Lexie's POV
I groaned in annoyance as I watched her silly play with that stupid friend of hers.
"What could they be doing together at this hour?"
"Dude, you're prying too much," my subconscious mind brought me back to reality and I hissed in frustration.
I had come to the freshman party as planned with Roselia, my new flame. But I lost the will to party. I started the car again and drove off. Katerina, you don't know what's coming for you.
I got home and met my pesky sister. "Hey, bro." Her smiles were suspicious, and I knew she was up to something.
"Just spill it, Sandie. I've got no strength for dramas," I told her tiredly.
She made a sad face, and I immediately regretted my tone.
I pulled her closer. "I'm sorry, Sandra. I'm just tired. Let's talk in my room."
Her expression brightened, making me smile. I wondered what mischief my sister had in store tonight. We've always been best buddies and each other's confidants, until that girl arrived. She came to steal my sister—and my parents too.
"-and your heart-" my subconscious mind whispered, and I quickly shook off the thoughts. Hell no!! I hope I didn't scream out loud.
In my room, Sandie followed. "This discussion must be so important that you didn't let me freshen up."
"My bad. It's been on my mind, and I need to let it out before I go crazy," she blurted. I sensed her desperation in her voice and her face.
What could make Sandie so desperate? She's not usually bothered by much. This must be really important.
"A crush at school?"
"What? Of course not! I haven't met a guy who meets my standards yet. I'm Sandra Carson, bro," she bragged. That's typical of my sister; she thinks highly of herself, and I admire that.
"Okay, spill it. I'm all ears," I said, and she moved closer to me on the bed.
"It's about Katie," she said, and my heart skipped a beat. I suddenly felt nervous at the mention of her name.
"What about her?" I tried to maintain composure.
"You see, Katie is family, no matter how much you try to push her away. I know I've talked to you about this many times, but this time, it's different." She looked straight into my eyes, and I knew she was serious. What did she want me to do about it?
"Can you just do me a simple favor and keep an eye on her at school?" Her eyes glistened with emotion.
I burst into laughter. "You're not serious right now, are you? Are you?" I continued laughing. I couldn't believe what ridiculous request Sandra was making.
"Bro, I know it sounds ridiculous and unbelievable, but trust me, Katie is being bullied. You know how fragile she is. I heard from Sia's sister that some girls in her faculty keep taunting her." She held my hand this time.
"Look, Sandra. I don't really understand what all this is about, but it won't work. Katie is in college, for crying out loud, in her second year. She should be able to handle whatever is happening to her. Besides, it would be embarrassing for me to hover around a second-year student when I'm in my final lap at school. I have more important things to do," I said, feeling tired. Bullying in college? Unbelievable. I felt it was a ploy to bring us together. Sandra had tried so many times in the past to bring us together, but it didn't work because I find the girl irritating to the core.
"Remember you promised to fulfill my wish when I saved your ass from drowning. Is this what I'm getting?" Sandra seemed annoyed, and I didn't want to see her angry side.
"Come on, Sandie. Why would you bring that up now? It's true I promised to grant any of your wishes, but setting me up with Katie is out of the question. I just don't vibe with her. I don't hate her. After all, we haven't had any issues in the past few days," I tried to reason with her.
"I'm not setting you up with her. Trust me, this isn't a trick or a scheme to get you talking to her. I just want those girls at her school to know she's not ordinary. Please, do this as a fulfillment of your promise." She pleaded, pouting cutely.
I chuckled at her childishness. I couldn't resist anymore. "Okay, fine! I'll do it!" I agreed. Maybe this was also an opportunity to carry out my mission. "-and to keep that annoying boy away from her," my mind chipped in, and I frowned in disagreement.
Sandra hugged me excitedly and playfully kissed my face.
"Ewww, Sandie, I'm a mature man now. I might get a girlfriend soon."
"Get a girlfriend first then," she retorted and bolted out of my room.
Finally! I sighed in relief. My phone rang immediately. It was Roselia. Shit! What do I tell her?
I picked up after the second ring. "Hey, hottie."
"Hi, coldie. Never knew you were an asshole." The background was noisy, and I felt a bit bad for ditching her.
"Babe, I'm sorry. I got an important assignment to attend to. I could have called, but I was too busy. I'm sorry, okay?" I'm not the type to plead with a lady too much, but I couldn't let go of Roselia. She's too hot for that.
"Fine. So, are we still meeting up or..."
"Of course, yeah. Let's hang out tomorrow. I'll text you the time and address," I quickly responded before she changed her mind.
"I hope you won't ditch me again. I'll be expecting your text."
"Babe, I really want to show you a sweeter side of me. So don't worry."
"Can't wait." She giggled, and we talked about a few random things before hanging up.
