Later in the day.....around 5:30pm Marco and his family gather about 100 yards away from the town. There was nothing but
the I'll grayish grass around them, definitely something the kids aren't used to due to them all growing up in the big city.
Everyone is just standing there as Marco and the butler Franklin set place the sheet covered box down on the grass, making sure everything is set. The kids just watch them prepare, that and also trying to get used to their strange scenery.
Juno has no opinions due to her being a full grown women she's already had her fair share in the countryside.
The children however cannot believe it. Roberto just sees a land that no longer truly has any purpose, and wonders if there is any meaning coming from living out here. Angelo is in awe, as if they had been transported into a polluted desolate land far from any five star restaurants.
Samantha is distant, knowing if you were up to no good out here you would be caught instantly due to it being such an open space of nothing.
Then Matteo seeing this as their backyard, but just 1000x times bigger.
*
Just in the town is the angry mayor looking out the window with his binoculars.
"Those damn Italians, they have no idea what we're going through. Typical rich family, just here to watch us suffer for your amusement. They think they're so smart getting ready to plant seeds I bet, as if we havent tried for years. They think because they're wealthy it will go just fine for them.
Tch! Arrogant fool, our earth has been dead for years there's nothing for you to do!"
He slams the binoculars on his kitchen table. He wonders if he was wrong to believe there were ever going to be someone to save them, and wonders why he's just now thinking this. For years all they ever had was themselves Noone else.
The mayor looks out the window for a split second for turning away and then quickly turning his head again with his eyes wide open now in surprise.
All of the townsfolk are making their way to the Owelis in a huge yet organized crowd.
He quickly takes his jacket from the hanger then makes his way outside sprinting down the creaky wooden stairs.
"I won't let those Oweli's make a beggar of my people, no way!"
On the 4th to last step there is a loud crash as his foot falls through the wooden staircase.
"Aaagghh! Sunova....."
*
100 yards away from the town Matteo begins to hear noises coming from behind them.
"Hey dad! Look, it's the townspeople."
Marco turns around in his surprise just 40 yards away he sees the entire town has come to see him.
"Haha, just in time. I've always knew how to lure a crowd."
Juno holds all four children together in front of her so they wouldn't get lost in it.
The gap between the townspeople and the Owlelis gets smaller and smaller until they finally come at a halt just 7 feet from where they stand.
A middle aged women wearing a scarf in her hair spoke in a ragged and dry voice-
"Why did you refuse us Mr. Oweli? Why don't you give us money to feed my children ?"
Another spoke further back in the crowd-
"All that money and you won't donate one cent to us, how cruel can you be?"
The children all have saddened expressions, but their parents were both carrying smiles.
Marco couldn't bare not to smile ear to ear for he has gotten everyone's attention way more effectively than he thought.
" All of you are farmers at heart, I understand that, I respect that.
I've always heard about your lands and was deeply saddened what the war has brought on you."
Cutting Marco off was the mayor emerging from the crowd pushing everyone aside. out of breath-
" you... *inhale then exhale* have no respect for us, you can't even give us a lone to get us back on out feet".
Marco shakes his head with both eyes closed.
" if I give you that loan. You people will abandon this land and it will only become a memory, my desire is to resurrect Angels Rest".
The townsfolk all start muttering in confusion and whispers, the mayor returns with an outrage-
"Our earth is dead! What part of that don't you understand? There's no fancy machinery you can pull out of your mustache that can change that. Machines are the reason our land is tainted in the first place. The oil from those war tanks that OUR government built to protect us were nothing but giant poison moving amongst us. When they spilled It took only a month later that everything we planted all of our crops to be dead within a 50 mile radius. Damn you and your gadgets Italian, I want you out of here now!"
Everyone goes quiet... until the sudden sound of Marco laughing gradually becomes louder and then he stops abruptly...
"Some say I'm a miracle worker... and they'd be right, I am. Ladies and gentleman I present to you.... the Everglider!"
The butler whips off the white sheet from the large silver box. It's simply a silver box from what it appears like... That and the iconic Oweli owl family crest big labeled in front of it.
Everyone looks at it with awe, for how shiny the box is Everyone thinks he's just giving them a gift made of silver to send.
They all think that until suddenly without warning the machine makes a sound of electricity moving all around the inside of it so loud that it begins to sing the sound of lighting. The machine shoots up into the sky with the speed of a bullet. Into the evening sky the Everglider makes a slow halt just below the clouds.
