The office was quiet too quiet. The hum of the AC, the clicking of distant keyboards, the soft muffled footsteps of paralegals... it all grated on Mara's nerves.
She slammed the folder shut.

She bit her lip hard enough to sting. Her eyes stung worse.
She had no idea why she was so surprised. Ethan had always been like this. A master of apologies, a poet when it came to promises. But lies? Lies rolled off his tongue like honey.
She should've known.
Six months. Just six more months and the divorce would be finalized. Six months and she'd no longer have to answer to him. No more tie to him. No more pretending she wasn't wondering where he was or who he was with.
But none of that made it hurt any less.

The voice pulled her out of her spiral. Steve, leaned against the door frame of her office, brow furrowed with concern, he knew she wasn't and he already heard about the win.
