Chapter 136 - The Trap Is Set

Zi Ning stood on the balcony of her penthouse, the cool night breeze brushing against her skin. The city lights stretched before her like a sea of stars, but her mind was far from peaceful. The public backlash against Wang Yin had been swift and satisfying, but she knew this battle wasn't over. Her enemies wouldn't stop until they destroyed her—or until she destroyed them.

Behind her, Lu Yichen leaned against the glass door, his sharp eyes watching her carefully. He knew Zi Ning was the type of woman who didn't back down. But even a woman as strong as her carried burdens no one else could see.

"You're thinking too much," he said, stepping closer.

Zi Ning tilted her head slightly. "I can't afford not to," she replied. "We exposed Wang Yin, but someone else is still pulling the strings."

Lu Yichen's lips curved into a cold smile. "They'll make a mistake. And when they do, I'll crush them."

His words were simple, but there was a deadly promise hidden within them. He had already begun tightening his net around the shadow lurking behind the scenes. Whoever dared to hurt Zi Ning would soon regret it.

Zi Ning turned to face him, her expression softer. "I'm lucky to have you by my side."

Lu Yichen reached out, his fingers brushing against her cheek. "And I'm not going anywhere."

The next day, Zi Ning returned to Zi Corporation. The atmosphere inside the building was tense. Though the scandal had shifted in her favor, there were still those who doubted her ability to lead. But Zi Ning wasn't here to ask for approval—she was here to take control.

As she stepped into the executive conference room, all the board members stood. Chairman Liu, as usual, sat at the far end of the table, his face blank but his eyes calculating.

"President Zi," he greeted her with false politeness. "We've all seen the latest reports. While it's clear you were targeted unfairly, our shareholders still need reassurance. What is your plan moving forward?"

Zi Ning placed her leather briefcase on the table and opened it. "I anticipated this," she said coolly, pulling out a stack of documents. "These are the details of a new international partnership. If we secure this deal, our profits will increase by thirty percent within six months."

The board members exchanged surprised glances. Even Chairman Liu's mask of indifference cracked.

"This deal…" One of the directors adjusted his glasses. "Isn't this with the European Feng Group? They've never collaborated with any Chinese company before."

Zi Ning's smile was calm and confident. "They made an exception for us."

The room fell silent. Everyone understood the weight of what she had achieved. No matter how much the media tried to destroy her, Zi Ning remained one step ahead.

"If anyone still doubts my ability to lead," she added, her voice turning colder, "you're welcome to leave."

No one moved. No one dared to.

Chairman Liu finally spoke, his tone smoother. "Of course, we trust your leadership. This deal is impressive, President Zi."

Zi Ning met his gaze, her expression unreadable. She knew his praise was empty. But for now, she had silenced his doubts.

The meeting concluded with unanimous approval for the new partnership. Zi Ning left the room knowing one thing—she had won this round, but the real enemy was still hiding.

Meanwhile, Wang Yin had vanished from the public eye. After the evidence against her was exposed, she had no choice but to retreat. Her social status was in ruins, and many of her so-called friends had abandoned her. But Wang Yin wasn't the type to accept defeat.

In a private villa outside the city, she paced back and forth, her nails digging into her palms. "I won't let her win," she hissed.

A soft chuckle echoed from the shadows. "Still holding onto your pride?"

Wang Yin's head snapped up. A tall, elegant woman stepped forward. She wore a sleek black dress, her features sharp and cold. This was Mo Qing, one of the most dangerous players in the city's underworld—and someone who had her own reasons for wanting Zi Ning destroyed.

"What do you want?" Wang Yin demanded.

Mo Qing smiled faintly. "We share a common enemy. And I have a plan to bring her down for good."

Wang Yin's eyes narrowed. "Why should I trust you?"

"Because," Mo Qing said, stepping closer, "I never lose."

Her confidence was chilling, but Wang Yin's desperation left her with no choice. "What's your plan?"

Mo Qing's smile widened. "Simple. We'll strike her where it hurts most."

At the same time, Zi Ning and Lu Yichen were working behind the scenes.

In Lu Yichen's private office, several screens displayed financial records and surveillance feeds. Chen Xiang, his loyal assistant, stood nearby.

"We've been monitoring Wang Yin's contacts," Chen Xiang reported. "She's gone underground, but she recently met with Mo Qing."

Lu Yichen's expression darkened. "Mo Qing?"

Chen Xiang nodded. "She controls several illegal businesses and has deep connections in the underworld. If she's involved, this won't be a simple attack."

Zi Ning frowned slightly. "What does she want with me?"

"Power," Lu Yichen answered coldly. "Mo Qing doesn't care about personal grudges. If she's moving against you, it means someone promised her something bigger."

Zi Ning's fingers curled into a fist. "Let them come," she said quietly. "I'm ready."

Lu Yichen's gaze softened as he reached for her hand. "You don't have to fight alone," he reminded her. "I'll be by your side every step of the way."

Their hands intertwined, a silent promise between them.

A few days later, Zi Ning received an unexpected invitation.

A luxury gala was being hosted by the Cheng family—one of the most powerful families in the city. Rumors swirled that major business deals would be discussed behind closed doors, and attendance was by invitation only.

It was the perfect place for her enemies to strike.

"We should be careful," Lu Yichen warned as he helped her into a sleek black gown the night of the gala. "If Mo Qing is involved, this won't be a simple evening."

Zi Ning's smile was calm but cold. "Let them try," she murmured. "I'm not afraid."

Hand in hand, they arrived at the grand ballroom. Crystal chandeliers sparkled overhead, and the city's elite mingled beneath them. But Zi Ning's sharp eyes scanned the room, searching for hidden threats.

Mo Qing was already there, her figure elegant and composed. When their gazes met, Mo Qing raised a glass in a mocking salute.

Beside her, Wang Yin smiled—a smile filled with venom.

The trap was set.
