In the eyes of the Ruan Family, what seemed commonplace was, to her, imbued with magic.
The little squirrel, after nuzzling Ruan Jiaojiao, held up its tiny paw and handed her a nut it had treasured, chirping to suggest she eat it.
Ruan Jiaojiao took the nut and after inspecting it, said helplessly, "I can't crack it open."
It seemed the squirrel understood her, as it tilted its head, took back the nut with its little paw, and with a couple of crunches, cracked it open, rolling the nut around and revealing the white flesh inside.
It was a hazelnut.
Ruan Jiaojiao didn't mind, she took a bite and then handed the other half back to the squirrel, which also started munching on it with chirps.
Above their heads, several other squirrels, seeing this, did the same, chirping as they ran back to their tree holes, brought out many nuts, and gathered together on the tree trunk, starting to peel the nuts.
