Chapter 52: A Huge Step Forward
Two days later, Western Tower inside the Potter Manor.
"Now that I've been able to remove all the debris and junk from the room, I have to admit that it's a lot more spacious than I initially predicted,"
James said with satisfaction while staring at the fruits of his labor.
The tower he had fixed had a total of three usable floors, with a spiral staircase that went around the insides of the structure.
All rooms were circular in shape, with the one at the top being slightly bigger than the rest as the tower widens there. This was a lot more space than what he had at Hogwarts and way more than his magical briefcase.
'Unfortunately, I will only be able to use this for serious projects during the summers.' Since he wouldn't spend that much time at home, his usage of this tower was going to be limited, but he was still happy to have it.
It reminded him a bit of his old home and brought a sense of nostalgia.
"I can't believe you actually restored the tower in such a short amount of time…" His mother, Euphemia, was at his side, staring at the completely fixed and clean tower. "I have never seen you work so hard in your entire life…"
She could not recall the last time her son was so enthusiastic about something that wasn't Quidditch-related.
"Your father needs to see this, or he won't believe it when I tell him."
"That's fine. I won't be able to make use of it yet." He had set up all of his brewing utensils inside his briefcase as well as the lab at school. James was going to need to make a large order of new tools to fill this place properly.
"Are you really going to use this tower to make potions?" Euphemia felt a bit conflicted with her son's idea. For one, she was very happy that he finally showed passion for something that could offer him a bright future, but on the other hand, brewing potions could be dangerous, and he would be doing them here, alone.
She had spoken about this with her husband, but he responded that if James is actually capable of brewing Veritaserum, then they had little to worry about in that regard, as it is one of the most complex potions out there.
"Yes, I am going to turn this into a nice laboratory." James never tried to hide his intentions from the very beginning.
He hated lies and having to hide who he truly was from others, so he had decided that he was going to be himself and could only hope that his family and friends would continue to accept him for who he was.
"Very well…just promise me that you will be careful with this," Euphemia told him.

On the afternoon of that same day, James was in his bedroom. He had no more obligations for the day, so he thought this would be a good time to check on his other experiments.
He carefully set up his magical briefcase on the floor of his room and opened it up before venturing inside.
The smell of ingredients being processed immediately hit him as he entered.
James then opened the room to his right, where his two current alchemy experiments were being carried out.
The table on the right contained a large crystal container filled with a deep green liquid. On occasion, something seemed to be moving inside. A tiny turquoise flame was burning beneath it, but the liquid didn't seem to be boiling or even emitting any sort of smoke.
James got closer and observed everything carefully, even performing some tests with his wand.
He had previously removed the Trace on it, so he wouldn't get in trouble with the Ministry of Magic even if he made use of it.
After a few minutes of this, he took a step back away from the vial.
"It's still going to need a few more months. Hopefully, I can provide it with enough pixie dust and unicorn horn. I'm running low on those ingredients…"
His potion business was going very well, but some of the materials he required for his alchemy projects were quite expensive, so the money was going out almost as fast as it came in.
With one thing done, he turned his focus to the other project.
There were over a dozen glass flasks filled with liquids of different colors on the table, all connected by glass tubes, and at the center of them all was a pitch-black cauldron made of a special type of stone.
The surface of the cauldron was covered in runes, and a magical circle had been drawn around it.
"Mmm…" James noted how faint the color of the liquids inside the flasks had become and that the flame underneath the cauldron had gone out.
He walked to one of the drawers nearby and pulled out a pair of thick dragonhide gloves before returning in front of the black cauldron.
James then reached for the lid and very carefully pulled it off. His amber eyes stared at the contents with great interest.
Inside the cauldron was a luminous, ethereal substance, like liquid light or pure energy.
It swirled around, moving like a vortex of energy.
A smile appeared on James's face. "I did it! I've created it once more, and inside a magical briefcase with basic tools at that." He could not help but give himself a pat on the back.
Any Alchemy Master would go crazy if they knew what he had recreated inside this small portable laboratory.
"Prima Materia…the source of all matter in existence," James muttered.
This was going to be the base for his next large project…recreating the Philosopher's Stone.
