Chapter 10 - Chapter 10: Into the Darkness

The night swallowed Elian whole as he stood alone in the park, his heart thudding in his chest. Sophie's sudden disappearance left a trail of uncertainty, like a fog that refused to lift. Every part of him screamed to go after her, but the part of him that still didn't fully understand what she was involved in held him back. What if the danger she had hinted at was far beyond anything he could handle? What if she was right — what if getting involved with her was a mistake?

He stood there for what felt like hours, wrestling with his thoughts, until the cool night air finally nudged him into motion. His feet carried him aimlessly through the empty streets, but his mind was filled with Sophie — her words, her pain, the way she had looked at him like he was a lifeline and a liability all at once.

His phone buzzed in his pocket, pulling him from his spiraling thoughts. It was a text from Sophie.

"Elian, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to drag you into this. Please, stay away from me. It's not safe."

Elian's fingers trembled as he read the message. His mind raced with questions, with confusion, with a deep sense of helplessness. What was he supposed to do? Should he listen to her and leave her to whatever dark world she was involved in? Or should he push forward, risking everything to help her?

His decision came swiftly. He couldn't just let her go. Not like this.

Within minutes, Elian found himself standing at the front gates of the school, the lights of the city barely visible through the heavy mist. Sophie had run, but Elian knew she couldn't run forever. She needed help — and whether she wanted it or not, he was going to give it to her.

He texted Sophie back.

"I'm not leaving you. You don't have to do this alone."

Before he could send another message, his phone buzzed again. This time, it was a call. Elian hesitated, his finger hovering over the screen. He didn't recognize the number.

"Hello?" he answered, his voice tight.

"Elian." The voice on the other end was familiar, but it took him a moment to place it. It was Sophie's older brother, Alex. A chill ran through Elian as he realized the gravity of the situation. Alex was known for being involved in the same dangerous world Sophie was trying to protect him from. But why was he calling now?

"Elian," Alex repeated, his voice low and urgent. "You need to stay away from Sophie. You don't know what you're dealing with. If you care about her, you'll let her go."

Elian's heart slammed in his chest. "What's going on, Alex? What's she involved in? What aren't you telling me?"

Alex's voice softened, but the warning was clear. "This isn't a game, Elian. There are people watching her. They've been watching both of you. She's in over her head. You don't want to get involved in this. Trust me. You don't know what you're up against."

"Who's watching her?" Elian's voice was shaky, but his resolve was stronger than ever. "What's going to happen to her?"

Alex hesitated, the silence between them thick and suffocating. "I can't tell you everything. But know this — Sophie's life is at risk. And if you don't walk away now, you're going to put yourself in danger too."

Elian's mind spun. The weight of Alex's words hit him like a ton of bricks, but there was no turning back now. Sophie needed him, even if she couldn't see it. Even if she refused to acknowledge it.

"I'm not going anywhere, Alex," Elian said, his voice steady now, despite the whirlwind in his chest. "I care about her. I'll do whatever it takes to help her."

Alex's sigh on the other end of the line was heavy with defeat. "I warned you," he said, and then the line went dead.

Elian stared at his phone for a long moment, the truth settling in like an anchor in his stomach. He didn't fully understand the danger Sophie was in, or how deep the darkness ran. But he knew one thing for sure: he wasn't going to let her face it alone.

As he turned to leave the school gates, Elian's thoughts were interrupted by a loud crash from nearby. He whipped around, his instincts kicking in. His heart raced as he spotted a figure darting into the alleyway next to the school. It was Sophie. He had no doubt about it.

Without thinking, Elian bolted toward the alley, his footsteps echoing in the silence of the night. He reached the entrance of the alley just in time to see Sophie slip into the shadows. His breath came in ragged bursts as he followed her, calling out her name.

"Sophie! Wait!"

She stopped at the far end of the alley, her back to him. Elian's chest tightened as he closed the distance between them, his voice desperate.

"Sophie, please talk to me. You don't have to do this alone. I'm not going anywhere."

Sophie turned slowly, her face pale, her eyes red from the tears she had clearly been holding back. She looked at him for a long moment, her expression unreadable. Then, with a sudden movement, she collapsed into his arms, her sobs wracking her body.

"Elian," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I'm so scared. I don't know what to do anymore. I've been running for so long, and now… now they're coming for me."

Elian held her tightly, his own heart breaking at the sound of her pain. "I won't let anyone hurt you. I promise."

But deep down, Elian knew the road ahead was going to be far more dangerous than either of them had anticipated. Sophie's world wasn't just full of danger — it was a world of lies, betrayal, and forces far more powerful than they could ever imagine.

And as the night grew darker, Elian made a silent vow: no matter what it took, he would protect Sophie, even if it meant sacrificing everything.
