"Hey.." Chuuya said gently, trying to make his voice as small and weak as possible, like he was doing with his body as to not frighten her. "What are you doing here?"
The girl looked up through her hands, there were no lab coats or anything that seemed to be connected to the lab around him. The small child replied after calming down a bit, he seemed like he would be safe.. Maybe. "Hiding.." her voice was shaking, her legs were bleeding and so were the hands she was using to cover her eyes.
"What are we hiding from?" Chuuya asked, moving closer behind the rock, to get a better look at the child and to make it seem like he was also hiding.
"The m-men in white.." the child stuttered, struggling to speak with a dry throat and mouth, she couldn't remember the last time she ate or had anything to drink.
Chuuya grabbed his flask, knowing he shouldn't give a child watered down alcohol but considering the fact that she looked like she was about to die of dehydration he opened it and offered it to her "don't drink too much, only one gulp, you aren't allowed to drink anyway." he flinched slightly when he saw the tony, thin hands of the child reach out to grasp the flask, unable to actually take it out of his hands.
Chuuya looked the girl over again, the ripped lab gown, the blood and dirt everywhere, the overly thin body… he shook his head and pulled out his phone, making a call "Akuatgawa, I need you to get me a bottle of normal water and put it in my office and something easy to eat."
"Do you have another hangover, Nakahara-sama?" the man on the other side of the phone asked, eyes dead and his face twisted in a frown.
"No–" Chuuya looked at the small child, putting the lid back on the flask and putting it away, the phone trapped between his shoulder and his cheek. "Something a lot worse." With that he hung up and put his phone away, taking off the jacket he normally wore on his shoulders and smiling gently at the child.
"Come here, let's take you somewhere warm.." he opened his arms, ready to take her in one swoop and carry her inside the building they were next to. "The men in white wont hurt you, I'll make sure of it."
The girl ever so slowly moved towards him, standing up on her shaking legs, Chuuya could tell by the way she was standing that she had glass in her feet and he would have to take her to see a doctor or something. "Promise?"
Chuuya nodded, standing up and sweeping her off her feet, confused as to why she was still covering her eyes ``I promise.'' He wrapped the jacket around her small frame and carried her inside. Chuuya refused to stop to talk to anyone like he would normally do, he headed directly to his office and sat the girl on his desk.
Chuuya could feel Arahabaki buzzing inside him, practically screaming at him to protect this child, however he didn't know why. 'Do you have a name? Something they called you when you were with the men in white?"
The girl didn't even stop to think about it as she answered the man's question "Subject A7S54."
Chuuya's mouth went dry and he nodded "well you won't be going back that anymore. I'll give you a new name." he smiled softly and petted her head gently, pulling his hand away to find it covered in soot, ash, dirt and other… questionable things.
"Do you know how long you were on your feet?" he asked gently, the door to his office was locked but he was expecting Akuatagawa so it wouldn't be a surprise if the man in question showed up.
"Ah.." the child thought, unsure of how long it was, she hadn't been paying attention; she had just kept running, through streets, through forests and parks and anything until she ended up on this property. "The yellow ball in the sky disappeared five times I think.. Maybe more..?"
Chuuya's heart sank in his chest, this child had been running for five days, purely on adrenaline and now that it had worn off the child could feel all the pain in her body and the exhaustion. "Okay, I have a friend of mine coming with something for you to eat and drink, then you can take a nap in that comfy seat over there while I look for a name to give you."
The small child nodded "what I call you?"
"You can call me whatever you want." he said with a gentle smile, he was going to have Kōyō get him some clothes for the child too. So he gently moved the girl onto his lap and did some quick measurements, which wouldn't scare the girl before sending an email to his elder sister figure with his request.
He changed tabs and started to look up names, unisex, girl names and even boy names in case she liked one of those more than the other two options of names.
However they couldn't even start looking for names properly. A knock sounded through the room which made Chuuya stand, he refused to leave the child alone for even a second so he carried the girl over with her sitting on his hip. Chuuya opened the door to find both Akuatagawa and Kōyō at his office door.
"Chuuya-san." The woman greeted with a smile, her face twisted with confusion and a slight hit of anger. "Can I come in?"
Akuatagawa stood there awkwardly, holding a bag of water and different baby foods, he had taken 'easy to eat' in the correct context then. Chuuya pulled open the door "don't sit on the couch closest to my desk." he said without much care in his voice, but something laying under it proved it was a warning.
The two walked inside, Chuuya closing and locking his office door again. He sat back down at his desk, child back on his lap again as he opened a hand toward Akuatagawa who handed him the bag.
"What is it ane-san?" He looked up at the woman, letting the child play with the plastic bag. It was her first time out of a lab in who knows how long so he was going to do everything in his power to make her feel safe.
