I flopped face first on my bed, wrestling with the thoughts that swirled in my mind. The events of the previous day played like a movie, the image of Megan's guarded expression burned into my memory. She was so beautiful, cold and untouchable, but I sensed something vulnerable under all her mean girl persona.
I rolled out of bed, the cool wooden floor sending a shiver up my spine, and made my way to the kitchen where the cooks were already preparing dinner. The smell of roast beef filled the air, but my appetite was nonexistent.
My mother was right there with the cook, she loved to help in the kitchen. I thought about telling her what was going on, but she looked tired and I didn't want to bother her with my teenage drama. I knew she would listen, and probably have good advice.
"Good evening," she said, glancing up from the stove. Her hair was tousled, and there were dark circles under her eyes. "You look like something is troubling you."
