Maya sighed softly, looking down at her empty plate. Lucas couldn't tell if it was disappointment or something else entirely, but her reaction made his chest tighten. His father, on the other hand, let out a hearty laugh, clapping a hand on Lucas's shoulder.
"Well, I suppose I can't stop you from being the responsible," his father said. "But how are you planning to get to the station? It's such an early train."
Before Lucas could respond, Maya chimed in, her voice softer than usual. "I can take him."
Lucas blinked, surprised by her offer. His father raised an eyebrow, clearly amused. "You? Driving Lucas to the station at the crack of dawn? Are you sure, Maya? I thought you weren't much of a morning person."
Maya offered a small smile, brushing a strand of hair behind her ear. "It's no trouble. Besides, you just got back from the hospital. You should rest."