"Who's the child?" The woman asked bluntly, eyes narrowing at the dirt and blood covered girl who was hiding her eyes still. "And why is she covering her eyes?"
"This child is subject A7S54, that is what she told me her name is, I'm currently looking for a new one so I can adopt her." he shrugged and looked down, moving the thin plastic out of the child's mouth and opening a pouch of yoghourt instead, holding it while the child learned how to use it.
"And I believe it's her ability that she has no control over, which might be the only reason she escaped from whatever lap she was in in the first place." he said with a small shrug as he looked back at the woman. "Anything else ane-san?"
"Yes." the woman said, sitting forward slightly "how old is she?"
Chuuya looked down at the girl and shrugged "four? Three maybe?" he mumbled, judging her by her height "two maybe?"
Kōyō shook her head "I would say she's five years old, judging from the scars that I can see from below the dirt, they're at least four years old."
You could see Chuuya's face drop, but when the child took the pouch in shaking hands, struggling to hold it up he smiled gently and offered assistance. "I want to find out where this place is and destroy it." His voice was deathly low, his eyes shaking with what Akuatagawa would assume was rage.
"I'll work on finding it, Nakahara-sama." The black haired male said and stood, leaving the room, making sure the door was closed behind him.
Chuuya looked over at his elder sister-figure after watching the younger of the three mafia members leave. "Do you think you can find me some clothes that would fit her?"
The woman hummed "I can." She said with a smile "Let me know if you ever need a break I'll step in to care for her."
"I'll need you to come with me to the agency after I give her a bath, I'm going to get Miss Akiko Yosano to take a look and heal her if she's able to. I won't let her kill this child just to heal her though.."
The elderly woman nodded, smiling at Chuuya. "I'll be there for emotional support." She then left the room, locking the door behind her as she left, two other members of the mafia knew about Chuuya's plan to adopt the child, now all Chuuya had to do was pick her name and make fake adoption papers.
*****
Chuuya was just printing off the adoption papers when there was a small knock on the door, the girl was still wrapped up in his coat but was on the couch he had saved for her nap time. Chuuya slowly pushed himself out of his chair and walked over. "Who is it?"
"Chuuya-san, I've brought the clothes you've requested and have informed the agency that you will be going over there tonight to talk to Yosano-san that you will be stopping by in a few hours." she said gently, watching the door open to let her inside, the door closed and locked once she was in.
Chuuya sat down at his desk, two names on the table. "Thank you ane-san." he smiled and held up the sheet of paper, one name scribbled out read as Miyo and the other was Kagome, those were Chuuya's two names he had come to choose from. "Which one do you think I should pick?"
Kōyō smiled and hummed, watching the stress climb up to take hold of the boy in front of her. "I think Myio is a wonderful name, it means beautiful child, while Kagome is a pretty name it means lost." she said gently.
Chuuya nodded, taking a breath. "I'll go with Miyo." he smiled gently and started to sign the paperwork he had made, faking an orphanage and a head as well, just so it seemed legit "I'l have her attempt to draw an 'M' on it since she doesn't know how to write.."
The woman with pink-ish hair smiled. "I'm glad. I know she's in good hands with you Chuuya-san." She stood and glanced at the girl "go home, give her a bath and remove that glass out of her poor feet before going to the agency, I worry if it's kept in there any longer it will go deeper."
Chuuya stood, packing the adoption forms into his vest before walking over to the child and picking her up gently, he wouldn't need his ability to carry her, she was way too light for someone her size let alone age.
"Okay ane-san." he said gently, putting his hat on the girl's face, hiding her eyes to stop people from seeing them when she woke up.
"Ah! I also added a blind fold, she'll be able to see but no one will be able to see her eyes, this way she can see as she moves around." the woman smiled, watching a smile form on the executives face.
"Thank you ane-san, I'm sure she'll love it." he said, walking out the door while hugging his newly 'adoptive' daughter in his arms, a smile across his face as he walked out of the building to get home so he could wash her, his hat and his clothes.
*****
When Chuuya got home he started a warm bath, making sure it wasn't too hot with the under of his wrist and making sure not to fill it up too much as to not scare the girl. Chuuya had gotten changed into a more casual outfit, a loose fitting, white T-shirt and black baggy pants with socks.
He undressed the girl who was now awake, removing that horrid lap gown and putting it in a corner so he could burn it with Dazai or something tonight while Yosano checked on her. Chuuya hadn't removed the glass yet.
Simply putting the girl in the warm water and keeping her feet out of it considering how the water turned a black-ish brown the moment she was put in, Chuuya changed it and started to help wash her.
After changing the water several times for the girl's body. You could now see all her wounds, scars and skin colour clearly, she was very pale as if no sun had touched her before, all the scars and wounds seemed like they were black against her skin, as if she had been painted with soot or they were charred in. Chuuya wanted to vomit.
