Chapter 120 - Volatile children

The Volatile Queen loomed in the shadows, her grotesque form shifting like a monstrous riddle. Her skin seemed to writhe with every movement, a deep, sickly purple hue that pulsated with an eerie glow. And the smell—god, the smell—it was suffocating, an overwhelming blend of methane and decay, like something buried deep in the earth was suddenly unearthed and now walked among them.

He gripped his curved longsword tighter, his knuckles turning white as he steadied his breath. They'd been fighting for what felt like hours, and yet the Volatile Queen didn't tire, her movements as swift and unpredictable as the shifting tides of a storm.

"Xin! Raven! Stay focused!" Belial shouted,

Xin, who had been cautiously advancing with his spear, whipped his head around at the sound of Belial's voice. His eyes were wide, sweat trickling down his forehead. He wasn't ready—not yet, not fully trained in the art of using a spear with the precision needed for this fight. But he had no choice now but to step up.

"I—I'm trying!" Xin's words were strained, a flicker of panic threading through his tone. His grip on the spear was unsteady, but it was the only weapon he had. His attempts to thrust and strike the Queen had been sluggish, the spear too long for his form, the blade too unwieldy for his nervousness. Each failed strike only made his fear grow.

Meanwhile, Raven was already in the thick of the fight, her gauntlets clashing against the Queen's fleshy armor-like skin with brutal force. She was tireless, relentless—each strike reverberated through her body, every punch sending ripples through the air. Her armored gauntlets, designed for close combat, were a perfect match for the Queen's monstrous form. She threw herself into the fray, aiming for the Queen's legs, trying to topple the beast with raw strength.

But the Volatile Queen was faster than they had anticipated. She shifted her massive frame with an unsettling grace, ducking under Raven's blows, sidestepping Xin's hesitant thrusts, and twisting her form to land blows on Belial that he could barely avoid.

"Focus on her pattern," Belial gritted out through clenched teeth, ducking as one of the Queen's massive arms swung toward him like a battering ram.

The Queen's movements seemed predictable at first, but the moment he tried to anticipate her next strike, she changed course, catching him off guard once again.

The Queen moved in a pattern Belial remembered, a dance of death he'd seen before in other creatures of chaos. But at the same time, there was something off about it—something unpredictable. The strikes came too fast, too varied. He couldn't move fast enough to dodge everything, couldn't predict the way she would shift her weight, her limbs, her body.

A heavy blow to his side sent Belial sprawling, his sword clattering across the stone floor. His chest burned with pain, and the taste of blood flooded his mouth, but he pushed himself up, gritting his teeth. The fight was far from over, and they couldn't afford to slow down now.

"Xin!" Belial shouted again, trying to regain his footing. "Don't hesitate!" He could see the uncertainty in Xin's eyes as the young warrior faltered, the spear heavy in his hands.

"I'm trying!" Xin gasped, his voice laced with frustration. His spear was clumsy in his grasp, and with each failed attack, his confidence seemed to crumble. He had to learn, to adapt—fast.

Raven's voice cut through the chaos. "We need to end this now, before it kills us all!" Her gauntlets clanged as she delivered a brutal punch to the Queen's side, but the creature barely flinched, and the sound of it echoed through the chamber like a death knell.

The Queen's movements were growing erratic now, more frantic. Was it anger? Was it desperation? It didn't matter. The creature was clearly near its breaking point, and they had to find a way to exploit that weakness.

The Volatile Queen's bloated body quivered. The ground trembled beneath them, and the rancid smell of decay grew stronger, suffocating their senses. She reared back, her body twisting and contorting in unnatural ways, preparing for another deadly assault.

"Watch out!" Raven shouted as the Queen lunged toward them with terrifying speed, her limbs elongating like tendrils, coming straight for Xin.

But just as the Queen's claws were about to pierce his chest, Xin reacted. In a desperate bid to save himself, he stabbed the spear forward. The shaft connected with the creature's chest, and for a brief moment, time seemed to stand still. The spear lodged deep into the Queen's flesh with a sickening thud, and the creature screamed in agony.

The Queen jerked violently, but the spear remained lodged in her chest, its length quivering with the force of her convulsions. Blood—black and tar-like—began to pour from the wound, soaking the ground around them.

Raven took the opportunity. "Now!" she screamed, charging in and landing a crushing blow to the Queen's head. The impact sounded like a cracked bell, echoing through the hollow chamber.

But just when they thought victory was in their grasp, the Volatile Queen let out one last, terrifying roar, shaking the very walls around them.

And then, the ground beneath them rumbled violently, as if the earth itself was rebelling against the destruction they had wrought. Something shifted behind them—a presence, something ancient and ominous.

Raven turned, her eyes wide with sudden fear. "Belial—Xin—something's wrong!"

