Nighttime, back at Mystic Falls.
Kol broke away from Klaus's continued ranting and raving, and Elijah's growing concern for their missing sister Rebekah, with the former denying he even cared, blaming her for their escape, saying if she was caught, it was on her for going off on her own.
It was around midnight when he sent Bonnie a text telling her he was coming over.
He was walking down the pathway to her front door when he stopped.
"I know you're there, come out while I'm still feeling generous," said Kol, sensing their hidden forms.
He heard hushed arguing and someone saying, "It doesn't matter, stick to the plan."
Aiming their crossbows, Alaric came around the left corner with Matt and Jeremy around the right, all firing simultaneously.
"Really now, what do you expect to do with that?" asked Kol, grinning. Thinking nothing of it as he caught the one going for his heart, letting the other two hit him in the chest. His expression instantly changed as something didn't feel quite right; it hurt more than it was supposed to.
Looking at the wooden bolt in his hand, Kol's eyes widened, "White Oak!"
Hearing another come up from behind, Kol quickly spun around catching Stefan's hand, who appeared in a blur trying to stake him along with Caroline who helped push him back until he tripped against the porch stairs, landing on his back with a groan as Stefan fell on top of the two bolts, pushing them further in while attempting to drive the stake into his heart.
Kicking Caroline away, he gave Stefan his complete focus, forcing the stake back.
"Caroline, I need you!" shouted Stefan as Kol started to win the struggle, despite being weakened by the other bolts inside him.
"I'm on it!" cried Caroline, taking out a stake and speeding back. The other three put down their crossbows and took out three more stakes, rushing to the downed Original.
Disturbed by all the noise, Bonnie woke to find her friends trying to kill her new teacher.
Bursting through the door, she magically flings them all off him and strips them of their weapons, including the two bolts still in his chest. Burning them all.
"Bonnie!" cried Caroline, shocked.
"Do you have any idea what you just did?" asked a bewildered Alaric, seeing their one weapon against the Originals turn to ash.
"We almost had him! Why are you protecting him?!" cried Elena irritatingly after leaving the safety of her hiding spot to confront her, standing next to an equally startled and confused Matt and Jeremy.
"You give yourself too much credit. I was this close to slaughtering you all. If anything, she saved your miserable lives," Kol scoffed, feeling immensely embarrassed and angry, barely holding himself back from making good on his word, in light of staying in Bonnie's good graces. That was twice now he's been humiliated; there wouldn't be a third.
Caroline snorted, "Whatever dude, we had you and you know it."
Clenching his fist, Kol took a tentative step forward only to stop seeing Bonnie carefully watching him before she addressed the crowd, "To answer your question, Elena, he's been helping me learn magic, and I would like to keep learning."
"But you know what he is, he needs to die," argued Elena.
Kol frowned, "That's a bit harsh. What did I do to you to deserve such hostility?"
"Did you forget what your family's done to mine? And you probably have Damon locked away somewhere, torturing him," Elena spat.
Kol grinned at the thought, and as he was about to retort, Bonnie spoke up in his defense, "You shouldn't blame him for what others have done, family or not, and like I said, he was teaching me magic. He wouldn't have had time to play with Damon, and he hasn't done anything to us, unlike that asshole you suddenly like for some unexplainable reason."
"Did you forget what he did to Matt?" asked Elena, frustratingly.
Bonnie snorted, "You keep telling me how he needs to die, but are insistent about hanging out with vampires of your own, and do you really think a broken hand is worse than a dead sister?"
"What are you talking about?" asked Matt, with Jeremy equally interested, believing she left town due to Stefan's compulsion.
"Did no one tell you?" asked Bonnie, brows furrowed, glancing over at Elena, who had the decency to look ashamed along with Caroline.
"We compelled them to think she left town," answered Stefan remorsefully.
"Tell me what's going on!" yelled Matt.
"I'm sorry to have to tell you this, but your sister's dead," said Stefan, coming clean, "Damon turned her, and she couldn't handle it."
Matt glared at them, his teeth and fists clenched, eyes misting over, unsure what to say or do.
"And you compelled us to forget?" asked Jeremy, equally devastated next to him.
Stefan nodded.
"Don't give Damon all the credit Stefan, Elena told me what happened next," said Bonnie ruthlessly.
"Bonnie, don't," Elena croaked.
Stefan frowned, "She couldn't handle it, so I did what needed to be done."