The mayor cannot believe what he's seeing, the crowd is gasping and murmuring.
"What the?"
The Everglider the opens the shafts under it and releases multiple wires of light like Christmas tree lights.
It sprouts all the way down 10 feet low now having the box resemble a Giant metal octopus.
Marco is observing making sure everything goes entirely well with the machine. He whispers to himself-
"Now " .
The glider coast in a steady speed over the crowd and around the land with its wired flowing behind it with the air.
Something similar as a snowflake makes its appearance to the ground and then dissappear, and then another, and another.
Angelo gets down on his knees to look at the tiny particles touch the grass and then disperse. Suddenly something changed. The air around them started to smell fresher and it became easier to breath.
A townspeople in the crowd not visible shouted " what's going on?"
Marco gladly answered " this is the power of the Oweli family, while many abandoned these lands and ignored your calls, I was at home spending day and night, countless hours for years to create this awesome machine. A machine to deprive your lungs of dread and clear your skies, only I could have done it !"
The Oweli spoke high and fierce.
The crowd shouted his name so loud It startled the children for a little bit. Angelo has never seen anything like it before, praise being directed to his father for building this genius machine. This wasn't the kind of praise he'd get from making a drawing with the entire family in it or completing the puzzle your mother gave you for your birthday, but a praise flooded with something Angelo was very well unfamiliar with.
Angelo turns to his brother Roberto huddled beside him-
"These people love him alot, don't they?
Roberto turns to Angelo-
"Love would be an understatement, they worship him".
"Worship?" Angelo says with his eyes wide wondering what this strange word means.
"Like grandma at home with those stories about the angels, she worships them".
Angelo turns front to the townspeople again as they reach out their hands looking up to the glider in frenzy and shouting.
"They... worship papa for making them a machine".
Samantha looks at the crowd in disgust-
"Momma are we even safe to be here?
They look like they will tear us apart".
Roberto is indifferent, his father would always tell them stories about most of his trips going like this, the absolute excitement he would get from the crowd after exhibiting his work.
"This is part of being an Oweli".
Matteo in the other hand agrees with sister Samantha but not out of disgust but with worry, he turns to his mother-
"Maybe we should back up a bit ma, they do look like they could tear us limb from limb if we're not careful".
Juno snaps out of it-
"O-oh your right... Franklin!"
She waves her hand to get the butler attention. When he finally notices her he adjusts the brim of his hat and walks over to the children to then escort them all back to the limousine.
Everyone leaves except Angelo who doesn't want to lose his view of the crowd excitement. He pushed the butlers hand away without even looking at him, completely fixated on his father of which then begins to speak-
"You all thought that was great, now... watch your feet!"
Everyone looks down and to their surprise they all all begin to scream.
"The grass.... their green again".
Everyone was so focused on the glider that they completely missed the grass reverting back to its original state years ago.
The mayor in absolute panic stares down Marco with a grin on his face." You absolute madman!"
The ingenious machine dances in the air taking its 100th lap of the land.
With no doubt about it Marco is an absolute genius, he managed to create a machine that sprouts residue that reverses the affects of the toxic oil into organism similar to bone meal that's powerful enough to not only clear away the toxins but exhilarated the growth of whatever organism its located near. Who else could've done it?
If that isn't brilliance then that'll mean these people are merely overreacting.
*
Later.... the sky has become darker as the sun begins to set and yet there is still endless screams for Marco and his wonderful machine.
Though it was impossible to get the entire land back to life, it still managed to get the radius of the town and miles outward.
After all this machine is only a prototype, it will take a few more years to perfect it to survey entire fields. Only then the machine will be mass produced in the Oweli foundation and shipped all around the world.
The mayor sent the owelis off with the gentleman's salute.
"I will treasure this day for as long as I live".
Marco gave him a nod and then proceeded his way to the limousine, on his way he put a hand on Angelo's head leading him.
They both walk and then Angelo speaks-
"Father, do you think I can make cool inventions like you?"
They both stop walking and Marco turns his head down to face Angelo who now says-
"I want people to praise me like how they do to you".
Marco pauses and then speaks-
"Your an Oweli aren't you?.... it's our family gift Angelo, it's coursing through your veins like how its coursing through mine and your siblings too. We can accomplish anything". Marco says these words with his brightest smile.
Those very words sparked something in Angelo that would never die down. He even got a bit teary eyed.
Marco pats Angelo on the head and they head to the limousine eventually arriving home.
