Chapter 13 - 13. Late night visit 1

Edith stood before the window, her eyes staring at the crescent moon. Her dark hair seems to reflect the light, reminding her of her hair's true nature and color. Even her skin radiated with moonlight's soft glow as if she were an object that attracted the light.

Her maids who had seen this were amazed. After breakfast in the morning, they all came to know that she wasn't human like they had all initially thought, which left them all curious and guessing. But seeing her like this, they couldn't quite tell anymore.

She was neither a vampire nor a beastman female. She didn't look like any of the non-human species that they had seen or heard of either. None looked as ethereal as she did in this very moment. They were dying to ask her but none had the courage to voice it. In the end, they all silently decided to keep up the guessing game.

While her four admirers kept on staring at her, Edith was oblivious to it all, her mind occupied with the events of the day.

Her feelings, she could no longer understand them. She had always been quite sure of herself and her ability to control her emotions, but that seems to be slipping off her fingers quite easily now. Today, she confirmed it.

At the dining room during breakfast, Davion. Never said anything that could ruin her mood, but somehow, she felt anger and betrayal, and…. Hurt. She had cast accusatory glares at him since that moment, but she couldn't even explain why. Not even to herself.

"You are all dismissed for the night," she said, turning around slowly while the girls held their breaths. The moon reflecting behind her looked like a goddess was standing before them. Her bright and deep blue eyes also shone beautifully, further increasing her radiance.

Edith noticed their weird behavior but assumed it was a human thing.

"Your skin, it's so…. brilliantly… breathtaking," Brianna said, even stepping forward with her eyes sparkling. She looked entranced and enchanted.

Edith was taken aback by that, but then she realized what was happening. Last night was a moonless night due to the rain. But tonight…

She looked over her shoulder and saw the moon. It wasn't a full moon, but it was still up there.

"Mother would give me an earful if she saw this," Edith uttered, covering her face with a hand and massaging her temple, thinking of what to do. Her maids have seen her like this, she couldn't allow any other to. She had managed to overcome the sun's radiance during the day, and she forgot about the moon's effect, too. It wouldn't be a problem if she was in Novara.

"Can I touch your hair, my lady?" Brianna asked, causing Edith to frown slightly.

"Brianna…!" Stella called in a reprimanding tone. They were all entranced but asking the lady to touch her? That was a bit too much, wasn't it?

Brianna stopped and pouted.

"It is fine. I just need to think of a way to stop this…" it then struck her. "Dariel…" but immediately she said his name, her mood became sour. She couldn't believe she would have to go to him and ask for help.

"But, my lady, it's not proper to touch you like that. She knows that," Audrey said while holding back her sister.

Edith sighed. She shouldn't be bothered by that too, did she?

Looking at Hildegard, she asked, "Where is Evans' bedchamber, Hilda? I would like to request his help."

The room went silent. They did not expect her to ask for Evans so late at night.

But since they were asked, they had to answer. "I can take you there, my lady, but I am not certain you will find him. He has been quite busy lately, and I have heard he rarely returns to his bedchambers. He is his Majesty's shield too, he need always be by his side."

Edith frowned when she heard that.

"Is this about the banquet?" Eduth asked. Banquet were a big deal, but it shouldn't rob one of their night's sleep.

"Yes, my lady," Hildegard replied, not sure if Edith didn't hear the rest, but she didn't dare to ask.

Edith nodded and went back into deep thoughts. After a moment of silence, she looked at her again. "Can you take me to his majesty? If I can't reach Evans on my own, he could be summoned."

"Yes, but is it all right to…" Edith smiled at her and gave a soft nod. "All right. We'll take you to his majesty."

They look relieved now for some reason. Did they prefer her going to Davion than Dariel? Edith asked herself. Although she had to agree that Davion was much easier to talk to. Not that she found it difficult communicating with Dariel. She just preferred Davion.

They arrived in front of Davion's bedroom, but they didn't do anything. Although they knew where the room was, no one other than Evans had been inside besides the king himself. He hated people's company, so they were all instructed to refrain from coming anywhere near the king's bedroom so everyone was told where it was do that they could avoid it.

Noticing the nervousness in them, Edith smiled and walked ahead before turning to face them. "Thank you for bringing me here. You may be excused for the night. I will return on my own once I am done here."

Although reluctant, they knew they couldn't go any further, so they nodded their heads.

 "Yes, my lady."

"Have a good night, my lady."

"You are so beautiful, my lady."

"What is it, Hilda?" Edith asked, noticing she was the only one left not relenting.

"There is nothing, my lady," she said and bowed her head. But Edith could tell she wasn't okay with leaving her.

"Good night, all of you," Edith said before turning around and taking her final steps towards Davion's door. She heard their steps retreating, and once the distance seemed far enough, she knocked.
