Chapter 53 - Chapter 52: Drum Kingdom (I)

Luffy, Usopp, Vivi, Sanji, Oliver, and the sick Nami were the ones heading to the village, while Zoro and Karoo stayed behind to watch over the Going Merry.

Luffy offered to carry Nami despite Sanji's objections, and in the end, he agreed.

They finally left the ship while watching several creatures along the way.

"GYAHHH!! A bear!! Play dead!" shouted Usopp as he threw himself into the snow.

"That's a hiking bear. It's not dangerous," said the leader of the group. "Just don't forget to bow to show your respect."

They continued walking until they reached the village, where they saw a lot of strange animals — something that Luffy and Usopp thought was awesome.

As they walked through the village, they greeted the man, and that's when they learned his name.

'Dalton... I had forgotten this guy's name. Was it because he didn't seem that important?'

Dalton led them to his house so Nami could rest.

"She has a 42-degree fever?!" said Dalton, shocked.

"Her fever has been rising steadily for the past three days," Vivi told Dalton.

"If it keeps rising, she'll die," said Dalton.

"We know, but we don't know what's causing it, or how to treat it," said Vivi.

"Who cares?! All we need is a doctor! Where is that witch?!" Sanji asked frantically.

"The witch? Do you see the mountains through the window?" Dalton asked them.

While they talked, Luffy and Usopp were outside playing in the snow and had to be scolded to come back inside.

"Those mountains are the Drum Rockies. Do you see the castle on the tallest mountain? That's a kingless castle," said Dalton.

"What's the deal with that castle?" Vivi asked.

"The only doctor in this entire country — the one people call the Witch, Doctor Kureha — lives there," Dalton told them.

"WHAT?!" everyone shouted.

"Great. She's in the farthest possible place. Alright then, just call her down!" said Sanji.

"Even if we wanted to, there's no way to contact her," said Dalton.

"WHAT?! And she calls herself a doctor?!" Sanji shouted angrily.

"There's no doubt she's skilled, but that woman is very strange… she's nearly 140 years old," Dalton told them.

"140 years old?! And she's still alive?!" Sanji asked.

"Well… yeah… she really likes raisins," said Dalton.

"Sanji, remember we're in the Grand Line. We might even meet someone who's almost 1,000 years old," Oliver said, thinking about a certain elephant.

Dalton explained that Doctor Kureha comes down whenever she wants and treats patients without being asked — then takes whatever she wants from their homes and heads back to the mountain.

"But how does she get down from the mountain?" Vivi asked.

"I've heard rumors that say on full moon nights, she rides a sleigh… several people have seen her flying down through the sky. That's why they call her a witch," Dalton explained. "Also, people say she always travels with a beast — one they've never seen before."

"So, do we wait for her or climb?" Oliver asked.

"Are you crazy?! Climbing with Nami-san is insane!" Sanji told him.

"Oi, Nami! Nami! Can you hear me?" said Luffy, lightly slapping her face.

"WHAT THE HELL DO YOU THINK YOU'RE DOING?!" everyone shouted.

Nami slowly started waking up, and the first thing she saw was Luffy in front of her.

"Ah! She's awake. Listen, we can't see a doctor unless we climb a mountain. So, we're going to climb it," said Luffy, determined.

"Are you insane?! You're going to put Nami through that?!" Sanji asked, agitated.

"It's fine. I'll carry her," said Luffy.

"You can't do that! That will only make things worse!" Vivi said.

"Right now, we have two options — wait for the Witch to come down or climb that mountain," Oliver said, laying out the situation.

"But climbing a mountain is madness," said Sanji.

"Nami is sick and we don't know how long she can last. We're running out of time."

They began to argue, saying it would be extremely dangerous for her — something Nami was listening to.

'I have to get better soon,' Nami thought, smiling slightly at the situation. "Thanks, guys. I trust you, Captain."

"I knew you'd say yes! Trust us!" said Luffy, giving Nami a high five.

