Chapter 44 - Elven Seer (Spoiler SS)

This is a SPOILER side story!

Please be careful entering this story unless you are open to learning a major piece to a chapter unwritten. (I was trying to grasp the complexities of the future by running the past.)

This story takes place just before Thomas is born to just after his birth.

It affects all chapters currently written (and will be for a long while yet).

This is based on one of his curses.

As for size of spoiler: probably limited. You're only getting hints and tips about that future and how those future characters will react.

Elven Seer

"Watching the future..." Leer stares at the ball in his den. As a royal elven seer, he hates having visions come upon him when we is busy. He grunts looking around. Of all times for a vision...

Vista was very interested in forming a partnership for the night. Only for the migraine of a sight to hit him. It may have been his worse one, too. Watching the sight though...

The one to kill all elves... Has formed. His birthdate is coming.

The future king of that weird human country to the west, Kulva.

His brother walks in wearing his kingly vestments. "Leer? What happened? Vista got me when you said..."

"Worse than expected, Lark." Leer taps his fingers on the arm of his chair. "I hope Vista is safe."

"Worried about you. Chatting with Artina." Lark settles next to me. He grips my hand. I'm glad the queen has some idea what is going on. Vista will be safe with her. Artina is literally the top mage we've ever seen. Watching her grow up... Leer knew something like this was going to happen sooner or later.

Leer wanted later. They're only a hundred. Lark doesn't even have a child borne yet. How does anyone handle this? "You know about Kulva, right?"

"The human settlement." Lark nods gripping my hand. "Can we not have a sight including them? Those always include trouble."

Leer closes his eyes. That's been the case. Ever since Kulva appeared... It's been downhill. Slowly they've been encroaching. The only hope was to keep a level distance. "The one to defeat us... Will be born in a few weeks."

Lark loses all color in his cheeks.

Leer look aside. What will happen to them? All the elves?

"What needs to change? You only have these visions when we're following the wrong path. So what needs to change? Leer." Lark shakes Leer while tears roll down his cheeks.

"I don't know yet. I'll need to ask."

"Only a few weeks... Do we kill the baby?"

"Humans are going to be protective of him." Leer shrinks. "I... I can't say our best option. But I think our best choice will be to become friends."

"How? They're..." Lark bows his head. "Clearly not weak if our civilization is meant to end."

"You know how sights are. Maybe it'll just..." Leer sinks. No. Everyone he cares about will end with the country's end. "We need to figure out the answer. I will do nothing else. Please send Vista away for now."

Lark stands up. "I'll trust in you. Please tell us what we need to do."

"I hope I know in short order."

-----

Leer steps up to the queen some time later. "Artina..." He whispers the plan. Lark shows up while the queen readies. An illusion spell to look human. No one will bother with her as long as she does not act the threat. Humans are cocky. She'll be the only one there.

"This will save us?"

"A chance. The prince will arrive with the willingness to talk. Second guess curses are commonly used on royals when things come too easily. They'll see it as us knowing some of the future. But the hard part will be you." Leer focuses on his brother. "You need to look upon the human with the awareness he deserves your time and attention." Lark bows his head. The chance is small, but possible. Everything will depend on Lark if he wishes to see the country survive the next king. But either way elves will continue even if the country doesn't. It is all Leer can offer.

Lord Odin yawns. Why did he even come? This is stupid. But the king wanted all the noble mages around. Odin rubs his eyes. He didn't bring a blessing. Didn't want to offer anything. Controlling destiny... "Stupid."

A woman mage walks in wearing a veil. Both physically and magically. She offers the sunflowers to welcome the new baby. Which flowers offered suggests what they wish to say to the royals. If she gave anything concerning, she'd be killed. Sunflowers, though...

Odin shrugs. Not his place. Weird people coming upon the blessing day is normal. A call for all who wish to bless the child. "They expect me to list everything and find counters." He sips of his glass. He'll be last one gone. People are still showing up even. This is why he hates being a Periwinkle. Being able to read magic... The king will use him. Always has before. Wish it was easier to say no.

"May I blessed the child?" The veiled woman glances to the royal pair a moment before being given the chance to gain touch of the child. Thomas squirms over it. "I wish to offer the Second Guessed Blessing." She closes her eyes and casts the spell on to the child. Odin gives it a quick review and find elven.

…. That's the illusion. This woman is an elf? What? Why are they here?

The woman continues, "When a child with this level of skill and power shows, most would just rally behind him even if he only creates trouble." She pauses looking about the room. Her eyes catch Odin. Huh? There's comfort in the catch though. Is this an ease spell? "Forcing others to second guess their future liege will teach him to show not just tell."

"To prove his place not be given it." The king rubs his chin. "I understand why such a blessing is desired." He takes up his wife's hand to grin. "With such a mother like this, there is little other possibility." The room enjoys the little kiss between them. Odin rolls his eyes.

"Welcome to the world, little Thomas." The veiled woman offers a curtsy before stepping away. She made her spell. Will definitely be the hardest to figure out a counter.

Probably the least likely one to remove though. It will lead the child to a better future.

The veiled woman steps up to Odin. It creates a shiver he can't deny. "You know of the illusion."

"I have no idea what you mean." Odin looks aside refusing the connection with the elf.

"If you ever have need for my assistance, please reach out to me." She places a sealed letter in his hand. "I can teach you much."

Odin reviews the elf before him. He cannot see past illusions – yet. "What's the cost for such a request?"

"Teaching you will teach him in the end." She smiles at the baby. "And then..." She waves it off. "Friendship is easier than enemies."

Odin nods. The woman walks off leaving the blessing space as is normal for those who gave as was expected. An elf... He flips the letter over. It'll be best to read it somewhere else. He slides it into his robes keeping knowledge hidden. "Friendship is easier than enemies." Odin watches the baby. An elf... Enemies... He stiffens... A second guessed blessing... "We have a dangerous crown prince." He sighs rubbing his face. "With such a queen and king as parents... And to be the blessed wedding night child... Was there another option?"

Odin chuckles watching as another places a typical blessing: Less Than Looks. Just a touch below average. "I'll need to figure out the cancel to illusion spells quickly, huh?" That would allow me to see the baby as he is.

The elf's words hit him again. 'To teach him'. Odin groans. "I'm gonna be stuck as mage trainer. Ugh. Make me not want to answer the elf's letter." He weighs things. There is a good chance the elf is attached to a seer. That's how they knew things. And if he is being given safety if he makes friends now... His life will be under risk as well.

"I just want to work my magic." That's the real reason Odin never turns the king down. It always leads to more knowledge. He can't turn down an elf offering the same. "Whatever. The future can't be changed. Destiny is called that for a reason."