"You Bastard!" shouted Jeremy, "You had no right to decide that! Why did Caroline get to live and not her?"
"You don't understand Jeremy, she was attacking me, he did what he had to," Elena haphazardly explained.
"Bullshit, you could of snapped her neck. I doubt blondie here was in any more control than this sister of yours," said Kol menacingly, enjoying the drama.
"Nobody asked you!" shouted Elena.
"They didn't have to," Kol quipped with a wicked grin.
"No, let him speak," said Matt angrily. "On second thought, I'm done here," he said, throwing his crossbow down and storming off, followed by Jeremy.
"Jeremy! Jeremy!" cried Elena.
"Give them time," said Stefan, squeezing her shoulder comfortingly.
Alaric didn't know what to make of everything he heard as he stood silently by, along with Caroline, who felt bad that Vicki didn't get the same chance she did.
"Are we done here?" asked Bonnie as she prepared a spell to deal with the neighbors who might have woken up.
"Not quite," said Kol, "Tell me, do you have any more white oak stashed away?"
Elena stiffened as Stefan swiftly answered, "No, the bridge sign could only make so much; we brought it all knowing we would only get one shot."
Kol grinned, "For some odd reason, I don't believe you. How about I ask the doppelganger?"
Stefan and Caroline stood defensively in front of her.
"That's enough Kol," said Bonnie.
"Hm, I don't think it is. A quick compulsion and I'll know everything I need," said Kol, continuing.
"Kol!" Bonnie warned.
Kol reluctantly relents when he sees Bonnie sending a glare that promises a world of pain if he doesn't stop. He takes one last look at Elena and turns to Bonnie, "Have it your way darling," and walks past her into the house, shocking the others.
"You invited him in?" asked Elena, perturbed.
"I'm not going to repeat myself," said Bonnie, doing a quick chant that removed the possibility of nosy neighbors bothering them.
"What was that?" asked Caroline.
"A spell to deal with the neighbors, now it's time for you to leave unless you want Kol coming back out here, and need I remind you, you no longer have any weapon that can stop him from tearing you limb from limb," said Bonnie.
"And you'd let him?" asked Elena, heartbroken.
Bonnie rolled her eyes. "Did I not just stop him? I think we're done here."
The least you could do after everything is search for Damon," said Elena, still determined to get her way.
Bonnie was ready to deny her, but decided it wouldn't be worth the hassle. "Fine, I assume you have something of his I can use?" she asked, looking between her and Stefan.
"I do," said Stefan, having come prepared for such a possibility, handing over a flask.
Bonnie sighed, "Why am I not surprised? Wait here."
"They still here?" asked Kol, grabbing a drink.
"I'm dealing with it," said Bonnie, finding her globe and maps.
She cast the spell and frowned, casting a few more times before delivering the bad news.
Walking out onto her front porch, Bonnie tossed Stefan the flask and said, "I'm afraid I can't find him. Either he's under protection or... not."
"No, it can't be, you must be lying to protect that bastard!" shouted Elena nastily.
"Elena!" gasped Caroline, "Stop it, I'm sure she did everything she could."
Bonnie frowned, feeling a bit hurt, thinking about how close they used to be. "We're done here," she said, heading in and shutting the door, no longer caring about them.
She found Kol sitting on the couch, looking exhausted.
"Why didn't you let me compel her?" asked Kol, having heard the whole thing.
"Because I despise that power, it's just plain wrong," said Bonnie.
After a moment, he spoke again, "You shouldn't have burnt them all."
"The white oak? Would that have worked? Can it actually kill you?" asked Bonnie, intrigued.
Kol's eyebrows raised, "You didn't know?"
Bonnie's lips tightened. "We haven't exactly been speaking to one another lately. I was mostly relying on how everyone was reacting."
"To answer your question, yes, it can kill an Original, and it's a shame you didn't save one," said Kol.
"Sorry for saving your life," said Bonnie despondently.
"We could have used one to kill Klaus," Kol continued like a broken record.
"Well, you shouldn't kill your brother, no matter how evil he is. Besides, we have a plan, so let's stick to it," said Bonnie.
"Perhaps you're right. Wouldn't want to become like Klaus," said Kol, thinking of how he killed their father. "Also, wouldn't want to have gone through all the trouble of getting this and not using it," said Kol, taking out the dagger with a grin.
