Under the director's guidance, Lin Mei was soon escorted to a classroom.
"Mr. Lin, this is it!"
The director pushed open the classroom door with a flourish. The loud chatter of students greeted them immediately.
The director smiled awkwardly, sensing the noise, and led Lin Mei to the podium. He tapped his fingers on the desk to gain the students' attention. "Quiet down, everyone!" he called.
Despite the rowdy noise, the students in the gifted class quickly fell silent, though a few rebellious ones remained unfazed. Lin Mei's sharp eyes immediately caught sight of them — a group of "thorns" sitting at the back rows.
The director, with a forced smile, introduced Lin Mei: "This is Lin Mei, our new transfer student. He will be joining this class from now on. I trust you'll all get along well." His gaze momentarily flickered toward the back corner, a silent warning directed at the troublemakers.
After the introduction, the director shifted his tone, his smile widening. "Now, Lin Mei, where would you like to sit?"
Unlike Dragon Kingdom classrooms, there were no traditional desks. The students sat in pairs around the room.
Lin Mei scanned the room, his eyes landing on a familiar figure. It was Gwen Stacy, a student with the highest grades in the class. She was smiling at him, and Lin Mei could tell that, had the director not been present, she would have greeted him more warmly.
Coincidentally, there was an empty seat next to her. Lin Mei walked over, making his way toward the seat.
This action didn't go unnoticed. Most of the students were now staring, as Lin Mei's choice of seat was no accident — it was next to Gwen, the top student.
The director, unfazed by the attention, switched on the lesson plan. "Alright, since class has already started, let's continue from where we left off."
Lin Mei settled into his seat, but he didn't have books or stationery. He was already well-versed in the material, having taught himself at home. His mind wandered as the lesson continued, uninterested in what the director was saying.
A few moments later, a crumpled piece of paper hit the back of Lin Mei's head. Instinctively, he caught it. Turning slightly, he locked eyes with the student who had thrown it — a tall guy who stood out in the back row.
The student grinned and made a taunting face, clearly intending to provoke the new student. However, the cold, sharp gaze from Lin Mei made the student freeze. The group of rebellious students, who had been watching intently, seemed confused by their leader's sudden shift in behavior. Slowly, they pulled back their paper projectiles, unsure of what had just happened.
Lin Mei, however, paid little attention to the childish antics. After all, despite his youthful appearance, he wasn't one to be easily provoked.
The class moved quickly, and before long, the bell rang, signaling the end of the lesson. As the students erupted into their usual chatter, Lin Mei was left in the midst of the chaos.
Suddenly, a bright, cheerful voice cut through the noise.
"That's amazing, Lin! I didn't expect us to be classmates!"
Gwen Stacy was standing at Lin Mei's side, her eyes sparkling with excitement. Her smile seemed to light up the room, a refreshing contrast to the otherwise noisy classroom. It was clear she was happy to see him.
"Yes, Gwen, I didn't expect to meet you here either." Lin Mei replied with a warm smile. He had always been impressed by her intelligence and kindness.
"Are you new here? Not familiar with the place yet? Do you need any help?" Gwen asked eagerly. She quickly pulled out a notebook and a few pens from her bag and placed them on Lin Mei's desk. "You can use these for now. Later, I'll help you get your own supplies."
Lin Mei smiled, touched by her generosity. "Thank you, Gwen, but I don't think I'll need them. The curriculum here is pretty similar to what I've already studied at home." He said this with a blend of confidence and humility, giving her a nod of appreciation.
As the two of them conversed, the other students began to take notice, intrigued by the new arrival. The troublemakers, who had been throwing paper earlier, grew quiet, sizing up the newcomer.
Then, from the back of the room, a voice broke the silence. "Hey, newcomer! I heard you're really full of yourself. What do you say to meeting me after school on the playground?"
It was the same student who had thrown the paper. Standing tall, he puffed out his chest, trying to assert dominance.
Lin Mei turned his head slightly, his eyes meeting the student's with calm detachment. "Sorry, I have other plans after school," he said, his tone unbothered yet firm. "I'm not interested in wasting time on pointless provocations."
His response was measured and resolute, making it clear that he wouldn't be intimidated by such petty challenges.
The moment Lin Mei spoke, it not only stunned the tall student but also caused the classmates around him to pause in surprise. They hadn't expected this seemingly quiet, weak freshman to directly reject the challenge with such confidence.
Noticing the tension, Gwen quickly stepped forward and positioned herself between Lin Mei and Thompson. She raised her voice slightly, her tone firm yet gentle. "Eugene, we're all classmates here. We should show each other respect, not start conflicts the moment we meet."
"Eugene?" Lin Mei thought, his mind making the connection. Could this be Lightning Thompson, the one who bullied Spider in high school? Lin Mei had heard of this troublemaker, but he hadn't expected to encounter him here.
Thompson, clearly taken aback by Gwen's intervention, fumed silently. Though unwilling to back down, he reluctantly turned and sat back in his seat, his challenge left hanging in the air. Lin Mei offered Gwen a grateful glance, his respect for her growing.
If Melissa were here, she would surely be relieved, Lin Mei thought. At least I'm not the type to get into unnecessary trouble.
The bell rang, signaling the end of the break and the beginning of the next lesson.
Meanwhile, outside the classroom, Lin Mei's driver arrived, bringing a set of books to the school. At least Lin Mei wouldn't have to face the dullness of an empty desk again.
In a SHIELD facility, Nick Fury watched Lin Mei through a monitor, his eyes fixed on the young student. Colson, having just returned from a mission, noticed his boss's intense focus. Quietly, he approached Nick Fury.
"Do you think we should include this kid in the plan?" Nick Fury suddenly asked.
Colson stopped in his tracks, taken aback. "Including a kid in our operations? Isn't that child labor? Isn't that illegal?"
Nick Fury raised an eyebrow, clearly amused by Colson's response. "Well, technically yes, but this kid's abilities are undeniably impressive. Don't you think?"
Colson blinked in surprise. "Nick, did you forget that Lin Mei is Chinese?"
The words came out with a subtle undercurrent of caution, as though hinting at something deeper — a possible cultural or political concern that might complicate matters.
At Colson's remark, a thoughtful expression crossed Nick Fury's face. He nodded slowly, a hint of recognition in his eyes. "You make a good point, Colson." He paused, a rare smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. "But you know, ability doesn't have national boundaries. If Lin Mei's talent aligns with our goals, then he's the kind of asset we need, no matter where he's from."
His voice, calm and authoritative, resonated with the weight of a decision-maker. Nick Fury, ever the strategist, knew that talent — not nationality — was what mattered most when it came to achieving his objectives.
