Lyla's smile faltered slightly at the mention of Noah, but she didn't say anything.
Evelyn sat beside her on the bed. "You've been strong, Lyla. I know... none of this has been easy."
"I feel like I'm living someone else's life," Lyla admitted. "Everything around me feels familiar, but I don't remember feeling them. It's frustrating."
"You're doing better than you think," Evelyn said softly, brushing a strand of hair behind Lyla's ear. "And no matter what pieces are missing right now, the ones who love you are still here. We're not going anywhere."
There was silence for a moment.
"Can I ask something?" Lyla said. "I promise I won't force anyone for answers, but... was I happy?"
Evelyn paused, her eyes glistening. "You were brave. And kind. And yes, I believe you were very happy. You've always made others around you happy too."
Lyla blinked back the sting in her eyes and nodded. "That's enough for now."
