After ten o'clock in the evening, David arrived at the Room of Requirement as scheduled. Peter had already prepared more than ten pieces of parchment for him, filled with notes from the day's research.
Over the past two days, Peter had focused on Transfiguration and Alchemy. Now, his writings covered spells and potions, with today's notes detailing the principle and application of the Fiendfyre Curse.
At this pace, David mused, Peter's brain would probably be drained dry by tomorrow.
After requesting a practice room, David stepped inside.
The chamber had several large targets designed for testing spells. Besides that, there was only a simple table and chair in the rest area.
Settling into the chair, David began reading Peter's notes on the Fiendfyre Curse.
The Fiendfyre Curse
According to Peter's records, casting Fiendfyre didn't require an incantation. Instead, it demanded an exact magical route and a release of destructive emotions.
The key to success lay in embracing the desire to destroy—a deep craving to reduce everything to ashes. Only by fully surrendering to this emotion could one summon Fiendfyre.
However, therein lay the danger. The curse was notoriously difficult to control. Too little emotion, and the spell wouldn't activate. Too much, and the fire could spiral out of control, burning the caster along with everything else.
David put the parchment down, considering the implications.
For most wizards, this was a significant limitation. But for him? It wasn't a problem at all.
His talent, Heart of Darkness, enhanced his affinity for Dark Magic and allowed him to cast it without relying on emotions. This meant he could use Fiendfyre at will, without needing to conjure a destructive mindset.
Additionally, his Flame Affinity granted him natural control over fire magic, making his mastery of the spell virtually guaranteed.
Still, David decided to use emotional assistance for his first attempt—just to understand the spell's feel. Once he grasped it, he could eliminate that step.
The First Attempt
David closed his eyes, recalling the magical route Peter had described. He focused on the emotions needed—destruction, chaos, and ruin.
His grip on his wand tightened.
A spark ignited at the tip.
A single crimson flame flickered into existence, pulsating with a sinister, almost living energy. It expanded rapidly, feeding on his raw magic rather than any physical fuel.
Soon, the flames engulfed the room. Targets, chairs, and tables crumbled into a sea of fire.
David raised his wand, manipulating the blaze. The fire twisted and coiled, forming a whirling inferno that revolved around him.
If he could see his magical proficiency panel right now, he would have noticed something astonishing—his Fiendfyre proficiency had already jumped to level three within moments.
His various talents—Dark Magic mastery, exceptional spellcasting, heightened intelligence, and Heart of Fire—made his learning speed terrifyingly fast.
Perfecting Control
As the flames grew stronger, instead of losing control, David found the opposite happening—his grip over the fire strengthened.
He stopped pouring magic into the flames. Normally, this should have let the fire run wild. Yet, astonishingly, David could still command it freely.
His confidence surged.
With a flick of his wand, the fire split apart. The flames shaped themselves into a phoenix and a dragon, both composed entirely of Fiendfyre.
David grinned.
Was this considered magical transfiguration?
He pondered for a moment before shaking his head.
No. True transfiguration involved altering the essence of something. This wasn't a real phoenix or dragon—just Fiendfyre taking on their form. The creatures had no intelligence, no abilities beyond burning everything in their path.
Still, it was incredible to see.
Mjolnir's Wrath
Suddenly, a thunderous boom shook the chamber.
A colossal hammer of lightning, nearly ten meters wide, came crashing down from above.
BOOM!
The fire phoenix shattered into thousands of burning embers. But instead of dying out, the embers scattered across the floor, quickly reforming into a giant wolf of flames that ran along the room's perimeter.
David's eyes sparkled with excitement.
Even against powerful magic attacks, Fiendfyre couldn't be extinguished. It simply reformed, fueled by his magic.
This explained why conventional counter-spells couldn't put out Fiendfyre.
David speculated that the legendary spell, End of All Curses, could counter Fiendfyre because it functioned by nullifying magic itself, breaking it down at its core.
He had already mastered Stop of Curses, the lesser version of this spell, which canceled or resisted incoming spells. End of All Curses was simply its stronger form.
For now, however, that was irrelevant.
His control over Fiendfyre was progressing rapidly.
A Dangerous Experiment
David slowly walked toward the raging Fiendfyre dragon. His instincts told him he wouldn't be harmed.
He hesitated for a second. Then, trusting his gut, he extended his hand into the flames.
The heat was intense, but it didn't burn him.
His wizard robes remained intact.
David smirked.
What kind of fool would allow themselves to be hurt by their own magic?
He had fully synchronized with Fiendfyre.
The Final Challenge
Now came the real test.
Could he dismiss Fiendfyre at will?
David focused.
Nothing happened.
His brow furrowed. The fire still burned, refusing to dissipate. Since it still had magic sustaining it, it wouldn't vanish on command.
He sighed.
Perhaps when he fully mastered Fiendfyre, he would be able to disperse it freely.
For now, the only solution was to let the fire consume most of its energy.
Luckily, this test had been confined to the Room of Requirement. If he had cast this spell outdoors, where flammable materials were abundant, he might have caused an unstoppable inferno.
After watching the flames dwindle for a while, David finally stepped out of the chamber.
Before leaving, he checked his magic panel.
Fiendfyre had already reached level six.
This was, by far, the fastest spell he had ever upgraded.
Author's Note:
David's rapid mastery of Fiendfyre highlights how his talents work together to accelerate his growth. Unlike ordinary wizards, who struggle with this spell's dangerous and chaotic nature, he can already manipulate it with ease.
The next challenge? Finding a way to dismiss it at will.
