Chapter 9 - Iron Threads

The sun had barely risen, but Nathan was already back on his feet. Every muscle in his body ached—no, screamed. He felt like he was dying.

"Can you even call this training? This is just torture!" I thought to myself.

Garrick had said he had to be at The Goliath by 9 AM. But he had only gotten home at 5. This is impossible. Now he understood what Jynn and Kaela meant.

No point in complaining. He had to start walking.

As I dragged myself to the gym, a pack of Velygrins appeared again. These were the same Velygrins yesterday.

"This has to be on purposeeeeeee" as I started full sprinting.

"I won't forget this!" I yelled.

I ran and ran until I was completely out of breath, I could see the gym. As I checked my book, it read 8:59.

"..."

With one last desperate burst of energy, he sprinted the final stretch and burst into the gym.

"You're late" Garrick said. "I didn't want to do this to you on the second day but rules are rules."

"The punishment to being late, is an hour of special training!"

His stomach dropped. "S-special?" "What could that possibly mean?" I'm really about to die." I thought.

"Well, you have to complete your training for today before your punishment. Today you'll be training your stance and power."

"My stance and power?"

Relief flooded him. No brutal endurance training today? No endless push-ups? Maybe today wouldn't be so bad.

Garrick pointed towards a hard stone dummy. "You'll be using that one, it's one of the easier ones but you have to break it with your fists at the end of the day."

Nathan immediately turned to run.

Garrick caught him by the collar and threw him back him back.

BEGIN!

"Hands up, Bend your knees! Punch! FULL FORCE!" He yelled repeatedly.

Over and over. Hours passed. Nathan's knuckles throbbed. His arms felt like noodles. His arms felt like breaking

At the end of the day I was able to break just one arm off the stone dummy.

"Well a start is a start. Then his grin widened. "Now, for your punishment, on your way home, carry this boulder home.

"Nathan flinched. "Please, no..."

This can't be real. How am I suppose to carry this boulder home when I'm already this exhausted?

Garrick handed the boulder to me.

"How is it?" Garrick said seeming proud of what he's done.

Nathan barely held back tears.

The boulder have to had weighed at least 20 pounds, he had to carry this for 5 miles? How was he going to make it back home?

Garrick laughed. "Don't worry, You can take all the time you need today. Tomorrow is a rest day."

Nathan perked up. "Rest day?"

"Yep, every week you get one day off to recover from your training!" Garrick assured.

"YESSSSSSS!!!" I yelled, "something good is happening to me!"

"Don't get too excited now, you still have to get home today!"

And so, Nathan began his grueling journey back—carrying a boulder, dead on his feet, wondering if he would even survive to see that rest day.