"You got it!" exclaimed Bonnie excitedly, sitting next to him to take a closer look.
"Yep, now all we have to do is teach you Kemiya," said Kol, equally excited.
"I've been wondering, who created these daggers?" asked Bonnie.
"It took me a while to figure it out, but it had to be the powerful witch coven who helped Klaus put Mother to sleep. He later angered them, as he does, so they used the knowledge they had about us to create the daggers and put us down," said Kol.
"Then what happened?" asked Bonnie, eager to hear more.
"Then, they died, their unfortunate mistake of not knowing Klaus was a hybrid was their downfall as he was sure to gloat over their corpses," said Kol.
"But if they were that strong, how could he kill them?" asked Bonnie.
"Ah, but you see, they weren't ready for him, plus he wasn't alone; he did wake us. Thinking they had won, there was no reason to think we would start picking them off from the shadows one by one with our superior speed and strength. By the time they could figure it out, it was already over," said Kol.
"And I'm sure you know it's a bit harder to magically deal with an Original than say your average vampire," said Kol.
"Yeah, I've noticed. Why is it so much harder to affect you guys? Even regular vampires take more than any human would," asked Bonnie.
"Same reason it's hard to magically affect another witch," said Kol patiently.
"But vampires don't have magic to fight back with like a witch," said Bonnie.
"No, but they are made of magic; their very essence is magic. When you use magic against a vampire, you're fighting the spell that keeps them what they are," said Kol.
"Oh, makes sense, I guess," said Bonnie.
"Here, take the dagger and get some shut-eye. We'll start again fresh tomorrow when you're well rested," said Kol, handing the dagger over.
"Goodnight Kol," said Bonnie.
"Sweet dreams luv," said Kol.
Away from Bonnie, his mind was still filled with revenge, having taken one too many losses of late. Recalling something Klaus mentioned, he found an unassuming bloke leaving a bar and intercepted him.
"Hey, watch it," said the guy fumbling with his keys.
Kol pushed him against the brick wall, meeting his eyes, "Keep silent and follow me."
Leading him to the Salvatore estate, he commanded him to, "Grab some rocks and start tossing them at the door. Feel free to yell insults or anything to get him to come out."
Kol then patiently waited in the shadows of the night for Stefan to step out.
He didn't have to wait long as Stefan came to investigate the disturbance.
"Get out here you yellow belly sack of shit, I ain't got all day, you no good dog licking motherfucker!" shouted the man.
Stefan opened the door with a frown, dodging the next rock and catching another. "Who are you, and what do you want?"
"The fuck you think I want asshole, come and get it, I'll show you how a real man fights, you cowardly fuck!" spat the man, throwing another rock.
Stefan sighed and sped over, only to be intercepted by Kol, who slammed his back into a tree. "Fancy meeting you here."
Stefan's eyes widened, "Kol."
"The one and only," Kol said, and would have given a bow if he weren't busy keeping him pinned.
"Bonnie won't like this," said Stefan, thinking quickly.
"Yeah, I've noticed how everyone seems to have forgotten what you are for the most part. Your whole woe is me sucking on animals really gets to them, so I thought why not remind them who you really are, even if they're quick to forget," said Kol, turning to the man, "Get over here."
The man complies.
"What are you doing?" asked Stefan nervously.
Kol grinned, "I've heard tales of your past, and I find myself curious. How bad could it be?"
"Don't do this," Stefan pleaded.
Kol sneered, "You have no one to blame for this but yourself. You should have fled like your craven brother when you failed to kill me."
"I won't drink," Stefan said resolutely as the man offered his neck.
"I know I can't compel you and don't have the time to sit around bleeding you out, but I have a feeling you'll drink all on your own, or I'll find your favorite Doppelganger and snap her pretty little neck," Kol threatened.
"Klaus would never let you," said Stefan, unfazed.
Kol smirked, "Haven't you heard, Klaus seems to have misplaced all his daggers. There isn't anything stopping me now."
Stefan hesitated before giving in. Opening his mouth, his vampire face showed as he slowly lowered it onto the waiting man's neck.
Releasing him, Kol grinned as Stefan took hold and greedily drank. "That's it. Drink well, killer. I have high hopes for you."
"Damn you do have issues," said Kol as Stefan began chewing into the neck seeking more blood.
Job done; Kol left him there. "See you later, ripper," he said, speeding away.