Before Belial could react, before he could understand what was happening, a shadow loomed in the distance, and from the darkness, something moved—something far bigger, far more menacing than the Queen. It was coming for them. A massive form, cloaked in shadow, with a presence so overwhelming that it sucked the air from their lungs.

The Volatile Queen was not alone.

The shadow surged forward, its form coalescing into something tangible—a towering figure with jagged, obsidian-like skin that seemed to absorb the dim light of the arena. Its eyes burned like molten lava, and its movements were slow but deliberate, each step causing the ground to crack and splinter beneath its weight. The air grew heavier, the stench of decay now mingling with the acrid tang of sulfur.

Belial scrambled to his feet, his sword back in his hand, though his arms trembled with exhaustion. "Fall back!" he barked, his voice hoarse but commanding. "Regroup! Now!"

Raven didn't need to be told twice. She leapt away from the Queen's convulsing body, her gauntlets raised defensively as she retreated to Belial's side. Xin, however, hesitated, his spear still lodged in the Queen's chest. He tugged at it desperately, but it was stuck fast.

"Xin, leave it!" Belial shouted, but it was too late.

The shadowed behemoth was upon them, its massive arm swinging in a wide arc. Xin barely had time to dive to the side, the force of the swing sending him tumbling across the stone floor. The spear snapped in two, the shaft splintering as the Queen's body was flung aside like a ragdoll.

"We can't fight this thing head-on!" Raven yelled, her voice strained. She glanced at Belial, her eyes searching for a plan, but he was already moving.

"Flank it!" Belial ordered, his mind racing. "Raven, take the left! Xin, with me!"

Xin, still disoriented from the fall, staggered to his feet. He clutched the broken shaft of his spear, his face pale but determined. "I—I'll try," he stammered, though his voice lacked conviction.

The behemoth roared, a sound so deep it vibrated through their bones. It swung again, this time aiming for Raven. She ducked under the blow, her gauntlets slamming into its arm with a metallic clang. The impact barely fazed the creature, but it gave her enough time to roll away.

Belial charged forward, his sword gleaming as he aimed for the behemoth's leg. He struck with precision, the blade cutting deep into the creature's obsidian flesh. Black ichor oozed from the wound, but the behemoth didn't falter. Instead, it brought its massive foot down, forcing Belial to leap back to avoid being crushed.

"It's not enough!" Xin cried, his voice cracking. He hurled the broken spear shaft at the creature, but it bounced harmlessly off its thick hide.

"We need to find a weak spot!" Raven shouted, her fists raised as she circled the behemoth. "Eyes, joints—anything!"

Belial's mind raced. The creature was too large, too powerful to take down with brute force alone. He scanned its body, searching for any sign of vulnerability. Then he saw it—a faint glow emanating from the center of its chest, a pulsating core that seemed to thrum with energy.

"There!" Belial pointed. "Aim for its chest!"

Raven nodded, her eyes narrowing as she focused on the target. She darted forward, her movements swift and precise, but the behemoth was ready. It swung its arm, catching her mid-air and sending her crashing into the wall. She groaned, her body slumping to the ground.

"Raven!" Xin screamed, his voice filled with panic. He started toward her, but Belial grabbed his arm.

"Stay focused!" Belial snapped. "We can't help her if we're dead!"

Xin hesitated, his eyes darting between Raven and the behemoth. Then, with a deep breath, he nodded. "What do we do?"

Belial tightened his grip on his sword. "We hit it together. On my mark."

They charged as one, Belial leading the way with Xin close behind. The behemoth swung again, but Belial ducked under the blow, his sword slicing upward toward the glowing core. Xin followed suit, using the broken spear shaft to jab at the creature's side.

For a moment, it seemed like they might succeed. Belial's blade struck true, sinking into the core with a sickening squelch. The behemoth roared in pain, its movements faltering.

But then, with a sudden burst of energy, it retaliated. Its massive hand slammed into Belial, sending him flying across the arena. Xin barely had time to react before the creature grabbed him, lifting him off the ground with ease.

"No!" Raven's voice rang out, weak but defiant. She struggled to her feet, her gauntlets glowing with a faint, ethereal light. With a cry, she launched herself at the behemoth, her fists slamming into its arm with enough force to make it release Xin.

The creature staggered, its grip loosening as Xin fell to the ground. But it wasn't enough. The behemoth recovered quickly, its glowing core now flickering erratically. It raised its arm, preparing to deliver a final, crushing blow.

Belial, battered and bleeding, forced himself to stand. He knew they were out of time. With a roar of defiance, he charged one last time, his sword aimed straight for the creature's core.

The blade struck true, piercing the glowing heart of the behemoth. For a moment, everything seemed to stop. Then, with a deafening explosion, the creature erupted in a burst of light and shadow, its body disintegrating into nothingness.

The arena fell silent, the only sound the ragged breathing of the three warriors. Belial collapsed to his knees, his sword slipping from his grasp. Raven limped over to Xin, helping him to his feet.
