IMOGEN'S POV
My phone buzzed against my palm, the screen lighting up with that familiar blocked number. David. My heart hammered against my ribs as I pressed accept.
"What the fuck did you do?" His voice crackled through the speaker, sharp with rage.
Isaac leaned closer, trying to catch the conversation. I put the phone on speaker so he could hear.
"I don't know what you're talking about," I said, keeping my voice steady even though my hands were shaking.
"Don't play stupid with me." David's breathing was heavy, erratic. "One minute I'm getting paid to take your brat somewhere nice and quiet. Next minute, the old man's calling me off. What did you say to him?"
My mind raced. The old man. He had to mean Valentine. But I hadn't spoken to Valentine. I'd called Elijah.
"I didn't talk to anyone," I lied.
