Chapter 11 - The Difference

Jonno was scared. Rightfully so because vampires exist and his father was right. For years he had rejected the premise of the supernatural and even blamed it for his mother leaving. But now he had seen it with his own eyes. Vampires exist and his father was a slayer. He had tried to bring it up with his dad but there was never any time or it wasn't the right place. The girl he had a crush on was part of a family who bit necks and consumed blood. A weird sensation came over him. Disgust. He had been in love with a monster. A monster that probably used him to her own devices. Vlad the seemingly innocent boy was a serpent that attacked humans like him. A sheep in wolf's clothing. The Count, the biggest of all offenders. He sat in his room in his caravan while they sat in their castle living life amongst vulnerable men and women that had no idea what they were. No more excuses. No fear. He would follow his dad as a Van Helsing and eliminate their presence in Stokely and wherever the wind took them. He walked to the phone they had hanging on the wall next to their door and began to dial in a familiar number. His father's.

Vlad walked out of his room taking deep breaths. He had been tolerating Boris for the last couple days before school starts and he has to face Robin. A Robin that doesn't like vampires and a Robin that doesn't remember that he is one. He knew why he couldn't be friends with breathers now. They were too different from one another and falling too deep into each others' world was too dangerous for both. He was a vampire now. He should be a vampire now. Either way, Boris had flew over his bed one too many times for him to stay in his room. He already had his school uniform on and just went to go make some cereal. Judging by the fact it was still slightly dark out and the sun hadn't fully risen, he had some time before he had to leave for school. He sat at the dining table with his cereal bowl full of Cheerios and sat there eating it exhausted. He had barely had a hour of sleep between Boris and the nightmares. A weird dark figure had haunted his sleep and he couldn't see its face. For all he knew it could be Mr Branagh under that dark hood. It seemed that he couldn't even tell how tall or big it was. Just this shadowy figure that forced him awake every time it infiltrated his mind. He kept eating his cereal unaware of a mysterious figure behind him creeping up. A hand was placed on Vlad's shoulder making him jump slightly.

"Calm down, Vlad. It's just your Uncle Harvey," reassured Harvey. Vlad breathed out. "You okay Vlad. I heard what happened to you with the Westenras. Have you begun the change yet." Vlad shook his head. Harvey frowned. "No tooth pain or flying. Nothing unusual." Vlad shook his head again. Harvey had a contemplative look on his face. "Vlad come with me,". Vlad stood and was ushered to a room that he had never seen before. Harvey opened the door and gestured for Vlad to enter. Vlad gulped, held his breath and tentatively walked in. He was faced with a mirror that had a beautiful gold frame and two weird golden statues with horns. Vlad looked into the mirror and all he saw was his own reflection. "What do you see Vlad?" asked Harvey. Vlad looked deeper into the mirror and still only saw himself.

"My reflection. What else should I be seeing." asked Vlad. Harvey stood confused with his nephew's answer before a look of realisation came across his face. He grimaced. The man with auburn hair turned and left the room without a word to Vlad. Vlad waited before realising that he wasn't going to come back. Vlad walked out of the room and back to the dining table and realised that his uncle was whispering to his father probably about what had happened in the mirror room. The Count saw his son and told Harvey to stop. He walked to his son and stopped right in front of him.

"Well Vladdy time for you to go to that wretched school of yours. Ingrid has already began to leave with those idiot Branagh boys. Remember no talk of vampires around your insolent friend. Maybe even take your cousin Boris to see the sights before he can never be in the light of day again," he smirked. Vlad looked at his father and smiled. Time for school and maybe it would all go smoothly with Robin by his side again. Although Boris may be a pain in the neck to be around. School was where he needed to be.

School was not where he needed to be. He had just been punched in the face and gained a broken nose due to the slayer spawn. Now he can't even explain to Robin why he was punched in the face and Boris was pestering him every 5 seconds. Boris began to open his mouth before Vlad gave a dark look that made his cousin shut his mouth quickly. Robin kept looking at him suspiciously but didn't make a big fuss. Vlad hated school. He couldn't talk to Robin about his problems. Chloe wouldn't speak to him because of what his dad had done to Robin and the two idiot twins had to piss him off in every way possible before Ingrid stepped in. Even the meek Jonno thought he could step to him. Well two could play that game. Let's see how Jonno would like it when his dad got the same treatment. Vlad stepped in to the woodwork classroom and smiled. He pressed the button on the blackboard and grabbed a wooden hammer and pressed the button again. Once he was sure there was no trace of him he put the hammer in his backpack and waited. He could wait. It was easy enough. He stood next to the door with his hand in his bag and anticipated the slayer's imminent appearance. He saw the handle be grabbed and pulled his back and as the door opened, he began to swing. He stopped abruptly. It was Ingrid. Behind her was Boris. He dropped the hammer. Ingrid looked at him in fright. He froze. There was no excuse he could make. Ingrid out a hand on his shoulder.

"Are you okay, Vlad," asked his sister. He looked up with tears in his eyes and he opened his mouth just to close it. Boris stepped back not wanting to interrupt the two siblings.

"I.. don't know," croaked Vladimir. "I keep having these nightmares and wanting to do these things I'd never do and when I do them it feels good. What's wrong with me?" whimpered Vlad. Ingrid opened her mouth and then closed it again. It was obvious she didn't know. But she wrapped her arms around her little brother and closed the door.

"Whatever this is, we will find out. You're a Dracula remember. We only run from angry mobs with pitchforks," joked Ingrid. Vlad chuckled through his tears and Ingrid put her arm around him and said,"Come on, I can probably get us both out of here and back home easily. We can catch up on school later."

The Count was angry. Livid. He knew there was something wrong with Vlad's transformation but this was not what he had expected. He would skin those former in-laws of his when he caught them. Their pride and stubbornness had created conflict that caused ripples that hit his son and their grandson. His son would suffer because of their machinations. Vlad would never become a vampire.
