Chapter 126 - Chapter 126 ↦ Just Bad Luck

At 10 o'clock, as Kakeru questioned his life choices, Tomonari announced the exam results.

"First, last place!" He announced from the front with a megaphone.

The homeroom teachers from the other three classes were present.

Sae stood with her right arm held by her left — her usual dignified and serious demeanor.

Chie, aware that her Class B students had suffered greatly, wasn't clinging to Sae as she had on the ship. Instead, she maintained her professional teacher composure.

Kakeru stood alone representing Class C, while his teacher Kazuma stood at the front.

Kazuma had his eyes closed — a silent indication that the results must be terrible.

Sure enough.

"Last place — Class C, 0 points." Tomonari announced.

Kakeru, mirroring his homeroom teacher, closed his eyes.

Despite his unwillingness to accept defeat and obsession with victory, he had ended up with zero points.

"Third place…" Tomonari continued, "Class B: 300 points."

For the island exam, 300 Class Points was impressive.

Even Nagumo Miyabi had only achieved 302 Class Points in this event previously, while Manabu Horikita's class had earned 400 points.

Honami's Class B had performed admirably.

Upon hearing their score, Class B's students — Honami included — collectively sighed with relief.

Kakeru remained silent. Learning of his zero-point result, he knew the situation had spiraled beyond his control.

He didn't want to know if Class B's 300 points came from his incorrect leader guess, or if Class C guessing his leader identity had resulted in the -50 and +50 points canceling out.

"Then second place, Class A: 471 points." Tomonari announced.

This score, exceeding the previous benchmark of 400 points, reassured Class A.

The composed Kōhei clasped his left hand.

Since President Manabu had only achieved 400 points in this exam, this year's Class A had maintained — or even improved — their position.

Houtarou observed from the front.

The score exceeded his expectations by one point — earned when Class A's leader Yahiko swiped his card yesterday. They had not only secured the 50-point reward but also retained the base point from card swiping.

These small point differences seemed insignificant compared to the hundreds of points at stake in determining the next Student Council President.

"And now for first place..." Tomonari said.

All eyes turned to the six Class D students: two male and four female.

Teruhiko Yukimura, Kiyotaka Ayanokōji.

Suzune Horikita, Kikyō Kushida, Mei-Yu Wang, Airi Sakura.

"First place, Class D, with 650 points! Congratulations!" Tomonari announced.

When this score was announced, Class D's students appeared somewhat dazed.

But quickly...

"Yay!" Kikyō and her close friend Mei-Yu softly clapped.

Kikyō tried to share the joy with Suzune, but the latter maintained a stern face, completely ignoring her.

Kikyō: "..."

She could only maintain her smile and turn away.

Though the scene was awkward, it hardly mattered — this score would make everyone envious. With the exam's conclusion, the four Classes' Evaluation Points changed:

「Class A: 1801 Points」 「Class B: 970 Points」 「Class C: 490 Points」 「Class D: 730 Points」

The implications were clear.

"Does this mean after this exam, our class will become Class C?" Airi asked, adjusting her decorative non-prescription glasses.

The school's class rankings were fluid — whichever class had higher Class Points would move up in rank. With Class D's 730 points now exceeding Class C's 490 points, a promotion was inevitable.

Moving up in class rank was normal, and yet...

"..."

Though Airi's voice was soft, all eyes quickly turned to Class C.

Class C's teacher Kazuma had kept his eyes closed since learning of his class's zero points, but now he felt the other teachers' gazes upon him.

In the school's history, Class D had only moved up to Class A once before — under Sae Chabashira.

Now Kazuma Sakagami's class had made history in its own way.

What a disgrace!

As for Kakeru—

"I reject these exam results!" He thrust his hand into the air.

"The exam results are completely fair." Tomonari replied officially, "We will only tell you the results and rules. You need to think about the process that led to these results yourselves. This is what we want to guide you toward."

The reason for their zero points was simple: they had guessed Class D's leader wrong.

Yet the other three classes had all gained points — especially Class D with their 650 points. This could only mean one thing: all classes had correctly identified him as the leader.

This was a complete and utter defeat for Kakeru Ryūen.

And then—

"Ichinose!" He stormed over to Class B's group.

"You bastard, Ryūen!"

Class B students were furious at his appearance.

"I want to know how my identity as leader was exposed?" Kakeru demanded, ignoring Sō, Ryūji, and the others.

Despite going to such lengths to hide his identity, all three classes had seen through him and guessed correctly.

Had all his careful concealment been pointless?

This was completely unacceptable.

"Ichinose, what happened after Ibuki obtained your class's leader identity—" He demanded.

"You..."

Class B students bristled at his use of spies.

Honami raised her hand gently, calming her classmates' tempers.

She began recounting the events of yesterday afternoon, just before the exam's end.

On June 20th, day five of the island exam, Satoru — who had been taken in by Class B — complained of a stomach ache and returned to the ship.

His departure made everyone feel guilty, leading them to be even more considerate toward Mio, their other guest from Class C.

Then on June 21st, the sixth day of the exam at noon, everything changed.

Chihiro, Class B's leader, went to take a shower, leaving her leader card in her tracksuit pocket.

When she emerged, she discovered Mio rifling through her pockets. Mio had already found the leader card and photographed it with a concealed camera.

Chihiro stood frozen in shock.

Mio fled with the camera containing evidence of the leader card.

It took Chihiro several minutes to process what had happened.

Through tears, she reported the incident to Honami.

The truth dawned on Class B's students: sheltering Class C students had been a grave mistake. They had been thoroughly deceived.

Mio Ibuki, whom they had taken in, was actually a spy tasked with uncovering their leader's identity. Satoru's convenient departure the previous day had likely been planned to lower their guard, setting up Mio's opportunity.

The exam had suddenly become far more precarious. Class C now knew their leader's identity.

With only one base on the island, they could earn at most 17 Reward Points — points that would certainly be nullified.

They faced an immediate 50-point deduction when Class C identified their leader during the guessing phase.

But the situation could worsen: if Class C sold this information to other classes, allowing them to also identify Class B's leader, the consequences would be dire.

The total loss could reach 167 points (17 + 50 × 3).

This stung particularly hard after their perfect 100-point achievement in last month's written exam — all that effort now threatened by an instant 167-point loss.

The gap between them and Class A would only widen.

Chihiro, their chosen leader, blamed herself entirely: "If I hadn't been so careless — if I'd kept the card with me..." She wept continuously while her classmates tried to console her.

On their first day on the island, they wandered endlessly searching for usable Basespots. Everyone walked an average of 23,000 steps — leaving not just their feet, but their entire bodies aching with exhaustion.

Then, after Class D's Rokusuke swiped the basespot Kakeru had left — their campsite — they were forced to relocate in the middle of the night.

In retrospect, Class B hadn't caught a single break during this island exam — they'd faced nothing but misfortune and setbacks.
