The sheer jealousy in his words—and the dramatic way he said them—made Laurent want to laugh.
She had been trying to stay serious, knowing she was in the wrong for being home so late. But the way he said "the world out there is exciting"...
She couldn't help but follow up,
"But it's also kind of exhausting, don't you think?"
These work dinners and get-togethers weren't exactly her choice. She didn't enjoy them, but she had to go—it was part of the job. What else could she do?
"Don't try to joke your way out of this," Dave snapped, his face still hard.
"You're a woman with a child. With a man. And you think it's appropriate to be out there hugging other guys?"
"You think it's fine to be singing in a bar till midnight?"
"Most families have the woman setting a curfew for the man. Are you telling me I need to start giving you a curfew now?!"
Laurent realized maybe she shouldn't have tried to joke around. That only made things worse. Now he was really laying into her.
