Adeline felt Miss Dawn was trying to humiliate her, but she didn't have any proof, so she could only bite the bullet and say,
"Because of my ex-boyfriend and my gambling father."
Miss Dawn might have already known all the news, and was maybe just confirming with her.
Aurora nodded,
"I know it. But what I am curious about is, why are you paying off your ex-boyfriend's and father's debts? Did they threaten you?"
Adeline chuckled bitterly,
"Miss Dawn, you might not know this, but when a person in a family takes debt, all the other family members suffer.
Those debt collectors go to my sister's school and harass her. They also went to the hospital and made a scene. The hospital almost kicked us out."
"They even came to the small restaurant where I work and yelled in front of all the customers," Adeline continued, her voice trembling.
"I was so embarrassed... My boss almost fired me."
She looked down and clenched her fists.
