The reason her family initially moved here wasn't just because of the death of her maternal grandparents, but also—and perhaps most importantly—because of a serious injury her father sustained while fighting dissidents.
Her father had been a knight, but even with the salary provided by the kingdom, they had struggled to make ends meet in the capital. When he was injured, he was immediately put "on leave"—a sort of forced retirement. While he continued to receive a stipend, it was significantly less, as he had retired relatively young. Unfortunately, her grandparents passed away shortly afterward, and they had to organize their funerals. Initially, the move was meant to be temporary, just for this purpose, but they eventually decided to stay indefinitely.
However, they had accumulated significant debts in the capital, and their creditors began to demand repayment—often violently.