"Well, time to get ready to climb," said Oliver.

"Great. Not just our Captain — our Navigator's crazy too!" said Usopp. "And you! Why are you agreeing to this?!"

"Because it's the best chance we have to cure Nami," Oliver answered.

It was decided that Luffy, Oliver, and Sanji would go up the mountain, while Usopp and Vivi would stay in case Kureha came to the village.

They strapped Nami securely to Luffy so she wouldn't fall.

"If you're serious about this, I won't get in your way. But let me give you some advice. I recommend you take the climbing path — the other one is full of Lapahns. They're fierce carnivorous rabbits. If you run into a group of them, you're done for!" warned Dalton.

"Rabbits? But we're in a hurry... We'll be fine, right?" asked Luffy.

"Yeah. We'll kick their butts!" said Sanji.

They set off toward the mountain, ready for any danger, with Oliver and Sanji handling threats while Luffy focused solely on carrying Nami.

The three of them began walking through the snow, which was increasing along with the wind that was getting stronger.

"Hey, did you know that people from snowy countries don't sleep?" Luffy asked them.

"Huh? Why?" Sanji asked.

"Because if they fall asleep, they die," Luffy explained.

"Nobody can do that, idiot!" Sanji shouted at him.

"I don't think that's true. I can't imagine someone who can't sleep," Oliver said to him.

While they were talking, the Lapahn rabbits tried to attack them, but they simply dodged them, avoiding any damage and impressing the rabbits.

Luffy and Sanji started talking about the people from snowy countries, which seemed a bit strange considering they didn't seem worried at all about the rabbits attacking them.

Annoyed, Sanji kicked a rabbit and sent it flying.

"Nami-san, hang in there. We're going to get you to a doctor," Sanji said.

They kept moving forward while the snow continued to fall more and more.

"The snow is slowly building up," Oliver said, struggling to walk.

"Damn it, the snow layer is really thick around here," Luffy said.

"Hey Luffy, don't run so fast. You're going to hurt Nami-san's body!"

They looked ahead and saw a group of giant rabbits.

The giant rabbits started attacking them, so they had to dodge.

"These must be the Lapahn Dalton told us about!" Sanji said. "But look how many there are!"

There were more and more rabbits, so Oliver and Sanji had to get to work.

"Alright, we have to take care of them to move forward," Sanji said. "And Luffy, no matter what happens, don't attack them."

"Why?" he asked, confused.

"Because any impact from your attacks or the hits you take will be felt by Nami," Sanji told him.

"Alright. I won't fight," Luffy said, dodging one of the Lapahn's claws. "But what should I do then?!"

"Dodge! Just dodge them!" Sanji told him.

Oliver punched one of the Lapahn, knocking it to the ground.

"We'll take care of these! You just focus on dodging!" Oliver told him.

The rest of the Lapahn lunged at them, so they had to flee into the forest.

"Keep running!"

Oliver and Sanji struck the ones that got close, but there were too many, and the snow made it hard to attack properly.

They kept running for several minutes until they saw the Lapahn jumping up and down.

"What are they doing?" Luffy asked.

"I thought they had stopped chasing us, but now they're doing something up there," Sanji said.

"We have to get out of here now!" Oliver shouted. "They're causing an avalanche!"

Everyone ran down the mountain, chased by the avalanche.

"I swear the next time I see those rabbits, I'm going to grill them with my own hands!" Sanji shouted furiously, almost crying.

"How are we supposed to escape?!" Luffy asked.

"Just run!"

They kept running until they managed to jump onto a small hill to avoid getting caught by the snow.

They breathed a sigh of relief knowing they were safe, but the snow kept falling.

Oliver was going to try to smash it with Whirlwind Iron Cutting Fist, but he felt dizzy for a second.

'Not now'

Luffy and Sanji managed to avoid getting caught by the snow, but Oliver couldn't and was swept away by it.
