Chapter 4 - The Human Village

Sans had finally arrived at the human village. It had taken a while, and he had a couple of naps in between. It seems that just because he's a little physically stronger than before, it doesn't mean he's not as lazy. As a result it was now the next day when he arrived.

As sans approached the front gates, he spotted two armored humans in front of it.

'Probably guards. I hope they let me in without an ID. I doubt my "citizen of snowdin" card will get me far.' sans chuckles to himself.

Once he reached an appropriate distance, the guards asked him for his business. Simply replying that he's not from around, and that he needs a place to stay in the meantime, the guards let him in without much fuss.

"Welp, that was way easier than I thought it would be. Easier than it probably should be if I'm being honest." That may be a security problem.

But not his problem.

Sans looks around the village and takes in the view. There's quite a few people walking around the streets, even though it's still early, if the sun is any indicator.

He's still getting used to that by the way. This is the first time he's seeing it, after all. Being able to see the passing of time without a clock astonishes sans, but still, he moves on.

The structures here are quite aged. They have the vibes of snowdin, but more oriental, like in those historic animes alphys showed him. While he never really understood the hype around those shows, it made papyrus happy, and that's enough for him.

Continuing down the street, sans becomes keenly aware of the looks he's receiving.

'it makes sense. My face looks a lot different than everybody else's. Not to mention my clothes.'

Sans had come across a pond during his aimless trek earlier, and was shocked at how his face looked. He wasn't sure how handsome he was in human terms, but he thinks he doesn't look half bad. But he very much looked like a foreigner.

This was reinforced by his clothing. Nobody wore anything like him. They wore vests and trousers, with the occasional kimono, if alphys was anything to go off of. He has a feeling a lot of alphys' trivia would come in handy here.

Eventually, his wandering had brought results. He came across a book renting center. Interested in what the books of gensokyo have to offer, he goes inside, unsure of what else to do.

The door swings open, and sans looks around. It gives off librarby vibes, which sans heavily appreciates. Sans then directs his attention to the girl at the reception.

She was a young girl with red eyes, light red hair, and twintails adorned with bells. She was wearing a checkered kimono and apron with Kosuzu and Suzunaan written on the front. She seemed like a nice kid, sans thought.

"Hello, welcome to suzunaan book rental! How may I help you?" The young girl smiled and greeted sans brightly.

"Heya, I'm just having a quick peek around. I'm new to this place y'see, and there's a lot to see."

"Oh, in that case, is there something you're looking for in particular?" The girl tilts her head.

"Nothing specific, really."

"Okay then, don't let me stop you. Lemme know when you find a book you like!"

"Will do." He turns away.

'nice kid. If only a certain genocidal maniac could follow her example.' sans offhandedly remarks.

He looks around for a bit before landing on the history section. He realizes that he doesn't know much about his surroundings besides what this place is called. And so he skims through a couple of interesting reads before coming across a large book titled "Gensokyo Chronicles Vol. 9, 1st edition."

'Written by Hieda no Akyuu. Sounds like someone important.' sans thinks. Cracking open the book, he begins to read.

'Lets see here... A compilation of important events and people? Might be useful.' sans thinks to himself. He might have to take this book with him to actually read instead of skimming it.

Opening the book to a random page, he lands on a sketch of a mysterious young lady. She had platinum colored hair, topped with a white mob cap and styled with a red ribbon, and wore a white dress.

She would have looked like a normal human, if not for the huge bat wings. Of course, this caught sans' eye immediately, so he read her page.

Sans was extremely interested in this article. He only thought that vampires were just fiction, so the fact that one was somewhere in Gensokyo was very interesting, and very concerning. Still, flipping through more pages showed a plethora of other figures, both human and yokai.

'Speaking of, what even is a yokai? I got an idea of it from alphys' animes, but this isn't anime.' sans hummed to himself, and decided to put that thought on hold. There were more important things right now.

"I'll think about it later. For now, I should take this thing with me. Who knows how useful it'll be." Picking up the book, sans was about to go rent it out, before he stopped.

Rent the book? With what money?

Checking his pockets, sans only found a couple pieces of Gold. Not even enough for a water dog. And he doubts he could pay with his tab either.

Do they even take gold here?

Sans facepalms and groans. He's gonna have to think of a way around that. Putting the book back. He puts his hands in his pockets and wonders what to do.

"First order of business, I need money...

...

...

...

how do I make money?" sans got stuck on step one.

"I don't suppose they need a sentry do they?" sans ponders. A dilemma indeed.

"Hmmm..."

"Hmmmmmmmmmm..."

"HMMMMM..!?!?"

"hm."

...

What is bro thinking about?

"... Ketchup..."

Fuck all, apparently.

As he walks past the reception again, the girl talks to him.

"Hello mister, did you find anything you want?"

"Yep, But I'm flat broke." Sans stated bluntly.

"Eh? Oh, that's... Unfortunate. No money at all huh?" The girl, Kosuzu sympathized

"Hey, With some luck, maybe I'll get by. By the way, I'm Sans, nice to meet ya Kosuzu." Sans finally introduced himself.

"Huh? Kosuzu?" She asked confusedly.

To which sans points at her apron and says, "Is that not your name?"

Kosuzu's eyes widen in realization, and she becomes slightly embarrassed. "Ah! Yeah.. that's my name. But my full name is Kosuzu Motoori, nice to meet you too Sans."

"Great! Now that we're pals, can you do me a favor?" He asked inconspicuously.

Kosuzu smiled wryly. "Sorry Sans, I can't let you have the book without renting it first."

"Shucks." Sans looked slightly dejected. How many people asked that question before him for her to read him like that?

"Well, I'll get outta your hair then. Cya 'round Kosuzu."

"Later Sans, I hope your financial situation improves!"

"Yeah yeah, me too." He walked away.

Looking at his back, Kosuzu thinks to herself, "what a weird person, but he seems fun."

Exiting the book rental, his left eye flashed blue, and a small distortion in space appeared under his feet. sans looked left and right, confirming that nobody saw, and chose a direction to walk in. The task right now was to get a job, which was easier said than done.

Maybe he should have asked Kosuzu if they were hiring?

Nonetheless, the day was half over, so he needed something.

Walking out on the crowded streets reminded him of the royal capital. The busyness of the streets was palpable. All the food stands and people hustling about almost brought a nostalgic tear to his eye. As he was caught in the feeling of melancholy, something caught his attention.

"'Request board' huh? How old fashioned."
