us today."
At once, there was a ripple through the class. Some heads turned. Some whispers stirred. But one figure reacted instantly.
