Zara woke to the low rumble of the night sky.
She jolted upright, gently stretching. To her relief, the ache had dulled.
Rubbing her eyes, she blinked them open and realized she'd been resting her head against the window in the back seat of her car.
Martin sat in the driver's seat. Their eyes met through the rearview mirror.
"We're here," he said—his voice flat, unreadable.
Zara swallowed and sat up straight, then stepped out of the car with Martin following behind.
Just as she expected, they were parked in front of Carter Realty.
"Thanks," she said, trying to be polite despite the awkward air.
Martin simply nodded, adjusting the face cap he now wore. After handing over the car key, he turned and walked off.
Zara leaned back into the car to grab her purse. She tapped the screen of her phone and gasped.
"11:43 PM?"
The last time she checked, it was just past 9 PM. They'd closed early today, and with the 30-minute drive, she should've arrived around 10 at the latest.
