"Elena, Mr. Kane wants to see you in his office," a colleague said, breaking her out of her thoughts.
She nodded, smoothing her skirt as she stood. "Thanks."
Walking through the hallway, she prepared herself for anything. Jordan Kane, the branch director, rarely called people in without good reason.
"Mr. Kane," she said after knocking lightly, then stepping inside. "You asked to see me?"
He didn't look up. "Close the door."
She complied, brows knitting in confusion. "Is something wrong?"
Jordan finally looked up from his screen, fixing her with a calm, unreadable stare. "I just wanted to confirm that you're still planning to transfer to Cross Enterprises headquarters. If you'd prefer to stay here, I can promote you to product manager. You'd have a stronger voice here, more room to grow."
Elena blinked. The offer was generous, unexpected even. Was he trying to keep her from leaving?
