"Then..." He reached up and stroked her hair, as if she were the one who needed comfort. "I will tell Wifey of a bad memory."

Merwyn's expression grew serious, and he looked down at his hands, as if they were the source of the memories.

"I was young. Very young. A fae child, and even for us, I was very small. I had never met a human before. Or any other creature besides a fae. But I was curious. I was always curious. Always wanted to know more. To see more."

His voice was soft, and he seemed to be speaking more to himself than to her.

She nodded. This aligned so far with the story he told in the past without admitting it was himself.

The innocent and foolish fae who met the innocent human and befriended her. Who did not understand death, and so when he came to visit the hiding girl and her pursuers had found and killed her, he did not understand she was not asleep until she faded into dust.

The one he laughed and mocked the young fae about.
