It had been a week since Wendy joined the guild. Honestly, I'd have preferred if we were in the same guild as before, but this guild change had been so sudden. I couldn't really complain, though. It was either that or me kidnapping Wendy every weekend while she slept for romantic dates. But first, I needed to take a trip into the past to figure out what that lightning strike was that hit the village on the day there was a black hole in the sky—and also the world I landed in before arriving in Magnolia.
Everything was still a blur in my head. That's why I was currently in the guild's library, lying on a table with three books in front of me. I was so deep in thought that I didn't notice Mirajane approach.
Mirajane (placing a plate of chili dogs on the table): You've been doing a lot of research lately. Is everything okay?
Me (grabbing the chili dog before she even set the plate down): Yeah, it's just something I want to understand. Have you ever heard of lightning strikes that cause memory loss?
Mira: No, but I think Laxus might know something about that.
Me: Yeah, but ever since he was banished from the guild, he disappeared. I can't feel his magical energy anymore.
Mira: Oh, really? That's a shame. By the way, did you know Wendy went on her first mission alone?
Me: Oh, that's cool. WAIT, WHAT?!
I clung to her at that moment, my face now level with hers.
Me: Since when?!
Mira (smiling): Oh, you didn't know? She left with Freed and Happy barely an hour ago. She was supposed to help a theater director with a stage production.
Me: Oh, nothing special then. I'll check on her later.
Mira (still smiling, with a dark aura around her): Okay, but can you stop groping my chest now?
Me (with a nosebleed): Oh, yes, yes, sorry! (I quickly let go and sat back down.)
Mira (laughing): Honestly, I wonder if Wendy's chest will be spared when she's fully grown.
Me: Of course not. You know me well.
Mira: Oh, we all know Sonic the Hedgehog, the panty thief, Sonic the shower peeper, and Sonic the breast groper.
I was so shocked by each title she gave me that I turned pale.
Wendy's POV
I was so excited! I was going on my first mission alone! Well, not entirely alone, since the master insisted I be accompanied by someone, so I was going with Freed and Happy. Carla didn't want to come with me; she was against the idea of me going on a mission by myself. Sonic was in the library doing research. Lately, since we arrived, he had been really focused on books, trying to understand the origin of the lightning strike that had hit us before. It was a shame; I'd have loved for the three of us to go on a mission together.
We had to go to a city in the west to help a theater director with his performance. We left the guild under the cheers of the girls in the guild. Carla was still upset, but I was determined to prove her wrong. We arrived at the train station, but there were no trains available.
Happy: Oh no, how are we going to get there now?
Freed: We could go through the forest, but it'll take a day.
Wendy: Yes, let's go!
Happy: Are you sure, Wendy?
Wendy: Don't worry, Happy. At least we'll get there.
As we walked through the forest, we saw flying fish in the sky. They were actual fish with wings. I found it really strange—fish are supposed to live in water, not the air.
Freed: Ah, I think we've found dinner for tonight. I'll create an enchantment to make them fall when they cross this line.
He started drawing violet symbols on the ground with his sword. As the fish passed the line, they fell and flopped around as if they'd just come out of the water.
Happy: Yum, fish!
Happy was already salivating at the sight of the fish, but then raindrops started falling.
Freed: We should find shelter.
We ran for a bit and found an empty cave where we lit a fire and grilled the fish. Happy ate them raw.
The next day, we were in a desert. It was starting to get really hot, but luckily there was no sandstorm. We began to see the city, but a tornado was heading toward us.
Happy: Whoa, a sandstorm?!
Freed: Wendy, stay back. I'll slice it.
Freed slashed at it, but his attack had no effect. The tornado grew stronger, but I had an idea. I'd use my new offensive technique. I took a deep breath and then...
Me: Sky Dragon Roar!
My roar calmed the tornado, which dissipated.
Freed: Congratulations, Wendy.
Happy: Great job, Wendy!
After that, we arrived at the city at sunset. There was quite a crowd in front of the theater. The director introduced himself to us.
??? Good evening! You must be the mages I hired. My name is Rabian, and I'm the theater director.
Me (bowing): Thank you for welcoming us. We are Wizards from Fairy Tail.
Rabian: I believe you're a little late. As you can see, business is going well now, so I don't think I need your help anymore. But don't worry—you'll still be compensated for your travel expenses.
??? WHAT?!
Turning around, I saw Erza, Lucy, Gray, and Carla. It seemed they had followed us.
Me: Guys, what are you doing here?
Lucy: We wanted to follow you from a distance to see how things would go, but it seems we did all this for nothing.
Erza: I left my belongings in quicksand for this.
At that moment, they all collapsed from exhaustion. Nearby, I saw Natsu arriving, but he didn't look well.
Natsu: Finally! After waiting for the train to work again, I managed to take it and get here.
He collapsed as well. Freed and Happy started feeling unwell, holding their stomachs.
Freed (clutching his mouth): Oh no! I think I have indigestion from all those flying fish we ate.
They both collapsed. Was it really because of the flying fish? I had eaten them too.
Rabian: Oh dear! This won't look good for our image. Can you get rid of them for us? I'll pay you a handsome amount of money.
[A few minutes later]
Finally, I managed to carry everyone and set them down by the fountain. I was exhausted and sat by the fountain's edge.
Sonic (patting my hair): You did well today, didn't you?
Me: Yeah, but it wasn't the mission we had planned.
Sonic: True, but at least your journey here was an adventure.
Me: Yeah, you're probably right, Sonic... WAIT, SONIC?!
I hadn't noticed he was already here.
Sonic: I used a portal ring. I heard the others were following you, so I waited, but then I got bored and decided to see how things were going.
Ah, that made sense now.
Sonic: Alright, shall we head back?
He threw a ring that opened a portal leading to the guild.
Me (taking his hand): Yes.
