Chapter 20 - Victory party

The dim, flickering lights of the Snake's Coil tavern cast a warm, amber glow over the rough wooden tables and stone walls. The scent of roasted meat, freshly baked bread, and ale filled the air as laughter and music rose to meet the rafters. Adventurers, townspeople, and guild members packed the room, celebrating the victorious clearing of the first floor of the dungeon.

Jaxon, Kade, Elias, Reed, and Sinthia sat at the largest table near the hearth, where flames crackled merrily. Despite the chaos of the dungeon and the battles they had faced, there was a sense of peace and camaraderie here, as though the city itself had taken a deep breath after their success.

Jaxon leaned back in his chair, his symbiote quietly pulsing beneath his cloak, content for once. He sipped from a tankard of some local brew, watching the room with his usual calm detachment. "Not bad," he said, glancing at Kade, who sat across from him.

Kade smirked, his chains resting dormant around his wrists. "Could be worse. We're not dead."

"Yet," Elias added with a grin, flicking one of his enchanted cards between his fingers. He glanced sideways at Sinthia, who sat beside him. She laughed softly, her amber eyes sparkling in the firelight.

Reed, meanwhile, was busy healing the occasional adventurer who limped over to their table. His golden Healing Domain flickered faintly around his hands as he mended a sprained ankle with ease. "You should really be more careful," he said to a young rogue who thanked him profusely before scurrying back to her friends.

The tavern doors swung open, and a group of adventurers entered, their armor dented and bloodstained but their faces alight with triumph. They had just returned from the upper floors of the dungeon, and their cheers echoed through the room as they spotted Jaxon and the others.

"Hey! You're the ones who cleared the first floor, right?" called a burly warrior with a thick beard and a friendly grin. He made his way over to their table, clapping Jaxon on the back with enough force to rattle his drink. "Name's Garrick. Heard about your fight with the dire wolves. Impressive work."

Jaxon nodded, accepting the compliment with a brief smile. "Thanks. Those wolves were fast, but we managed."

A slender elf with silver hair and piercing blue eyes joined Garrick, her gaze sweeping over the group with curiosity. "I'm Liora," she said, her voice as cool as winter air. "You must be quite skilled to have survived that encounter."

"We had a good team," Sinthia said, smiling at Elias.

Elias felt a small flush rise to his cheeks but quickly masked it with a grin. "And a little luck."

More adventurers drifted over, and soon their table was crowded with new faces. There was Kaelen, a rogue with a mischievous grin and a quick wit, and Mira, a mage who carried a staff topped with a glowing crystal. They traded stories of battles fought and treasures found, and laughter rang out as they recounted their most ridiculous near-death experiences.

As the night wore on, the tavern grew louder, the music faster, and the drinks stronger. Someone started a game of cards near the hearth, and Elias was drawn into it, easily winning the first few rounds with his quick reflexes and sharp mind. Sinthia cheered him on, her laughter bright and infectious.

Reed found himself in a conversation with Mira, the mage, discussing different healing spells and their applications in combat. Mira was impressed by his control over his Healing Domain and asked if he could teach her a few techniques. Reed agreed, glad to share his knowledge.

Kade, meanwhile, stood near the edge of the room, observing the revelry with his usual quiet intensity. He wasn't one for parties, but he didn't mind being here. He watched as Jaxon leaned against the wall, exchanging stories with Garrick and Kaelen. Kade could tell Jaxon was enjoying himself, even if he didn't show it outwardly.

As the night deepened, the group began to relax, the bonds between them growing stronger. They had fought together, bled together, and now, they celebrated together. This was more than just a party—it was the beginning of something larger. A family forged in battle and bound by loyalty.

By the time the tavern began to empty, they were all exhausted but happy. They had made new friends, shared their triumphs, and strengthened their resolve for the challenges ahead.

As they left the tavern, the cool night air wrapped around them like a comforting cloak. Sinthia walked beside Elias, their hands brushing occasionally. Neither of them spoke, but the silence between them was warm and filled with unspoken promises.

Jaxon glanced back at the others, his eyes reflecting the moonlight. "Get some rest," he said quietly. "Tomorrow, we keep moving."

And as they made their way through the quiet streets of Snake's Coil, they knew that whatever lay ahead—whether it was dungeons, monsters, or ancient secrets—they would face it together.
