Harry and Hagrid stepped into Diagon Alley, and this time Harry wasn't in a rush. He took his time marveling at the sights and sounds of the bustling street. The shops had a very different feel compared to Muggle shopping streets, and Harry was captivated by the quirky buildings lining each side of the road, with narrow alleys leading into even more wonders.
"No wonder young kids are amazed when they first see this sight," Harry thought, "when they are introduced to the wizarding world." Even though the shabby entrance of the Leaky Cauldron was unimpressive, Diagon Alley more than made up for it with its excitement and charm.
"First, we gotta go to Gringotts," said Hagrid, leading Harry through the busy street.
Witches and wizards bustled about their business, giving Harry a glimpse into the vibrant life of the magical world. Shops lined the cobbled street, each one offering a unique look into various aspects of magic. There were stores selling potions in shimmering glass bottles, their contents bubbling and changing colors. One shop had a display of broomsticks, each one sleeker and more advanced than the last, while another advertised enchanted quills that wrote on their own.
Harry's attention was caught by a bookstore with a sign that read "Flourish and Blotts." Its windows were filled with towering stacks of books, some of which seemed to glow faintly or whisper as he walked past. Nearby, a shop called "Eeylops Owl Emporium" had owls of every size and breed, their eyes following him with keen intelligence.
A bit further down, Harry saw "Magical Menagerie," a pet shop where cages held an array of strange and wonderful creatures. He spotted a cat with fur that changed color and a cage of chattering pixies. He then saw a black cat that looked directly at him and screeched, sending a shiver down his spine.
Now that he wasn't in a hurry, Harry took his time, absorbing every detail as they walked up to the large white building standing out among the smaller shops.
"Gringotts," said Hagrid.
They had reached a snowy white building that towered over the other little shops. Standing beside its burnished bronze doors, wearing a uniform of scarlet and gold, was —
"Yeah, that's a goblin," said Hagrid quietly as they walked up the white stone steps toward him. The goblin was about a head shorter than Harry. He had a swarthy, clever face, a pointed beard, and, Harry noticed, very long fingers and feet. He bowed as they walked inside. Now they were facing a second pair of doors, silver this time, with words engraved upon them:
Enter, stranger, but take heed
Of what awaits the sin of greed,
For those who take, but do not earn,
Must pay most dearly in their turn.
So if you seek beneath our floors
A treasure that was never yours,
Thief, you have been warned, beware
Of finding more than treasure there.
"Like I said, yeh'd be mad ter try an' rob it," said Hagrid.
A pair of goblins bowed them through the silver doors, and they were in a vast marble hall. About a hundred more goblins were sitting on high stools behind a long counter, scribbling in large ledgers, weighing coins in brass scales, and examining precious stones through eyeglasses. There were too many doors to count leading off the hall, and yet more goblins were showing people in and out of these. Hagrid and Harry made for the counter.
"Morning," said Hagrid to a free goblin. "We've come ter take some money outta Mr. Harry Potter's safe."
"You have his key, sir?"
"Got it here somewhere," said Hagrid, and he started emptying his pockets onto the counter, scattering a handful of moldy dog biscuits over the goblin's book of numbers. The goblin wrinkled his nose. Harry watched the goblin on their right weighing a pile of rubies as big as glowing coals.
"Got it," said Hagrid at last, holding up a tiny golden key.
The goblin looked at it closely.
"That seems to be in order."
"An' I've also got a letter here from Professor Dumbledore," said Hagrid importantly, throwing out his chest. "It's about the You-Know-What in vault seven hundred and thirteen."
The goblin read the letter carefully.
Harry looked at this exchange with a sharp glint in his eyes that he masked quickly enough that nobody caught it.
---
Harry then followed Hagrid and the goblin to his vault, and to say he was ecstatic looking at the large pile of gold was an understatement.
'I know this is not all the Potter inheritance, but just with this, I can start a lot of the plans that have been on pause,' Harry thought, reflecting on the plans he had made throughout the seven years he had been in this world.
All this time he had not just been sitting on his hands, even though he had not come back to magical Britain after the incident in Knockturn Alley.
Harry gritted his teeth whenever he thought back to the time where he was almost in death's embrace. 'If not for finding Inni, Mini, Moo…' Harry shook his head to clear his thoughts. 'Well, Inni will be very happy now that she can use these funds for the business plans we had come up with.'
Hagrid helped Harry pile some of it into a bag.
Harry made sure to get just enough for the supplies for Hogwarts. 'Well, now that I have the key, it doesn't matter how much I keep on hand. He he he…'
"The gold ones are Galleons," Hagrid explained. "Seventeen silver Sickles to a Galleon and twenty-nine Knuts to a Sickle. It's easy enough. Right, that should be enough for a couple o' terms. We'll keep the rest safe for yeh." Then he turned to the goblin. "Vault seven hundred and thirteen now, please, and can we go more slowly?"
"One speed only," said the goblin.
They were going even deeper now and gathering speed. The air became colder and colder as they hurtled around tight corners. They went rattling over an underground ravine, and Harry leaned over the side to try to see if he could spot the dragon that was all the way down at the dark bottom, but Hagrid groaned and pulled him back by the scruff of his neck.
Harry watched with focused eyes as Hagrid picked up the package he knew would start wars. 'Well, wars have already been fought for this very item.'
People forget that behind the simple old man exterior, the Flamel couple were not just alchemists but deadly wizards, with the backing of the entire French wizarding society.
Harry had read enough history during his idle times to catch up on the magical world and learn about the influence the 'immortal wizards' of France had on their magical community.
