Chapter 278 - Chapter 278: Changes in the Kingdom of Dressrosa

After leaving Punk Hazard, Luffy and his crew set sail towards their next destination: the Kingdom of Dressrosa.

At this moment, Dressrosa was in a state of chaos, the aftermath of a series of events that had shaken the kingdom to its core. The departure of Doflamingo and others had left a vacuum of power, leading to turmoil.

To understand the full scope of the situation, let's rewind a few days.

When Kaido had left in a drunken stupor and headed towards the G2 branch to cause trouble for Luffy and his crew, he left behind a group of subordinates in the Kingdom of Dressrosa. Among them was Maria, one of the Tobiroppo, who had initially planned to join Kaido to G2. However, she was dissuaded by Who's-Who, another member of the Tobiroppo, and ultimately decided to stay behind, waiting for Kaido's return.

Without Kaido's supervision, the more than 4,000 pirates under the Beasts Pirates' banner slowly descended into chaos. They began to act increasingly recklessly, disregarding any form of order. Led by several Shinuchi, the group of pirates left Greenbit Island, crossed the steel bridge, and marched into the mainland of Dressrosa.

The pirates' notorious habits of destruction and chaos quickly turned the kingdom into a battlefield. Soon, some of the drunken pirates began burning, killing, looting, and wreaking havoc throughout the island.

However, Maria, Who's-Who, and Sasaki—the three key members of the Tobiroppo—did nothing to rein in the pirates. They simply watched as the chaos unfolded, allowing their subordinates to indulge in their wanton destruction.

It was this very lack of discipline that gave the Beasts Pirates free rein to terrorize Dressrosa. As the situation escalated, the kingdom was soon left in ruins.

The actions of the Beasts Pirates, however, were not without consequences. They caught the attention of the Donquixote family, the so-called "rulers" of the kingdom. Having already suffered the humiliation of defeat of their young master and Kaido's departure, the Donquixote family now found themselves being disregarded by the Beasts Pirates, who didn't seem to fear them at all.

This blatant disrespect sparked a fierce anger in the Donquixote family, and they felt compelled to act. With Kaido's absence, they believed they had regained control, but their Young Master was still in the hands of the Beasts Pirates. Desperate to save their lord, the Donquixote family immediately gathered their forces for a confrontation with the Beasts Pirates.

The battle that followed was brutal. The Donquixote family, bolstered by their elite fighters, faced off against Maria, Who's-Who, and Sasaki—the three Tobiroppo—and a formidable force of over 4,000 pirates.

Though they managed to rescue the unconscious Doflamingo, they were ultimately pushed back in the battle. The Donquixote family's forces were not enough to overpower the Beasts Pirates, and they were forced to retreat back to the palace, nursing their wounds from the battlefield.

But this wasn't the end. Determined to turn the tide, some members of the Donquixote family pushed for one final attempt. They sent out their secret weapon—Sugar, who possessed the Hobby-Hobby Fruit, to ambush the remaining members of the Beasts Pirates.

However, their plan backfired. As soon as Sugar encountered Maria's terrifying ancient zoan transformation—the Rose Wolf Spider [Rosamygale Grauvogeli]—she was so terrified by the creature's appearance that she fainted on the spot, completely unable to carry out the mission.

With the failure of their last-ditch effort, Dressrosa was plunged into complete chaos. The citizens who had been turned into toys by the Donquixote family were restored to their original forms, but they were left confused and dazed by the sudden flood of memories.

As the people remembered their past lives, they began to share their tearful stories of what had happened to them under the cruel rule of the Donquixote family. The truth of their oppression spread quickly throughout the entire kingdom.

The Donquixote family's reign of terror had finally come to light, and the kingdom erupted into a riot. Citizens, fueled by anger and pain, rose up against their former oppressors. The Donquixote family found themselves under attack from both inside and outside, their once-powerful grip on Dressrosa slipping away with every passing moment.

In the face of mounting pressure, the Donquixote family was pushed back further. If it hadn't been for a critical piece of news arriving from Wano Country—that the Marines had launched an assault—the Beasts Pirates would have likely wiped out the Donquixote family entirely that day. Maria and the other Tobiroppo, realizing the situation was critical, hurriedly returned to Wano to regroup and retreat.

Though the Donquixote family had narrowly escaped complete destruction, the war had taken a heavy toll on them. Their forces were depleted, and they had no time to address the growing rebellion in Dressrosa. With the situation spiraling out of control, the family made the difficult decision to abandon the kingdom.

They fled the island, leaving behind the ruins they had once ruled. Even with Kaido's eventual return to threaten them, the damage had already been done. The Donquixote family's influence had been shattered, and the kingdom was beyond saving.

Meanwhile, Doflamingo, still unconscious, was eventually roused from his coma. When he regained his senses, he learned from his family and underground informants about the chaotic events that had unfolded during his absence. It was clear that his departure from Dressrosa had been nothing short of disastrous.

Doflamingo, who had been in such a hurry to flee, had taken little with him—just some cash and treasure.

Doflamingo made the difficult decision to leave everything behind and retreat in disgrace, abandoning his base, the kingdom, and his once-great power.

As for the citizens of Dressrosa, their reaction to Doflamingo's departure was far from one of relief. They had suffered greatly during the three-way conflict, losing countless family members and friends in the process. Their homes had been destroyed, and the kingdom had been left in ruins.

When Luffy and his crew finally arrived in the skies above Dressrosa aboard the Stormbreaker, they saw the devastation below. The once-beautiful kingdom now lay in ruins, the scars of war and conflict evident in every corner.

"Assholes," Luffy muttered under his breath, his fists clenched in anger. "Kaido and Doflamingo, I'll kill them sooner or later. And don't forget the World Government... they're behind all of this, in the end."
