I had no words. Just pain. Shame.
"You didn't think, even for one second, that something was wrong? That maybe this guy was a red flag from the beginning?"
He shook his head slowly and then chuckled bitterly.
"You're dumber than I expected," he said flatly.
I didn't even try to defend myself. Everything he said was true. And the more I thought about it, the more I hated myself too.
Still, I muttered, "He's the dumb one. For scamming me. For tricking me into trusting him."
Declan spun around and glared at me.
"No, Beatrice. No. The only dumb person in this whole thing is you."
I flinched, but he didn't stop.
"That man—whatever the hell his name was—isn't the dumb one. You told me it's Dave, right?"
I nodded.
"Well, Dave isn't dumb. He's a fucking scammer. A professional. He knew what he was doing."
"You're the dumb one, Beatrice. Because you let him do it."
