Chapter 1 - Chapter 1: Lighborn

Snow is coming down heavily… I can't breathe. How did it end up like this? I was being chased wasn't I? Who was chasing me, I am hurt badly… I have a wound in my abdomen. I lost my balance and now my knees are in the snow, it's coming down really hard, I can't see anything. I can no longer move, it's so cold… I can't see anything. My vision is fading, slowly… My face is in the snow now, I feel how cold it is now and how hard it's coming down. Are they still chasing me? No, I ran out here. I did this to myself. I can now rest, peacefully.

My eyes open and I am laying in a bed, birds chirp outside and I hear music. the sheets of the bed over my body. Slowly coming back to reality I would have to think about what happened.I would finally speak, my throat somewhat dry, "Where am I? What is this?" I would sit up in my bed still comfy, it would be a small sized room with a moderate layout, a bed in the center against the wall, a nightstand to my right with a window not far from the nightstand, and a desk and chair pressed against the wall with the door next to it. I would start by checking myself, I would look at my hands, they are yellow? Then my clothes, I would be fully clothed in attire similar to a young boy, "I don't even know what I look like, who dressed me?" The thought would come to me, who am I? I would slowly get out of bed adjusting to what I can do with my body, I can move my arms, legs, and talk. I would notice a mirror above the desk, "At least they gave me a mirror." I would walk up to the mirror and I was confused at what I was looking at in the mirror. A brown comb over, a slim face, brown eyes, a tunic with a vest, basic boots, and most of all, I had yellow skin. I had never seen myself before, it was honestly a shocker to look at myself in the mirror! "How interesting, I wonder how unique I am to have this color to my skin." I would hear the music just beyond the door, stretching a tiny bit in hesitation to go outside. "I don't know if anybody is hostile but I don't wanna sit here lying in wait." I would open the door to a hallway, I would realize about 3 rooms are on each side of the hallway. At the end of one hallway is a small room with boxes and a chair and the other side of the hallway leads to a seating area with rails surrounding a square like area to a bigger room. "The music is coming from that area." I would take my first steps outside the room and make my way towards the lobby like area before me. I would walk into the larger room which would be on a second floor, tables and chairs sit against the wall with people drinking at a few of them, I would look down the balcony like rails below and see more tables below me along with a bar stool where you can order drinks, the music is loud now and seems to be coming from a man who can play the bard and instrument I somewhat was familiar with, I am slightly confused how I can remember all that. I spotted stairs in the corner of the place and would make my way towards them. I haven't spoken to anybody yet… How strange, I would receive a few dirty looks from the patrons but I would continue on. I would go down the stairs into the main part of this establishment and find myself in some sort of cafe, people drinking at the large tables and a bard playing near a stool, a fireplace sits near the bard's stool, and the bartender cleans a glass. I guess to get any information on where I am I would have to speak to the bartender. I would approach the bartender who would look up from his glass to stare at me, cold and old eyes of an elderly man. The feeling would overwhelm me that he has seen it all, even a man with no memories like me.

"Don't even start, boy, sit down, take a drink, I will explain it all to you."

The boy would hesitate, wanting to speak, the old man's words would overcome his own and he would just sit down.

"What to drink, mead? Or would a bit of ale calm your nerves?"

The boy would hesitate but speak, "Ale will be fine."

The old man would pour the drink and hand it off to the boy who would look down at it for a moment and shake the cup before deciding to take a sip of it.

"To start off, you're a haselden, like me. You're the most common race in Gaia, that is the land we live in."

The boy would think to himself, 'I am the most common race here, I wouldn't realize until now that everyone also had yellow skin.'

"Your race overcomes difficult obstacles easily, the closer to death you are the stronger you become. Although most likely you will never get close to death."

The boy would now look up from his drink to acknowledge the man's words and respond, "Why am I here?"

"That's a simple boy, those who die are reborn here with a new life."

The boy would be slightly shocked and look at the man, "So you're saying I died, and I woke up here? I have no knowledge of anything and I am expected to live with that?"

The old man would put both hands on the table and look at the boy with a stern look, "There is nothing you can do but survive, my boy. Whatever you did in your past life doesn't really matter, you're in a new life and you have a choice to live or die. You can choose to kill yourself and curse the next child who wakes up here."

The boy would be visibly shocked and angry, "What is there to do in this world? Do I get a job, do I fight monsters?"

The old man would reach under his narrow table and retrieve a book.

The boy would look at the book, "Is that a possible way to join a guild party? Is there maybe even magic?"

The old man would sigh and close his eyes, "Boy, I am going to give you a name like I do most that come to life here. If you don't like your name, suck it up."

The boy would lose all hope he had in the idea he was going to be an adventurer

The old man would flip through the book deciding on a page, "Your name will be… Will. If you choose to join a house you will attach the house name after your name and when you write it down there will be a space in between your name the house's name."

Will would nod his head slightly confused.

"Do you need anything repeated? You will be leaving the inn now and you will be set off into the world."

Will would stand up from his stool at the table and look to the man one last time, "Thanks, old man." Will would find the main door leading to the outside and leave the inn. It would take a moment for Will's eyes to adjust to the bright sun right above the inn. A sign next to the door of the inn would read, 'Wayside Inn' "I can seem to read the language just fine, it seems that I was at least born with that knowledge." The inn is surprisingly big with a hallway connecting two buildings that acts as an overhead to a gate that is just ahead. "It's probably not wise to head to the mysterious gate." The other way isn't much different having hills surrounding the inn and a hill blocking any potential threats. "Not much of a choice I suppose." I would walk down the dirty path leaving the inn. Getting past the large hill, I would see a small ocean before me. Just across the ocean would seem to be some sort of tan building built into a wall that looks narrow. Looking right I would see a bridge, so that is how I get to the tan place. I would for the first time use my energy to run. I would stop before the bridge, on both sides is water with one side being some sort of ocean while the other leads to a dark area. The bridge seems to be the only way to the tan building.

I would take my first step onto the tan bridge, it's almost like sand, now that I think about it. Beyond this area looks to be almost like a dust cloud.
