I push the door open wide.
There is.
Mom.
Lying still on the floor.
Lifeless.
My breath catches in my throat.
"Mom?" I whisper, almost too afraid to say it louder.
I drop to my knees beside her, panic rising like a wave.
"Mom, are you okay?" I shake her gently at first, then harder. "Mom, please, say something... what's wrong?" My voice is already breaking.
I look around the room, frantic.
"Mrs. May!" I call out, hoping to hear footsteps, an answer, anything.
Silence.
"Dad?" I scream louder now, almost desperate. Still, no response.
"Mom, please wake up." I whisper again as I look into her eyes—open, yet vacant.
Everything inside me starts to spiral. My thoughts are tangled. My body is trembling. My hands fumble as I grab my phone, trying to stay calm long enough to dial.
My fingers manage to hit the emergency number.
"Hello?" a voice picks up, but my own is barely steady.