He started to wash her hair, he would wash her feet and remove the glass after he had finished the rest of her. She leaned into the elder man's hands, surprised how gentle he was. She was used to being tossed around and stabbed multiple times a day, this was new and she liked it.. It made her feel safe.
The warm water washing over her face and body also made her feel safe. It was different from the cold water she was dunked into harshly whenever she did something wrong. Chuuya smiled and watched the girl relax into his touch which kept her in place using his ability so she wouldn't slip and hurt herself.
Chuuya smiled and pulled out the shampoo, he had gotten most of the dirt out of her hair with just water, now he was going to finish her short hair off with shampoo and conditioner. He had had to cut it while he had been bathing her so it was in a horribly done bob cut but he had tried to make it look good, it looked better than Atsushi's bangs.
"Keep your eyes closed, we don't want you to get this in them." he said gently, squeezing out a small amount of the pink liquid that smelled of roses and rubbed his hands together to evenly coat them, that way teh shampoo would go in a lot better.
"Okay mama.." the girl mumbled out, unaware of her own words as she spoke.
Chuuya's heart jumped, trying to rip itself out of his chest because of how cute this girl was. He started to rub it into the girl's hair and skull, doing his best to get any of the leftover dirt and grime in it. He had also added something to kill any fleas or nits in her hair as well.
The girl wasn't paying attention to anything, just relaxing against the side of the tub, she felt extremely safe and didn't understand why she did. "Mama.. who was the pretty lady earlier?"
Chuuya hummed, smiling "that's Kōyō Ozaki, you can call her ane-san, or oba-san." he smiled gently, rinsing her hair out and doing the same as before, adding more shampoo, he was almost done cleaning out the girls brown hair of really old dirt and grime. "She's your auntie."
"Auntie..?"
"That means she's my sister." he said gently, trying to explain it in a way to understand. "She's older than me so she's my older sister?"
"Oh.. oki!" The girl was so goddamn cute, Chuuya was going to die from cuteness. "Did oba-san give you clothes for me..?"
"Yes, she did." he hummed softly, rinsing her hair out again. "Keep your eyes closed Miyo." he said as he added conditioner to her now clean hair.
"Miyo..?"
"Yes, that's the name I chose for you," he smiled gently "you are no longer subject A7S54, you are Miyo now." He started to massage the conditioner into her hair. "Your name means 'beautiful child'" he watched the girl's expression as tears pooled up in her eyes and started to fall into the dirty water.
"Mama thinks I'm beau-ful?" She stumbled over her words, tongue too short to say such a big word.
"I do." he said gently, oh how he wanted to hug the shit out of this small child but he would wait until the girls first bath was over. After Chuuya changed the water again he gently started to clean her feet and legs, making sure not to remove the glass until it was completely clean and sanitary.
The man them grabbed numbing cream and rubbed it on her foot, waiting for fifteen minutes while explaining to the girl what a phone was and what it was for, he planned on getting her a phone so when they weren't together he could be called if anything happens, like her losing control of her ability or something.
Chuuya started to remove the glass, the larger parts with his fingers and the smaller parts with tweezers, always checking to see if she was in any pain before continuing in. Once all the glass was out, he cleaned the wounds and added a disinfect cream to them, wrapping her feet in bandages to suppress the bleeding and keep the cream there.
Chuuya sighed gently as he got her out of the bath and onto his lap, drying her off and dressing her in a warm, oversized hoodie (which belonged to him) and some of the pants Kōyō had given them. "Now we have to go see a few friends of mine to make sure you're all okay.." he said gently, kissing her forehead.
The child nodded slowly "not the men in white?"
"Not the men in white, we're going to the ADA."
"What's that?"
Chuuya hummed, he didn't want to drag his child into the world of the mafia or into the detective agency "armed demons agency..?" he mumbled out, trying to make up a fake name that wouldn't scare the child.
"Demons?" the girl teared up. Chuuya had failed.
He gulped "no darling, I was being silly." he said softly, practically a whisper "ADA stands for 'the armed detectives agency'" he said gently, rubbing her back "they protect Yokohama."
The girl nodded slowly "no demons..?"
"There are no demons.." he paused. "There is one demon and he is just silly." He was thinking about Dazai when he said that, hugging the girl close "now let's put your blindfold on so you don't scare anyone with youre beautiful eyes." he hummed softly, the girl gasping.
"No one will sleep forever when they look in my eyes?"
Chuuya held back a sound which was made up of confusion, worry and panic.. Just what was this child's ability? Why could she kill people just by meeting their eyes? He took a breath and smiled sweetly at her "No one will anymore, I promise."
The girl started to cry, this time they were happy tears, tears which stained her adoptive fathers shirt.
